  1. I don't think I recall ever seeing as many yahoos up front as at this show. And Jeff openly mocked several of them, making for a pretty humorous evening... Considering the relatively early curfew -- 10:30 pm -- the band actually squeezed in a decent number of songs (though I'm pretty sure there was at least one audible from the printed setlist with Jeff nixing War on War after Cali Stars and going right into Jesus): Wilco (the song) IATTBYH Bull Black Nova Remember the Mountain Bed One Wing Muzzle of Bees A Shot in the Arm At Least That's What You Said Impossible Germany Forget the Flowe
  2. They were Jimmy Vivino, otherwise known as the guitarist for the Tonight Show band/Max Weinberg 7, and Chris Seefried, who is apparently a friend of Vivino's and a singer-songwriter and producer in his own right.
  3. Here was the complete setlist for Night 2 at the Wiltern: Via Chicago Company In My Back Wilco (the song) IATTBYH One Wing A Shot in the Arm Side With The Seeds Bull Black Nova Jesus, etc. Impossible Germany Forget The Flowers Deeper Down California Stars (w/Jonathan Wilson on guitar) Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again) Heavy Metal Drummer A Magazine Called Sunset You Never Know --------------------- Poor Places> Reservations> Spiders (Kidsmoke) --------------------- The Late Greats Hate It Here Walken I'm The Man Who Loves You I'm A Wheel
  4. Jonathan Wilson went on at 8 and played about 45-50 minutes. Wilco was on at 9:15 and played until about 11:35.
  5. I would agree with a lot of that, for sure. It was far from their best show technically, but sometimes that makes for a better (or at least from the audience perspective, more lively) show. Jeff had a few very minor lyric flubs and the sound seemed kind of hit-or-miss at times and Jeff didn't seem entirely comfortable with his equipment for at least the first part of the show. Impossible Germany was looking dire when his SG went out, but Matrix definitely saved the day and Nels' improvisatory genius really paid off and made for a memorable version of that song. It's hard to say re: Deeper Do

  7. Haha, if they didn't do Casino Queen in Vegas, that would have been as bad as the time they played on a landing and didn't play Heavy Metal Drummer. They have seemingly been on top of the local pandering so far on this trip, though (Hotel Arizona in Arizona, a nod to Woody Guthrie in Oklahoma, etc.). Is there any doubt California Stars will be played tonight? But in all seriousness, sounds like it was a fun show. Anytime you get Magazine, that's a positive. How packed was it? Looked like the venue was pretty huge.
  8. I haven't come close to reading this entire post yet, but I just have to say that paragraphs are great things... Glad you had a good time, though. And I admire the enthusiasm.

    Watt & Nels

I think he mentioned trying to get Bobby Bradford to play with him at Angel City this year. Not sure if that was a separate thing or joining the Singers, but that would be pretty cool.

    Watt & Nels

For handful of people on here who care, I just heard that Nels will be sticking around NYC for at least a few more days after the Aug. 1 show with Watt and Co. He's scheduled to play Aug. 4 at Le Poisson Rouge as part of Jenny Scheinman's "Mischief and Mayhem" band (almost the same band that toured briefly a couple of years ago, the tour during which Nels contracted the chicken pox!) The band this time around will be Jenny Scheinman (violin), Nels Cline (guitar), Matt Penman (bass) and Jim Black (drums). I'm not familiar with Penman, but the other three are all fantastic players, so check th
  11. No, it was the usual Tele. I just had a brain cramp while I was dealing with a shoddy WiFi connection. Thanks for the quasi-correction.
  12. Fun show, but the jackass that threw like three Sharpies up on stage right at the start of Misunderstood that hit Nels hard should be ashamed of him/herself (I can't imagine it wasn't a guy). At least Jeff called out the "douchebag" with the laser pointer. This probably makes it sound like a horrible crowd, but other than those two bad apples, most people around me seemed very respectful and into the show. And other than the Sharpie incident, the band seemed to be in a very goofy mood -- Jeff joked about how they had been watching DragonForce videos all day, for example, and played a brief o
  13. Can't make 'em all, Joyce! But I'm glad that you were able to go, and had a great time...
  14. Wasn't there, but I can say with a fair amount of authority that they didn't play the Heartless Bastards' guitars. I'm no guitar expert, but I know Jeff did acquire a goldtop Les Paul (a vintage copy, I believe) fairly recently. Not sure about the J Mascis Jazzmaster, but it appears Nels has brought back that double neck Danelectro (?) he used once or twice last year.
  15. Personally, I think "You Never Know" would be the song most likely to grab a new listener. Not that I don't like "Deeper Down," but the former is just a pretty darn catchy tune. I hear it's already a radio hit in Europe...
  16. Really nice photos! I went to the show at Radio City last night, and enjoyed the Hazards of Love performance (though I think I'd need to see it at least once more to take it all in). In the second set, they did "Begin the Begin" with Peter Buck as the first song of the encore. And could there have been a better choice of a cover to do with Becky and Shara than Heart's "Crazy On You?" That was pretty kickass. Setlist for the second set at Radio City was: The Crane Wife 3 July, July! Billy Liar (w/crowd chorus-style singalong) Sleepless The Bachelor and the Bride Dracula's Daughter> O
  17. I think we know that fella around these here parts. Interesting review, Andrew. Didn't agree with everything, but I thought it was about as even-handed as a fan's review could be. And at least as far as this show was concerned, probably more accurate than not.
  18. I know they definitely had a tour of the Alhambra. As for group pictures, well... Which one was the palace of Carlos V? Is that just the main palace you walk through, the one with the throne room, etc.?
  19. Say You Miss Me was dedicated to Olga and Elena -- hopefully I'm spelling their names right -- who were the band's Spanish liaisons.
  20. Not that it necessarily had anything to do with the show itself, but I would be willing to bet that anyone who was at this show and doesn't already live in San Sebastian probably wants to move there... You Are My Face Wilco (the song) IATTBYH One Wing Muzzle of Bees A Shot in the Arm Side With The Seeds Handshake Drugs Bull Black Nova Jesus, etc. Impossible Germany I'll Fight California Stars The Late Greats Hummingbird ------------- Via Chicago> Spiders (Kidsmoke) ------------- Hate It Here Walken I'm The Man Who Loves You I'm A Wheel

  22. This was a fun show. I can add some more later, but the band was really loose in a good way. Jeff had some good banter -- for example, a guy in the crowd yelled out "Kansas City!" as an apparent homage to the Kicking Television record and Jeff just sort of shook his head and yelled back, "Ice tongs!" He went on to say, "Let's yell out random things at each other." The highlight for me was when two kids, a boy and a girl, came down to the foot of the stage right in front of Jeff at the start of the encore. At one point during "Spiders," Jeff came over and leaned down to the girl, threw her his
  23. The first Wilco show in Portugal, and it was a pretty solid performance. A very respectful crowd that pretty much stayed seated throughout, which I'm sure was OK with the band since for awhile it was sort of unclear exactly how many people would show up. But it eventually filled in pretty well. It certainly was a beautiful theater, pretty newly restored by the looks of it. I think I saw that Andrew Bird was scheduled to play there not long after Wilco. Anyway, in one way or another, Jeff mentioned about three separate times that there were plenty of good seats still available for the following
