Thank you Maudie. Excellent call. -
??? I removed my posts, too, because they no made sense now. Bea, what I meant by saying " Things of this nature can be discussed civilly" is that, even if the poster has the belief that in Spain, blacks are discriminated against, there are ways (and appropriate places and times) to discuss his or her dislike of racism without insulting an entire country and its people! If I felt that there was, for instance, a lot of racism in the deep south of the United States, and I wanted to discuss how that bothered me, I wouldn't do so in a thread about the Superbowl just because some southern team

Moderators and members, I've gone ahead and removed the comments about racism, which don't belong in a soccer thread and are purely inflammatory and offensive. Things of this nature can be discussed civilly, believe it or not, so long as people are willing to discuss their viewpoints while being open to how it looks to others. It does require an open mind and empathy, but we as a human race need to constantly attempt to move ourselves forward, right? This is all great practice in that attempt. But again, it is simply unwarranted provocation in a thread such as this, and so has been removed.

I'm old enough to remember Vietnam (too well). Yeah, a draft changes everything and makes a war so much more of a personal affront. -
Oh hell yeah! Congratulations! He sounds like a catch.

I loved this! Heartbreaking though. Don't neglect reading all the end notes, as they add so much to the story (but don't read them in advance.) Her writing is brilliant. I've just finished a wonderful, wonderful book: It's beautiful and the characters are believable. Their story comes to life in Sach's capable hands, and the plot is compelling enough that it's a hard book to put down. She reaches between two cultures, American and Vietnamese, as two women's lives intertwine. This story is going to stay with me! Highly recommended.

Bye, Goose. You look like you were a cool doggie, and you did what good doggies do best....made people love you. Rest in peace.

Hey!!! Cake and hugs to a wonderful VC'er! I hope you like orange. This looked refreshing in this hot weather. Hope your day and your year are as terrific as you are!

But, please?

Excellent suggestions, Jay! And may I say, there's room here in this thread for both the serious and the silly.
-
Well obviously.

Come on, you know you have some! Out with it! Parents are struggling in China, and you aren't offering up your tips? That's just selfish! Thank you.

Yeah, and bring them the other bag! Lammy, alternatively you could make the kids go outside to eat. That works too. Then you just, ah, mow up whatever scraps they leave all over the yard. We'll call that, Parenting Tip #41. (For parenting tips 1 through 40, please send a SASE and $5.95 to me.)

Crap. I want in! Just now noticed this thread! Where has my brain been lately? Wanna match me with Three Dollars? -
Darlings, as flattered as I'm sure Tim Russert would be by all your musings on your own obituaries, I must ask that you either return to this thread's topic (that would be paying respects to Tim Russert's memory) or at least create your own thread specifically to muse about your own obituaries. This thread has gotten a bit disrespectful, though I admit to having giggled over it. But let's keep a serious thread on topic, ok? I'm thinking that I'm sure going to miss Russert's perspective when election day hits. I'm not sure who among the rest of the field can bring his energy and excitemen

Yes, we'll all be damned.
