  1. Great thread. I'll second some of the suggestions for 16 Horsepower, Seven Swans by Sufjan Stevens, King's X, Patty Griffin and Bruce Cockburn. I spent most of high school entrenched in "christian rock" then tried to forget about it for a decade. Some of the other names mentioned were staples for me; Stryper, Rich Mullens, 77s, Daniel Amos, Phil Keaggy. Haven't listened to any of them in a long time. Now I'm rediscovering some good bands. I love that Danial Lanois song mention, The Maker. Here's another great one he did with Bono and U2 (Also still my favorite christian rock band.)
  2. Is this a cover or an unreleased original track?
  3. Thanks again guys! I'll look up those clubs.
  4. Thanks! It's all starting to look familiar to me now. Anywhere special for live music? Maybe I'll get lucky and Buffalo tom will be playing in town in support of their new album. Is the Samuel Adams brewery tour worthwhile? How about other local beers? John Harvard's Brew House, Cambridge Brewing Company or Beer Works? Any good? Does Harpoon have a tap room or give tours? Is Cheers Beacon Hill/Bull and Finch a decent place or an overpriced tourist trap?
  5. I was a stone broke graduate student in 1998! I didn't go many places. We stayed by the convention center (that's where I'm staying again). I remember wandering Boston Common and Back Bay, we made it to Old North Church, Granary Cemetery, City Hall Farmer's Market area, the Museum of Science, and whatever cheep beer joints we found along the way. And a quick trip to Cambridge to see Harvard Yard. Didn't stay long. A couple of the guys I'll be with will probably want to go to Fenway. We'll probably make it out that way.
  6. Going to Boston in the spring. Have been since 1998. Any recommendations for bars, clubs, site seeing, etc? How's public transit in Boston?
  7. Ditto to all comments. My guess however that dealing with 2 record labels may make a career retrospective B-side collection difficult.
  8. Thank you! Although I still haven't moved completely to digital music files. I still like physical CDs. I keep listening to the stream and every time I hear "Don't Carry It All" I can't help but thinking of Golden Smog's "Fear of Falling". It's uncanny.
  9. Never listened to The Decemberists until the stream of this new album. I love everything I hear. Help me out, what are the "essential tracks" from their previous albums?
  10. My brother bought me some for Christmas. Pretty good, but I wouldn't call myself a coffee aficionado. I usually drink Folgers Half-Caf!
  11. I'm gonna try to snag a copy. All the colleges kids will be out of town that day so hopefully the local shop won't be so busy. Wonder how much it's going to cost?
  12. thanks for the tip. I've actually already thought of this. I have a cousin and an old fraternity brother that work for members of congress. They've both offered to do what they can.
  13. Just some information if anyone else is looking for similar information. There was a huge in 1973 at the National Personnel Records Center in Missouri. It destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files. 80% of the files for Army personnel discharged between 1912 and 1960 were lost. My Dad was discharged in 1956. I've put a request in, but they may not be able to send me any more than I already have.
  14. Thanks. And thanks for the tips. I had a friend suggest that website too. I have his discharge papers, photos and even a yearbook from a base he was assigned to. I'd like to find copies of his unit insignia and medals to buy for my Mom and brother. The real ones have long since been lost.
  15. My Dad died last week. He was a veteran of the US Army in the early 1950s, right after Korea. I'm trying to piece together his military record. Units he was assigned to, medals he may have won, insignia that may have been on his uniform. Anyone know of good web resources?
  16. I can really relate to what u2roolz and ponch1028 wrote about. My neighbor the junior high PE teacher does P90X. he gets paid to be in shape. Me, I jog. I started exercising a little more than a year and a half ago. I'd never been one to do a lot of physical activity. Never more than hiking or bike riding. My motivation came from a check-up where I learned I had crazy high triglyceride levels and my glucose levels indicated "pre-diabetic." This was a freak'n wake-up call. Doc. got me on a cholesterol drug, but told me that what I really needed to do was exercise more. Never really t
  17. Clip of U2 performing "Boy Falls from the Sky" from "Spider-Man: Turn off the dark" in Coimbra, Portugal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwBJ7zLebFw Not bad. Still would like to see/hear it in context with the story.
  18. Thought I'd resurrect this tread. Anybody go to any Div. III games yet this year? I'm headed to the DePauw (4-0) vs. Rhodes (2-2) game on Saturday. DPU is joining the North Coast Athletic Conference next season. Some great old schools in that conference: Allegheny , Denison, Earlham, Hiram, Kenyon, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, Wabash, Wittenberg, and The College of Wooster
  19. Thanks for the tip on the Old Granddad. I'll have to try that. Finally found some Sazerac here in town. May have to pick some up soon. Just remembered seeing (ri)1 in Indy a couple of months ago. A little pricey at about $50 though. And how many of them were drinking coronas? A watered down, pale imitation of a beer. Although I'm going to stop ordering anything more exotic than a gin and tonic when I'm out. Had a horribly watered down Manhattan, on the rocks, with no bitters at a catered event on Thursday. Cocktails, done well, are as American as baseball, apple pie and
  20. I just recently started drinking bourbon cocktails. Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Sazeracs and Whiskey Sours. I'm going to pick up a bottle of rye whiskey this weekend. The only brands that are stocked locally are Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Old Overholt and Jim Beam Rye. Anyone have a preference between those three? I've heard great things about Rittenhouse Rye and Sazerac Rye, but I can't find them here.
  21. My sympathies for you and your family. Here's a thread I started with some songs and poems about life, death, love and loss.
  22. Really looking forward to the Achtung Baby remaster. It's an album that's both timeless and ties to a specific time in my life. Some great b-sides that could be on there too like "Lady With the Spinning Head," "Salomé" and "Where Did It All Go Wrong". And there's all of the Berlin demos that were stolen/leaked. And the groundbreaking ZooTV tour. I'd love to hear more of Bono and the Edge's score from the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "A Clockwork Orange." They've only ever released "Alex Descends into Hell for a Bottle of Milk / Korova 1." I bet the rest is just as good. http:/
  23. I'm curious which tracks Jeff and Pat played on. Is that broken down in the liner notes?
  24. I agree. I wonder how the crowd is reacting in that huge arena environment.
  25. I agree. There's potential in it. I'd like to see it in context of the story. Mercy has finally made its live debut! Maybe it'll be on the next album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS6tiSVILXQ
