  1. I never thought I'd long for the original "Lady Humps".
  2. I bet he made a ton of money off Honky Tonk Heroes, though. He still tours regularly, so I assume he's at least breaking even. He lost his son, mother and wife all in the span of about two years in the early aughts, though. And he had a heart attack on stage I think. He's a survivor.
  3. Yeah, there are plenty of places. Like bars, for instance. Not all of us are gun nuts, either.
  4. This is sort of a bummer. But then again, this is the stuff country legends are made of... Warrants issued for Billy Joe Shaver Attorney: warrant out for country singer AUSTIN (AP) -- Police have issued arrest warrants for country singer Billy Joe Shaver after he shot and wounded a man outside a Texas bar, the entertainer's attorney said. After Shaver left a bar in Lorena on Saturday night, a drunk, aggressive stranger with a knife followed him into the parking lot, said attorney Joseph A. Turner of Austin. Shaver shot him in self-defense, he said. Police in Lorena - about 80 miles n

  7. I own Growin' A Beard. I even got critiqued by the beard guy when I was in ad school. He was kind of a dick but it's a cool doc with a great soundtrack. Make sure to watch the special features--the thing about the 72 oz steak in Amarillo is great. Just sent back: The Last Detail--really, really great flick with Jack Nicholson and a very young Randy Quaid At Home: Stranger Than Fiction--this was awesome. Miller's Crossing Harlan County, USA--I've had this for months. I'm just never in the mood. In Queue: Brick The Apostle King of Bluegrass Murder on a Sunday Morning The Fog of War One Br
  8. Amen. I also second Townes, David Berman, Joanna Newsom and Joe Pernice. I'd like to add Sam Beam: "Please, remember me Happily By the rosebush laughing With bruises on my chin The time when We counted every black car passing Your house beneath the hill And up until Someone caught us in the kitchen With maps, a mountain range, A piggy bank A vision too removed to mention But Please, remember me Fondly I heard from someone you're still pretty And then They went on to say That the pearly gates Had some eloquent graffiti Like 'We'll meet again' And 'Fuck the man' And 'Tell my mother not to
  9. The ones Joe Pernice and Colin Meloy wrote (for The Smiths' Meat Is Murder and the 'Mats Let It Be, respectively) were both good. I just purchased the ones for Music from Big Pink, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and 69 Love Songs last week. It's a cool series as far as music writing goes.
  10. I saw The King of Kong (a documentary about two men battling for the Donkey Kong world record) and The Go-Getter (a new Zooey Deschanel movie with a soundtrack by M. Ward) this weekend at the AFI Dallas festival. King of Kong will be huge. If you like American Movie and similar zany documentaries, you will love it. And The Go-Getter made me fall in love with Zooey Deschanel all over again. Over the credits she even sings a Richard and Linda Thompson cover with M. Ward ("When I Get to the Border," with Nels on guitar). If either of these movies make it to your neck of the woods, I highly recomm
  11. Yeah, I'm talking about Simple X. Sorry, I just don't get Dosh. I'm not so into beeps and bloops.
  12. I'll second these and add: Rock Plaza Central--Are We Not Horses Willie Nelson--Red Headed Stranger Willie Nelson--Phases and Stages Willie Nelson--Yesterday's Wine The Magnetic Fields--69 Love Songs Love is a "concept", right? The South San Gabriel album about Will Johnson's cat Sufjan Stevens--Michigan and Illinois

Here's the write-up I did for my paper if anyone's interested. There's a couple of the pics I took there, too. I'll post some more once i get them up on flickr.
  14. It's good but I think the production was a lot better on Eggs. I think his voice is buried too much in the mix on this one. And the one song with the default adult contemporary drum machine beat reminds me of that "Standing Outside a Phonebooth" song by the Primitive Radio Gods
  15. I've got an Epiphone Casino. Piece of shit never stays in tune.
  16. What's wrong with Under Blackpool Lights? I thought it was really cool. I dug the lo-fi camera work for sure.

It means exactly that. If a venue is 21 + and you're a minor you can't get in with a wristband. I had to deal with that for a couple years and it was a major drag. You can get into most of the bigger venues as a minor though, just not the places that are normally bars and not music venues.

Do the day party thing and you'll be fine. Don't expect to get into anything big unless you get there early and stand in line. You can see a ton of shit without a wristband, though. The first year I went I didn't have one and I saw 25 bands in 2 days.
  23. Picking one is impossible. Here's a few- Wilco/Billy Bragg--Mermaid Avenue Neutral Milk Hotel--In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Songs:Ohia--Magnolia Electric Company Richard and Linda Thompson--I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight The Constantines--Shine A Light Damien Jurado--Where Shall You Take Me The Mendoza Line--Lost in Revelry Neil Young--Harvest Okkervil River--Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See A lot of stuff hit me really hard in 02/03 it seems.
