  1. That's pretty funny & also pretty great!
  2. That's on my to-read list. I've heard such great things about it!
  3. I have just begun watching this, and can't thank you enough for turning me on to it. Such a wonderful show! In a single episode I'm going from tears to belly laughs and back again. Addictive. I'm currently reading Collum McCann's "Let the Great World Spin" which opens with this even, as seen by the ordinary New Yorkers who looked up that day, not knowing whether they were looking at a would-be suicide up there on the ledge...I had forgotten all about this fabulous act of derring-do! The book mentions him bending over, just before stepping out, and then a dark object falling and twisting i
  4. Saw Hugh Laurie & his band tonight at Riverside's beautifully restored Fox Theatre (Where "Gone With the Wind" was first shown!). Omigawd, I am so utterly smitten. What an adorable, engaging, consummate performer is Laurie, and what a crack band he has assembled in The Copper Bottom Band! My cheeks hurt from smiling so much, and my head is full of songs. Ran the gamut from raucous to poignant, with never a dull moment in an almost 3 hour show! A highlight for me was the positively brilliant "St. James Infirmary". The evening closed with the Alan Price tune "Changes" and it was flat-out lov
  5. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope the love and good memories can sustain you. I think it's beautiful that your love is motivating you to give back.
  6. Your school assemblies must've been loooooong! But hip.
  7. Now these songs are all stuck in your heads, aren't they? I'm sorry. I'm especially sorry to NoJ. My daughter's school mascot is also the husky. But they aren't allowed to use your colorful adjective.
  8. I suppose it's because my daughter is graduating in a couple of weeks, but for whatever reason I woke up a few mornings ago with my Alma mater humming in my head. I can't remember all of it though, just the part that goes: "Our hearts delight to be with you praise and honor to your name throughout this mighty country we'll hide in shame..." Of course that's not how the words actually go....the last line there should be "we'll spread your fame", but nobody I knew actually sang it that way. Even teachers were known to slip into the "mistaken" lyrics. At assemblies with everyone singing, it w
  9. Very nice! I'll bet it's beautiful there.
  10. Night is pretty powerful stuff. My daughter read that too. The Lampshade was very, very good, and very well told. You'll like it, despite the horrifying subject matter.
  11. I love that picture! Two of my favorite people. Wishing a phenomenal turnout to this Light The Night walk, and fundraising results as generous as Sue & Jeff have always been themselves! Love you, Sue!
  12. No crime spree that I'm aware of. The officer we spoke with said it was possible the car had been ditched in the alley with the thieves intending to return for it later. My favorite thing: the first thing the officer had us do was look the car over to confirm that everything in the cab & trunk was ours. They were hoping for anything the thieves had left behind that might provide a lead. It was a bit of a mess because the thieves had dumped out everything in the glove box and rifled through everything in the car & tossed it around....cd's, paperwork, etc. But everything was familiar.
  13. Yeah, of course it isn't. What a great bunch of solo dates!
  14. Proving once more how strong VC vibeage is, CAR IS HOME!!!!! Found ditched in an alley only 5 minutes from home, safe and sound and completely intact except for the ignition having been ripped out. We feel unbelievably lucky and grateful. What a relief...I truly thought we'd seen the last of it! Thank you to everyone who wished good wishes. They came true.
  15. Haha! The Wilco connection. "Walken" is such an odd choice for a commercial about driving.
  16. Geez, Louie! I hope that 5th theft proves to be your last! And all of you out there in internetland, try saying "fifth theft" 3 times fast. Right out loud, go ahead....now, is your spouse asking how much you've had to drink today? We picked up a rental car today, a sweet little Jetta. So nice to have transportation again! Still nada on our car.
  17. I love zots, and I especially love handing them out to unsuspecting people who have never had them. Always fun to watch their faces. Sorry you didn't get the dream job, Leigh, but nice that you got a raise! Blue zots might be good for that throat.
  18. That would be funnier if I didn't think it was pretty damned accurate. My husband noticed a scrap-metal type truck the day before yesterday (day of the theft) that drove very slooowly down our street, then u-turned just past our house, and drove back down. He thought it seemed like a suspicious thing at the time, and remembered it after the car went missing that night. Tried to mention it in his report to the police, and they totally brushed it off as "not relevant". Sigh. No news. Sorry about your coffee maker, Carrie! Where does this madness end???!
  19. Update: no news on our car, but we've learned that our neighbor's car was also broken into last night, and ransacked for anything valuable. At least he got to keep his car. Ours was a year newer with a fresh paint job, so maybe that's why they took ours. Our insurance company (Liberty Mutual) has always treated us very well, so at least there's that. Diane, good advice. Hixter, may the force be with you as you job-search! And remember, 51 is the new 31. You are just a babe yet.
  20. Oh, crap, Hixter! Did they lower the boom on your actual birthday? Either way, that is even suckier than having a car stolen! I think perhaps better things are in store for us both. Maybe a newer car is coming our way, and a fresh job for you where you are more appreciated. Can I get an Amen? Or several? Thanks everyone for the support and vibeage. Some of your stories have chilled me as well as made me laugh out loud - and made me realize it could be worse! Baby steps, baby steps. This too shall pass.
  21. Thanks, Lammy. I'm trying to see it that way. Not feeling it just yet.
  22. So our dark green Honda Accord was parked in the driveway last night, fully alarmed as usual. This morning the driveway was empty when my husband went out to get the newspaper & feed the cats. What a sickening feeling to have it just be....gone. Any & all vibes, prayers, or what-have-you much appreciated. This day is not off to a great start.
  23. Too bad the turnout wasn't better for Ken, but I do love a tiny, intimate show, and he'd be one who'd be magnificent in such a setting. Your lucky friend! Maybe a recording of the YAI will emerge. Sorry you missed it, but sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do...I know how that goes. Davey's setlist will be a sweet little consolation prize.
