  2. Live Nation's CEO talks about breaking with Ticketmaster and gouging consumers firsthand, instead of through a third party: Live Nation: We Want In On Ticketmaster, StubHub Some of the more disturbing passages: That last one is truly news to me.
  3. We were talking about how there seems to be a law that requires a big Rick Rubin story to be written every couple of years or so, when the record industry is going through some other cataclysmic shift from which it will never recover.

  5. They soundchecked "Hell Is Chrome" at the Fillmore Auditorium, so maybe Duluth will get an earful.
  6. Worst: Probably Constitution Hall in DC, but I try to avoid the soulless spots as much as possible. Best: There's a lot of them, but my regional bias wins out: Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.
  7. I saw Catherine Keener with my own eyes, so that's a yes. John Krasinski, however, was reportedly doing an 826 benefit at Largo Wednesday night, so he's probably out of the running.

  9. ...and Gillian Welch, Nick Lowe, Teddy Thompson, Emmylou Harris, and far too many others to list. It'll be good to see Jeff on the Friday; it'll be a lot less crowded than Saturday or Sunday. Andrew Dowdall, if you're reading this, maybe this is the sign you need!
  10. OH MY. Five blocks from my flat. Come one, come all!
  11. Agreed, and not just in the middle section. After we swarmed the stage, there were more enthusiastic faces up front, but that didn't make up for the general cluelessness of a lot of the crowd. Still, it could've been a lot worse. Kudos to the band for awakening what might've been a comatose crowd and kicking out a fun show.
  12. A couple of slight amendments to the previously posted setlist: Sunken Treasure You Are My Face I Am Trying to Break Your Heart Either Way Handshake Drugs Pot Kettle Black War on War Shake It Off Side with the Seeds A Shot in the Arm Impossible Germany Sky Blue Sky Too Far Apart Via Chicago Jesus, etc. Hate It Here Walken I'm the Man Who Loves You ------------------------- Misunderstood California Stars Hummingbird On and On and On -------------------------- I'm Always in Love Outta Mind (Outtasite) In A Future Age Spiders (Kidsmoke) Soundcheck: Either Way Company in My Back Passenger Side
  13. A multiple-night return to the Fillmore would be most welcome. I don't think I'll make all four, but I could likely squeeze in a couple of them.
  14. OH. MY. GOD. We got there about 10:45 behind about a dozen people, but many of them ordered takeout, so we got a table in the restaurant. I had the Salumi Salami and the caprese, which were so good that I didn't eat for the rest of the day. Paul got the pork cheeks (Kris!). On any other trip, Salumi would be *the* highlight, but still, it was a nice pit stop on the road to Portland. I also want to mention that there was a VC babies supersummit on the hill at McMenamins, where Sandoz's little ones (Miles and Ruby) met Dreamin' Judy's bambino (Hannah). We hear toys were shared and that the c
  15. We had every intention of doing so, but the combination of ticket confusion, venue confusion, and a number of other diversions kept us away. Oh well!
  16. Since no one has started a thread for tonight's show yet, despite its relatively early conclusion (around 9:35 p.m. or so due to the venue's curfew), I'll start with the setlist: Either Way You Are My Face IATTBYH Remember The Mountain Bed Handshake Drugs Pot Kettle Black A Shot in the Arm Side With The Seeds Shake It Off War on War Impossible Germany Too Far Apart Jesus, etc. Walken I'm The Man Who Loves You Hummingbird On and On and On --------------------------------- Bob Dylan's 49th Beard The Late Greats Hate It Here I'm Always in Love Outtamind (Outtasite) -----------------------------
  17. I saw that too--beats the hell out of the usual Vows articles. Carl used to pop up at gigs in San Francisco when he was dating a woman out here; I guess that explains his absence over the past couple of years. Well, let's hope he doesn't lose his sardonic style (but even if he does, all the happiness to them).
  18. The curfew for all shows at the Greek is 11pm.
  19. I nurse the very vain hope that he and John Peel are kicking back with a pint together, checking out the new singles for the week.
  20. Wow, he made a huge part of my record collection possible. Rest in peace, Tony.
  21. Last one, I promise, but I'd be remiss to not mention Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love": Tell her I'll be waiting In the usual place With the tired and weary And there's no escape To need a woman You've got to know How the strong get weak And the rich get poor You're running with me Don't touch the ground We're restless hearted Not the chained and bound The sky is burning A sea of flame Though your world is changing I will be the same The storm is breaking Or so it seems We're too young to reason Too grown up to dream Now spring is turning Your face to mine I can hear your laughter I can
