  1. I will. And it's Living With War. Way better than anything he's done since Ragged Glory. I'd say it's his best since rust never sleeps, but that's just me.
  2. I sure wish he'd work with someone else besides Brendan fucking O' Brien. Yawn. And Magic has to be the lamest album title of his career. I'm sure at least some of it will be decent though.
  3. I liked DIG, but the Brian Jonestown Massacre is sort of a joke. He doesn't even rip off the Stones' best period. He has some good songs, sure, but he also has a ton of crap.
  4. I saw Wayne Coyne and his wife the last time I went to IKEA. He wore bright white pants and a green shirt, along with big white willy wonka sunglasses. She wore a matching green dress. Noone else seemed to notice them, despite the fact they looked like something you might buy there. I saw the kid from Almost Famous at a film festival this spring. No big whoop. Then, of course, there's this-- and this--
  5. Sometimes I'll buy said album, if it's really good and they offer bonus tracks or something. If not I might just go to the band's show and buy some merch, which in my mind is better than buying the album from a store anyway.
  6. It's not so much that he sounds exactly like Edie Brickell; I just think his lyrics fall closer to coffehouse poetry/open mike shit than druggy stream of consciousness-type stuff. It's a very, very fine line, I admit. He put out some stuff in the early 90s that I would call embarassing, though. Like this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:jxfqxq90ld0e
  7. David Garza is not the inventor of freak-folk. He has a couple of decent songs, but on the whole I would say his jams fall much closer to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians than say, Vetiver. Sorry.
  8. I somewhat agree with this, but it's not like he's Ryan Adams inconsistent or anything. I thought Cripple Crow was front to back fantastic minus maybe 4 or 5 tunes. I listen to it more than any other album put out that year.
  9. I interviewed Ben once not long after the album came out, and he was nice as can be. He even read the article I wrote and talked to me about it at the show. Definitely not an asshole. A smartass, maybe, but not an asshole. And as someone guilty of taping shows for youtube, I can still see his point. It's out of hand these days.
  10. I really, really wanted to go to this, but I was feeling under the weather. I've seen Vandervelde once--I'd say he's more of a poor man's Marc Bolan than a poor man's Ryan Adams, but to each his own... Was Blitzen Trapper selling any of their earlier releases?
  11. Badly Drawn Boy There should be a seperate category for bands that were confronted with the obstacle of death. Chris Bell (died in a car wreck) The aforementioned Exploding Hearts (died in a car wreck)
  12. I'm 26. Started listening to Wilco at 14 or 15.
  13. I liked it, dude. Skynyrd wasn't half bad back then.
  14. Gonna wrap some roses, ah ah ah, snug in a tortilla, ah ah yeah
  15. I heard "Casey Jones" for the first time ever on the radio last week. I never really listened to classic rock radio as a kid, but now that Dallas' classic rock station is playing Uncle Tupelo and Slobberbone, I've come around to it a little. I also heard "That Smell" for the first time last week. A total epiphany.
  16. It's streaming on the Gourds' artist page on Yep Roc's site, if anyone's interested. "Steeple Full of Swallows" has waited a long, long time to make it on a Gourds album. Beautiful song.
  17. I can't wait to hear this. The Gourds are maybe the most underrated band to ever come out of Texas. They're our version of the Band.
  18. The Theater Fire--gypsy jazz country from Fort Worth, TX. Pleasant Grove--maybe the best band ever out of Dallas. Should be on Merge or Sub Pop by now. Dove Hunter--best new band in North Texas. Fits very much into the Wilco-MMJ-Califone thinking man's jam band aesthetic.
  19. Agreed. I'm halfway in, and I think the spot I saved for Okkervil on my top ten just became available again.
  20. Will Sheff has not been in Shearwater in some time. They are awesome live; I've heard they've gotten even better since i last saw them a year or so ago.
  21. Can someone hook a bearded brother up with a PM?
  22. I want to get into Tinariwen. Their bio makes them sound so cool.
  23. Well, not really, but the newest issue does feature the cover image in an article about animal behavior (if I remember correctly).
