  1. Starting pitching is, without a doubt, huge in the playoffs, but it's not the be-all and end-all, and the Mets do have a good offense. Also, the other NL playoff teams aren't much better when it comes to pitching. The Pads have Peavy, who is having by far his worst year thus far in his short career, and no one else. The Cardinals pitching is absolutely horrible. Still not sure who's going to win the wild card, but neither the Dodgers or Phillies are exactly dominant when it comes to the starting pitching. Edit: I just looked at the stats. The Padres have much better pitching than I'd t
  2. The Mets should still cruise through the playoffs though. No other team in the National League comes close. Anything can happen, but they've got to be a huge favorite to come out of the N.L. That being said, I think all 4 of the A.L. playoff teams are probably as good or better than the Mets, so once they're in the World Series, who knows.
  3. Yes, Major League Baseball is actually calling it Octoberquest.
  4. Brian Setzer does a nice version of "Sleepwalk", but it sure isn't his song.

  6. Yorke writes most, but not all of Radiohead's lyrics. As for Costello, Waits, etc...I'd say it should be judged by the material they put out post-1980. If you were to consider EC's whole career, for example, there's no doubt he's near the top of the list. But since the question here is post-1980...well, that's a lot more debateable. He's done a lot of good stuff since 1980, but he did most of his best stuff before that.
  7. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if she felt as though he would have wanted it aired. But it also doesn't surprise me a bit that she doesn't want it aired. Whatever.
  8. I heard that he was healed by Evander Holyfield.
  9. Bah. Papelbon was disappointing in the second half. Time to pass the torch to Verlander, IMO.

  11. Yeah, I gotta figure out a way to weasel out of going home for Thanksgiving. Sheeit.
  12. Me too. Nirvana was a great band, but the White Stripes have had a much, much larger impact on me personally (in lots of ways--I'd put them in my top 10 favorites of all time, but as far as overall impact on my life, the White Stripes are #1 hands down). And of course, there's a certain excitement to being into an active band that you can't quite get from going back and listening to a band that is no longer around, as far as wonderment of what they're going to do next, etc.
  13. For most guys (i.e., anyone who plays for anyone other than the Yankees, or has been on the Yankees for less than a few years), playoff records all suffer from being a small sample size. I'm not saying you can't read anything into them, I'm just weary of reading too much. I agree that postseason play is certainly not the same as regular season, but I'm not sure that you can really judge how good a player is on the post season based on just one or two series.
  14. Well, if the Yanks start off against Minnesota...well, they'll face Johan twice. In a 5 game series. If the Twins win both those (which, of course, is not guaranteed, but Johan is as close to a guarantee as there is out there today), then they'd only have to steal one more.
  15. The Yankees have looked pretty unstoppable several times in the last few years. I'm not saying that they won't win, I'm just saying that it's a long way from being a foregone conclusion. Their line up is stellar without question, but they do have the worst pitching of any of the A.L. playoff teams. Plus, well, in a short series anything can happen.

  17. Willie Randolph is going to manage the Cubs? Just kidding.
  18. I'm guessing that you two are talking about two different things. No doubt that force can change someone's mind about what course of action to take (i.e. surrendering instead of continuing to fight). But I think that Edie probably meant that it won't change their opinions of us, or make them stop wanting to attack us. Correct me if I'm wrong...
  19. So she's really thinks that these people decided they didn't like us and then looked for a reason? That's just stupid. Now, I'm not saying that their reasons for hating us justify their horrible actions -- of course they don't -- but it's just insane to suggest that they hate us for no reason, and will find any reason that they can to continue feeling that way. I'm not even suggesting that they have good reasons for disliking us (I'm not saying they don't either -- just not commenting on the validity of their complaints at all right now). But to suggest that they decided to hate us for no
