  1. An earthquake of that magnitude is a relief--apparently, it takes some of the pressure off the faults and makes the "Big One" a little less likely (in the short term).
  2. Probably not the topic you want to hear right now, but Prefab Sprout's "When Love Breaks Down" is another fondly remembered tune: My love and I, we work well together But often we're apart Absence makes the heart lose weight, yeah, Till love breaks down, love breaks down Oh my, oh my, have you seen the weather The sweet September rain Rain on me like no other Until I drown, until I drown When love breaks down The things you do To stop the truth from hurting you When love breaks down The lies we tell, They only serve to fool ourselves, When love breaks down The things you do To stop the t
  3. As an unabashed '80s kid, I'd nominate "Tears" by the Chameleons UK as having some of my favorite lyrics from the decade: Tears (The Chameleons) It's just coincidence Well, you can talk that way But I have to say I don't believe in it It was a chill of chance, I decided to dance the days away And I wasn't worried at all Sneaking through the back door No, I wasn't worried at all Dreams are what you live for Waiting for the light to turn green Carry me home To the kindest eyes that I've ever seen Carry me home Well, can you tell me how will it be now? How will it be? Can you tell me, how
  4. I'd bake her cupcakes every day for the rest of her life if she'd let me.
  5. It's interesting to think what Morrissey would've sounded like with Richard on guitar--and maybe pitching in with the songwriting? One can dream. I'm still waiting for Richard's U.S. tour; it's been far too long since I saw him over here with the Longpigs.
  6. I never get around to these things, but I may have to change my tune: Talking Music: A Series of Music Discussions featuring Ben Gibbard, Bob Mould and others, presented by City Arts & Lectures and Noise Pop Tues, Sept 11 Ben Gibbard Musician

  8. It makes me wish I could see Zach at Largo this Friday.
  9. It's no Jessica McClure story...
  10. I clung to the belief that Dumbledore had not actually died, that it was a ruse between him and Snape. Does anyone else think that it sounds like James Potter was a total dick when he was in school, though?
  11. I know this video has been making the rounds, but dammit, it's brilliant: Stronger video
  12. Talk about late to the party: I had no idea that Stephen Fry read the British version of the audiobooks! I think I'll have to hit up Amazon UK after I finish this one (sometime this evening, I'm guessing).
  13. If I were in in town this weekend, I'd totally join you, Maudie. Has anyone checked out the big analysis piece about the movies in the Times? It's nice to see that critics are just as prone to geekiness too. (I have a major soft spot for the one about the British stars.)
  14. Great, sweaty show for the 100 (or thereabouts) of us that got in. I'll always have a soft spot for the Girls Can Tell tracks, but "The Underdog," "Cherry Bomb," and "Black Like Me" were awesome tonight.
  15. Regrettably, I never made it to Lounge Ax either, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of those solo shows. The moral of this thread seems to be: See Jeff solo if you possibly can.
  16. You can't go wrong with any Lounge Ax show. Of the more recent solo gigs, Marfa may be my favorite.
  17. According to Wilcoworld, the Oregon date is now sold out. Who'd have thunk it? Looking forward to the Minus 5, Richard Swift, and Wilco all on the same day.
  18. She looks like she just stepped crawled out of an ad for hair products...and Simpsons merchandise, of course. Say it isn't so!
  19. It entirely depends on your capacity for repetition, but having seen them a few times, I can say that I look forward to the onstage chemistry and ad-libs in each performance. They aren't reinventing themselves every night, but there's certainly some variation between gigs.
  20. Before you leave the house, remember to pack your: --Business socks --Casio DG20 --T-shirt from the team-building exercise you did for work (the baggy one with the holes in it) "Ain't no party Like my nana's tea party"
  21. The article had a lot of great insights into the way the band constructs songs. For example, I was struck by Glenn downplaying his contributions to "Impossible Germany," citing it as a vehicle for Nels's playing. Granted, the guitars are magnificent on the track, but they certainly aren't the only notable aspect of the tune. I also liked Glenn's exploration of the psychology behind certain songs and how they affect his drumming. I was listening to an interview with Jancee Dunn recently, and she said that the one way she could get surly, hungover band members to open up was to cozy up to and
