This set of midterms matters like few others, and I'm trying to apply my scant funds where they will matter. I just donated a small amount to Val Demings because Marco Rubio is a little useless dweeb who needs to be gone. Who are you supporting? It's hard to know who to fund right now. I know it's the same for us all. Confusing as hell. I hope we have a reassuring November 8th (although I don't think we'll know results fully before about November 14th...) Anyway, I'm just curious to know where VC members are throwing their weight.

Justin Sullivan of Night Shop last night. He never disappoints. A fast, fun, fabulous evening. He just gets better! SO good. A crack backing band, too. A tiny club (Gold Diggers, L.A.) full of people who were totally digging it. Pardon the pathetic photo; for some reason the club saw no need for front lighting on the acts!

Allison is a sweetheart & so talented! She's an L.A. local so I see her frequently playing in L.A. bands. Did you know she & Katie are "mirror twins", where their bodies are mirrors of each other, reversed compared to each other? I understand body organs can even be on the "wrong side" of a mirror twin's body. It's pretty rare. Google it!

I'm a big fan of the talented Katie Crutchfield, who performs as Waxahatchee. What a powerful voice, both literally and figuratively. The songs she writes are resonant gems, the lyrics linger. Anyway, as much as I enjoy Katie's voice, I'm also a big fan of L.A.'s own Jess Williamson, a voice as mesmerizing as Katie's own, but very different. When Katie and Jess met and joined forces, I perked up my ears. Today I got my just-released copy of Katie & Jess's new album as Plains, called "I Walked with You a Ways". I'm still getting to know this music but already there are standout songs.

So nice to see you Tweedling! How's life? Many brilliant people have been unappreciated, or hugely underappreciated, in their own lifetimes. Jay was always loved and admired, but maybe it takes time and perspective to fully appreciate all he brought to his times. That, and a beautiful movie that captured the spirit of the man. I wish he could have lived so we all could have heard the next music in his head.

Got to see Kevin Morby's magnificent show tonight (well, last night now) in L.A. at the Belasco. It was one for the ages! Started off with the new album and then got songs off every one of his solo albums, just the greatest setlist. I'll try to get the list. Kevin looked great in his fringed gold jacket and gold glitter flecks scattered across his cheekbones...with the way he leaps around, the jacket fringe was flying and the glitter lit under the stagelights like sparks. In my many years at Via, I have yet to manage to post in time for a "Live! Tonight!" Clearly, I am too slow for this process. But anyway I got to see Kevin Morby (ssf alumnus) perform in the tiny 200-seat Clive Davis Theatre at the Grammy Museum night before last, and it was one of those transcendent evenings where every detail was perfect. it began with a Q and A between Kevin and Tim Heidecker that was as endearing and funny and deeply introspective as any fan could hope for, followed by an intense, passionate set in the tiny, close theatre that left my brain melted for hours. Wow. The next few days are going to be full of sad and sobering stories.

Hurricane Ian is getting quite the build-up. It sounds as if it could be massive in terms of wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall. If some of you are there, I hope you can either evacuate or batten down the hatches, hard. MSahno? You be safe!
