That was a terrific version! It caught the soul of the song. Also, how contented is that dog in the avatar of the post just north of mine? Awww.

That sounds better than the movie. I think I will read it. I was hearing good things about the book a long time back...I suspect that internal dialogue gives Katniss far more depth as a character. I think they did try with the movie, but....it's a movie, so the visuals are everything. The scenes that should have been horrifying in the movie were surprisingly bland. To me at least.

It's a great rumor. Good luck! Though I had zero success with that rumor a few years back about them playing a backyard BBQ at my place...

Is The Hunger Games well-written, a good read? I wasn't wowed by the movie, which I saw this weekend. Thought it was utterly predictable in most ways. The futuristic city was cool, and the acting was adequate, but...meh. So I've wondered if the book is better? I finished reading James Ellroy's "Blood's a Rover" yesterday. So intense! It's a very long book, over 600 pages, and took me a bit to get into, but the payoff for sticking with it was huge! I think my brain waves had begun converting over to thinking in the manner Ellroy writes...snapping moment-to-moment snapshots as the world swirls

What was/is your favorite decade for music?
kidsmoke replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
The 60's were incredible and I miss that energy. The 70's were about half and half for me...a lot of boring music and truly awful disco (there was some great disco too, but omigawd we had to listen to a lot that was purely horrible) but the 70's allowed a lot of freedom and gave rise to some amazing singer-songwriters. And then the late 70's just broke wide open with punk and stuff that was lumped in with punk (but wasn't at all) and pub bands. Late 70's was glorious! 80's....hmmm, I missed a lot of 80's music, busy with work and small children. I feel like I mostly missed the 80's. Feel free -
Oh yes...I remember "I'm the Man" and "I'm Always in Love" blasting happily You two?! You two are just pups! Now me, I'm approaching decrepit. Stop freaking out. You'll get there in time. Big clouds of wedding bubbles lifting off over riotously happy music and tables groaning with incredible dishes of food...too, too much food!...and a wedding cake handmade by an incredibly talented friend who spent days putting it together, handpainting sculpted flowers etc.....wow!....this wedding had layers and layers of love, not just between Tom and Sarah, but so obviously from all their friend

I'm really sorry to hear that, bittersweet_me, but so glad you had an effective alarm system! That sense of personal violation is soul shaking, very deep. I'm not surprised that you are left taking a hard look at all the angles of your life. Don't take your sense of insecurity and unease too seriously right now...give yourself time to swing back to an even keel. But listen to the valuable things your heart is telling you about what's truly important. Definitely, spend more time with your aging mother, with your brothers, take more time to care for yourself. You got a serious scare and your hea

Thank you, everyone, for the warm wishes and the craving for lobster with drawn butter (lammycat!). The wedding was gloriously glitch-free and beautiful, and although some rain was in the forecast, it never happened. We got a gorgeous spring day. We had so much fun. Lotti, thank you for putting your inimitable spin on the proceedings! If anyone understands true love, it would be Abba. For those of you now sporting headaches from trying to watch the backwards "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do" video, or from the fierce schnapps attack provoked by watching that, I give you the forwards version:

I will become a mother-in-law. How weird! Son Tom, now 25 and a grad student & neuroscience researcher, is marrying the love of his life, Sarah. (Also a grad student & researcher in Cell Biology) Feel free to (mentally) join in our party! to the almost Mr.& Mrs.!!! True love...there's nothing better!

I know you both feel passionately about your positions on this issue. Passion is fine, but please keep it civil or else go to pm's. Thanks.

That must've been thrilling for Nels! I second the request for any youtube links. Dan must've loved that, Leigh!

Oh yeah. But he just lets the song get out and stand there on its own merits. I love the late slanting sunlight and Jeff's expressive face...brings so much to an already amazing, poignant song.

Happy 20th to Uncle Tupelo's March 16-20, 1992
kidsmoke replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I've also just pulled it off the shelf, and set out to appreciate anew with the headphones I was given at Christmas. Happy 20th!! -
That's a really sad story. I wish him all the best.

It's still hard for me to believe that African-Americans didn't have voting rights when I was a child...I was 9 in 1965. Bravo to Phillips and so many others who risked everything to change that! Thanks for posting this. We shouldn't forget.

Yes, yes, yes! I hate that so much of CNN is now given over to pure video. I don't mind if there is a video in addition to a news story, but I hate having to watch a video to get the news story! Let me read the story, and then watch a video about it if I choose to, but not as the sole source of the story. Adding to my dislike of this trend is the fact that I can read, and get the important points of the story, far faster than the video can be loaded and viewed, in most cases. So it slows me down to have to watch a video.

I love that scene. Brilliant! It always makes me laugh. Well, he/she would! Hahaha. That reminds me of one I saw long ago...I've been tempted it remake it for my own car, but it would offend some: Jesus is coming! Everybody look busy!

While in L.A. about a week ago, my son Brennan & I came across a car bearing the pithy STILL PISSED AT YOKO I admit, I cracked up, even though I don't personally blame Yoko all that much. I'd share the photo we snapped but Brennan's damned dog (the adorably bouncy chihuahua-pomeranian, Buster) chewed up the camera's download cable, so... maybe later. Seen any good bumperstickers where you're at?

I want to thank you for bringing this book to my attention, smells like flowers! From the moment I picked it up until I finished it (too soon!) I was completely captivated by the people and events of the book. It was so very human, and yet like reading about humans on a strange new planet where unimaginable things can happen. What an incredible story it is. I recommend it to everybody. Author Timothy Egan is a gifted writer who makes it all seem so immediate that you can practically taste the dirt in your mouth (read it and you'll understand). A very hard book to put down! The fascination ha

kidsmoke replied to ckc's topic in Someone Else's Song
That's really nice! I look forward to hearing the rest. He is one multitalented brutha. Great stuff, Steve! Nice work on the webpage, Chandler! Very attractive. -
You were "sold" going in, DBoon. You had clearly decided before posting that this was a cause you felt for, a cause you could support. We got that. As gogo has pointed out, this is a discussion board. Let the discussion happen, and give our members the right to examine the evidence and decide for themselves what they believe. You posted to bring attention to a cause you believe in. You've done that. Now let people think for themselves. You've made up your mind on this organization. Let others look for themselves and decide for themselves.

Spencer has a new song, Rushmore--very Summerteeth-y
kidsmoke replied to Magnetized's topic in Just A Fan
That kid has some talent! It's a terrific tune. Hard to believe Spencer is just 16! -
That was interesting, Anthony, and brings up several of the worries that go with supporting a cause. I read the entire thing. At the close of the piece, author Grant Oyston has added, "EDIT: Please read Invisible Children’s excellent response here." Invisible children's response is also worth reading. It's a complex situation. If ultimately Kony can be stopped, it'll be worth the efforts being made.
