Wilco — 12/11/14, Chicago, IL (Riviera Theatre) [Winterlude Night 5]

I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you on multiple fronts here, so best let others chime in on the pandemic, etc. I think it hasn't been as bad as last time, though some cracks are starting to show. Ban on snogging probably always helps, though... -

Other notable banter... Before the rarely played Everlasting Everything, Jeff admitted that "this song doesn't get a lot of requests. One of my favorite songs I ever wrote, and nobody likes it. Well, you know what? Bill Fay likes it, so fuck you." Of course Jeff broke down and apologized after the song. I couldn't help but imagine half the crowd being like, "Who's Bill Fay?" -

Ah, good to see you as well. I have to just post one thing real quick... Maybe the best single thing from tonight's show was during the hootenanny when Mike took a pillow to his melodica during the breakdown part of A Shot in the Arm. Well played, Mr. Jorgensen, well played. -

Jeff said they were playing it as it originally was conceived (demoed?). The frenetic double-time album version evolved later, as I understand it. This performance was a stripped down, slower version of the song. -

I guess I just meant weirdest in terms of setlists. It's hard to explain, but at certain points, I really felt like I had no idea what was coming next (which isn't always the case) and the pacing and song selection was just so all over the place. That doesn't always work, but in this case, it just felt liberating in a way. Like they could just do anything at any time, and did... So yeah, it just felt unique. Like you'll never hear this many random songs in one show again. It was definitely, in some sense, a show for the diehards. Duly noted, and thanks for the links! I always just refe -

Glenn's extended drum solo on Let's Not Get Carried Away was truly something to behold. Somehow I don't think Jeff was really in any hurry to resume the song...haha. Hard to believe they hadn't done LNGCA since late 2006. From banter corner, Jeff had a couple choice bits but perhaps none after Message From Mid-Bar when he talked about how "hate will keep us together" and how he believed it was more important that we hate the same things than love the same things, or something to that effect and mentioned hating racism. Then alluding to a lyric from the song, "Hate will save the dolphins, I st -

All good observations, particularly the one about Jeff's guitar playing. He was definitely on fire from that perspective, IMHO. Though he seemed a little distracted or focused (or something) at the beginning, I haven't seen him attack the guitar like that in some time. Of course the material definitely suited that, with Feed Of Man, Laminated Cat, the electric Spiders and even Sunken Treasure all giving Jeff some opportunities to shred a bit. I enjoyed seeing that, and maybe it was even a little cathartic for him. It's funny, I remember when Pieholden Suite used to be the Holy Grail for a lo -

Well put, my dear! It's not the same as it was, but I for one am glad you're still willing and able to make a kamikaze run every once in a while...always great to see you. I think it's pretty cool that so many lasting friendships have been formed because of this band. That's definitely something worth celebrating! -

I know tonight's show was broadcast live on the radio — by the way, can anyone who was listening say whether they bleeped Jeff when he said "shitty" at one point? I was curious — but for posterity's sake, here was the complete setlist as played: Less Than You Think> Ashes Of American Flags ($6.53) Bull Black Nova I Am Trying To Break Your Heart> One Wing Panthers (full band debut) Blue-Eyed Soul I'll Fight Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might Radio Cure At My Window Sad and Lonely Secret of the Sea What Light Hesitating Beauty Box Full of Letters The Late Greats The Good Part Jesus, e

Yeah, that was definitely a highlight (the highlight?)! I think at least one of my seatmates couldn't quite believe her ears when they started playing that. It's a definite rarity, like a true deep cut, especially for this lineup. The band played it somewhat regularly in summer and fall 2000 when they toured behind Mermaid II, but I'm pretty sure this was only the second time the current lineup has played it. They did it two summers ago at the Hoboken Americanarama stop when Warren Haynes joined them on slide. This time, Nels handled the slide duties and sounded great. It looked like they were

Well, you couldn't have asked much more from the band on a Wednesday night on the eve of a big hometown run. Far from using it as a mere warmup gig, though, Jeff and Co. really pulled out a killer set for their "home away from home" crowd. More to come, but for now here was the complete setlist as played: Company In My Back Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might Hell Is Chrome Ashes Of American Flags War On War No More Poetry (Jeff solo acoustic, essentially, with some percussive hints from Glenn) Cars Can't Escape Feed Of Man Someday Soon It's Just That Simple Airline To Heaven Jesus, etc.

Thanks for the report! Sounds like you guys got a little bit of a serendipitous performance from Nels (maybe because he didn't have too much time to think about it). I saw that they decided to cancel the following night's show in Portland, ME, though I'm not sure about the rest of the dates. Hopefully Julian is doing better because the two of them together really are terrific, but sometimes you get "lucky" to see Nels get to do his own thing. He certainly doesn't do it very often, and I think it genuinely freaks him out to play solo — hence the red wine — even though he's obviously more than c

Yeah, it wasn't quite that extreme this time but I could just imagine Jeff in the wings thinking, "Damn, I have to follow this?" Maybe if they were doing something a little more uptempo like Only The Lord Knows it would have been OK, but You Are Not Alone was just a tough one in that slot.
