Try learning some cover tunes in a variety of styles. Even if it doesn't break you out of your rut, at least you'll be playing music. Chances are you'll pick up some ideas from these songs that you can use in your own songs.

Aerosmith is one of the only bands from the early '70s that still has the same lineup as their debut album. That's almost unprecedented.

Rocks Get Your Wings the self titled debut album Toys All great stuff. The intro to Back in the Saddle is one of the best things ever in rock music.

I feel guilty that that one crossed my mind. I refrained from posting it since I have a soft spot for Ed. Plus, he really did some amazing playing and singing with them, particularly on Flyin' the Flannel, Ragin' and the Totem Pole ep. It's George Hurley, btw. (nevermind, i see that was corrected above)

Captain Beefheart is arguably the weakest link in Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band.

He's not a bad drummer, but I feel their music took a noticable dip in quality after Bruford quit (although Rick Wakeman's departure is partially to blame, as well). Alan White seems like an odd choice considering the likes of Mitch Mitchell and Michael Giles were probably available at the time.

I saw that tour, I think. Don Preston and Bunk Gardner opened the show. At that show the Project/Object set was taken almost entirely from the early/mid '70s material and the Ike Willis era. I only saw their first set, though, now that I think of it. Maybe they did the '60s material in the second set. I wish I could have stayed for the whole show. With Don and Bunk on board they surely must've done a lot of '60s tunes.
