He's Gone from the 5/26/72 Lyceum show is fantastic! Nothing can beat the official Europe '72 version (from Amsterdam) but this version comes mighty close. This has always been one of my favorite songs but most of the live versions leave a little to be desired. Hope these Lyceum shows stream on dead.net just a little longer...

I am listening to the 5/24/72 show now and it sounded like the band were about to play Weather Report Suite after finishing Deal. Did anyone else notice this or am I crazy?

Thanks for the recommendations, worldrecordplayer! Will be sure to check out these shows. Just watched Downhill From Here last night and really liked the Cumberland Blues with Brent. The guy did add a different element to the band which is evident in this rendition. And seeing Jerry's smile during the opening notes of China Cat Sunflower totally made me break out the cheesy grin. Would love to see all three shows released on DVD at some point. And on another note, just downloaded the 9/20/70 Fillmore East show. I think this is the best acoustic/electric show I've yet to hear.

I agree on the Donna wasn't that bad sentiment. A Playing in the Band is not complete without her yells. Never cared much for what she did in Scarlet Begonias though. You guys are spot on about Brent. His energy and enthusiasm really helped carry the band. I have yet to listen to any post-July '90 shows as a result. Just can't imagine the band around this time without him.

J.P. Morgan Chase Suffers Major Trading Losses

This news saddens me. I feel terrible when bad things happen to good people. Anyone else considering sending them a small donation to help comfort them in their time of need? I'm sure the government will be more than willing to direct some of our tax money to them as well. -
Thanks for that link, Analogman. Reading about the "firing" in such great detail was nice. Kind of makes you wonder where the band would have ended up had Pigpen and Weir never rejoined. It is especially ironic how short-lived the band's psychedilc experimentation was. By 1970, they had returned to a more bluesy, folksy sound. In other GD news, Dave's Picks vol. 2 just shipped out. I skipped out on Vol. 1 (never a huge fan of the Mosque show) but couldn't pass up a Wall of Sound gig. I think this may be the best China>Rider I have yet to hear. The Weather Report Suites from this era are e

Did anyone get around to buying the All The Years Combine DVD set? I'm assuming most die-hard fans own the individual releases and do not need it, but for GD video newbs like myself, it's a great buy. It seems as though every DVD the band has released is now out of print and are going for at least $20 each in used condition. $99 for 14 DVDs is a steal.

I took my friend to see the movie and we had a great time. I was a little worried about how much she would like it being that she's only familiar with American Beauty and Workingman's Dead but she seemed to really get into it. The highlight of the evening was the Sugar Magnolia> Scarlet Begonias. After Sunshine Daydream, the theater lights came on and the credits started rolling. Everyone remained seated as the guy behind us shouted, "Where's Quinn?!"

I broke down a couple of weeks ago and bought a smart phone. Has anyone noticed that through SoundHound, you can hold your phone up to almost any live GD show and it'll tell you what show it is? So far, it has only been wrong once out of the 5 or so times I've tried it. It mistaked Philly '89's 'Ramble on Rose' for Europe '72. Don't know how practical this is but it is neat regardless. Btw, that video above is genius!

Album reviews never really bother me, but their lack of love for AGIB is just insane. That record is just as good, if not better, than YHF.

Leonard Cohen's new album, Old Ideas, has been streaming on various sites for over a week now. Has anyone on here had the chance to check it out? Without a doubt, it is much, much stronger than his last album, Dear Heather, and just as strong as Ten New Songs (I love that album despite the synths. It's a grower.)

Any of you guys check out Joseph's new release, Redemption City? It can be downloaded for free over at: http://www.josepharthur.com. I've always been a fan of his poetry and it's nice to hear it set to music (all of which he recorded himself, btw.)

I think I am one of them nutty fans who will always appreciate what he puts out. With that being said, I seriously love everything he's released commercially except Orion. Just can't get into sci-fi metal. If he were to do something more Danzig-y, that would be alright. That video made my night. The boy band pizza that breaks out in song is the funniest thing I've seen in a while!

Tom Petty is one of my top 5 favorite musicians of all time. Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, Highway Companion and Into the Great Wide Open are my fav albums. The guy's got a pretty big catalog that I need to spend some time with.

Strange Powers (Magnetic Fields doc) -- anybody see this?
HungryHippo replied to PopTodd's topic in Someone Else's Song
I def. need to check this out! I had the honor of hanging out with Stephin a few years ago one evening. It baffled me because all of his friends referred to him as if he were a regular guy (which he is but you know how it goes with the whole fan/idol thing.) I was not too impressed with the last 2 MF albums but everything else he has touched is solid gold. Future Bible Heroes, the 6ths, etc. -
$10 is a great deal. I was about to pay $22 for it at Barnes and Noble but it rang up at $15.99.

After listening to the new album a solid 4 times over, it's reminding me a lot of the slower tunes from Cold Roses. I really like it. This album has got to be Ryan's most cohesive work, ever. I am not putting any of his previous records down. This one just flows so well.

It was a bittersweet day for me. While Wilco did release a new album today, they played in my hometown this evening and I missed it due to work. At least I was able to squeeze in a lunch long enough to hit up the downtown record store and grab a copy of the vinyl. Seeing other people there buying the album made me smile, especially the fellow who pre-ordered it! Thanks for the amazing album, guys!
-
Oh, no! Tickets are no longer being sold for the show! I wasn't planning on going, but I think I'll be able to leave work and get there by 7. If anyone is selling an extra ticket, I will be more than glad to buy it!

Good music is always being made somewhere. If you think about it, it's really easy to bum yourself out over how much good music there is that we'll never here. There are sooo many struggling musicians out there that many of us will never grow familiar with. But I do think the internet has changed a lot of opinions of what a good album is. Everything is flaunted in the public eye without shame. Back in the day you'd have to wait like 4 years for your favorite musician to release a new album. Now we wait 2 years max and ride that wait out with live releases, outtakes from various albums, YouTube

YHF is one of only 2 albums I can distinctively remember listening to for the first time. My mom brought home an issue of Rolling Stone and I remember reading this article about the album and liked how it described IATTBYH. Needless to say, I downloaded* the album 30 seconds later and still remember those opening notes making their way out of my cheap Dell speakers Man, that was almost 10 years ago. Crazy how time flies when you're a Wilco fan! *- Despite downloading YHF, I have purchased every other album at least twice to make up for this.
-
This album is definitely on par with YHF and AGIB. I remember Jeff talking about SBS before it was released and I imagined it sounding exactly like this. I've listened to the album once and can tell that it's going to be one of those classic albums that goes through life's changes with you for a while.

haha, nice. I have an old copy of it on vinyl with the transparent cover. Nothing beats the original sound of that album. On a side note, L.A. Woman is listed as EKS-75011 in the Elektra catalog. The album was released in early 1971. Around the time of the album's release, Jim Morrison moved to an apartment, the one he died in, in Paris located in the Bastille. The Bastille's city/ zip code is 75011. Kind of weird, huh?

For those of you interested, there will be a deluxe version of The Doors' last album with Morrison, L.A. Woman, at the end of the year. The band discovered some amazing studio outtakes they'll be including with the set. Right now, I'm only aware of a cover of 'Money' and a 14 minute blues jam but I'm sure there are some more goodies which will be on there. Unfortunately, the elusive Paris Blues will not be on this release :-( And, in more Doors news, the band has just secured an amazing quality recording from 1966 at the London Fog! This was before the band began their tenure at the Whisky-a
