  1. The technical issues weren't too severe, but just enough to kind of hamper the flow of the set at times. Still always great to see her, though. And we were hoping Dave (and/or Gill) was going to show up, but then we remembered they had their own show — in Santa Barbara, I think? — that night...oh well.
  2. I don't have a baseline in terms of her regular performances at HSBG, so I couldn't say if this one was pretty typical (or worse or better, for that matter). But I can say I was hoping for a little more collaboration; sort of expected at least one guest to join her at some point. And also there wasn't an encore, which again I don't know if that's typical or not because they have to close the park. Also, she seemed to be having some trouble with her in-ear monitors and keeping her guitar in tune at points. Didn't keep a setlist, but off the top of my head I remember her doing Orphan Girl, My
  3. Haha, tell us how you really feel! Guess Tweedy won't be booking that In Zed tour anytime soon, then?
  4. What can I say? Guess I must have learned it from Hank Williams.
  5. I noticed that you were enthusiastic about those fellows! Certainly one couldn't help but be charmed by their enthusiasm and energy. Musically, I had some thoughts that I'll keep to myself but especially given all the bluegrass to come, it was definitely something different...
  6. A glorious day in Golden Gate Park, and an interesting slot for the Tweedy band's West Coast debut (as it were) on a stage made up of mostly very traditional bluegrass acts and traditional festival headliner/closing act Emmylou Harris. In fact, the host of the Banjo stage introduced Tweedy in part as "something for the youngsters." When was the last time that happened? Can't say a huge portion of the crowd was into the set — we saw at least one older gentleman looking Jeff up on Wikipedia — but there were pockets of fans scattered around as you would expect at a festival. Consider this a tea
  7. I'll assume you're not being sarcastic, so perhaps you didn't know that Nels' wife is Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto.
  8. This link probably should go in the Calvin College thread (Grand Rapids, MI 10/2), fwiw.
  9. I hear that's a good one...
  10. Wait, so was this the live debut of Pigeons then? I hadn't seen it on any other setlists from this current run, but maybe I missed it. Certainly it hasn't been done very often, so you got a Sukierae rarity!
  11. Sounds like a pretty cool bill, Lou! Where was that? I'm curious to know where Jeff heard Love Like A Wire since it doesn't appear that Izzo ever released a recording of it anywhere (it's not on her one solo record). I'm guessing maybe it was a demo of hers he heard at some point in the late 90s Chicago scene, but I'd be interested to know.
  12. Man, sorry to hear that the show wasn't too well-attended. And that the crowd was a bit subdued. I felt the same at the State in Portland on Sunday night — I heard there were only two guys who stood during California Stars — but maybe that's just the vibe of these shows to a certain extent. Too bad, though, because for as much joking as Jeff does about the abundance of waltzes, they do really rock out sometimes. So lucky you got Secret of the Sea! I'm not sure people realize how much of a rarity that one is, especially solo. (And just like there's only only one key in Give Back The Key To My
  13. Jeff even acknowledged as much as one point, saying that the free show "might have taken a bite out of the paid one" and joking that "I do all our booking, so that might have been an oversight on my part."
  14. Guess I gotta start one of these threads! Kind of a weirdly subdued "crowd" (well, what crowd there was), but a fun show nonetheless. More later if no one else chimes in. But for now, here was the complete setlist as played: Nobody Dies Anymore Honey Combed Flowering Summer Noon World Away New Moon High As Hello Desert Bell new song-Why Why Why Love Like A Wire [Diane Izzo] Hazel Low Key Fake Fur Coat Diamond Light, Pt. 1 I Am Trying To Break Your Heart* Forget The Flowers* Passenger Side* Gun* Please Tell My Brother* Hesitating Beauty* Kicking Television* ("hotel lobby" version) Theologians

    Wilcobase?

Miss you and the site, Rob! I know it's on Wilcoworld in some form, but it's nowhere near as user-friendly! Hope you're well...
  16. Hey notary (or mods, if you can)...you might want to change the date to 9/27 on the thread title. It may save some confusion in the future.
  17. For posterity and such, the complete setlist as played: Nobody Dies Anymore Honey Combed Flowering Summer Noon World Away New Moon High As Hello Desert Bell new song-Why Why Why Love Like A Wire [Diane Izzo] Wait For Love Low Key Fake Fur Coat Diamond Light, Pt. 1 I Am Trying Break Your Heart* Radio King* Please Tell My Brother* Hesitating Beauty* New Madrid* Born Alone* Jesus, etc.* Passenger Side* (started and restarted) Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season)* I'm The Man Who Loves You* ---------------------------------------- Please Don't Let Me Be So Understood (live debut) Only The Lord
  18. But of course! He sort of shrugged when they started played the opening chords, as if to say, 'Of course we're gonna play this one. Too good of a pandering opportunity not to.'" Haha. Jeff had some great banter about Akron, in general. About trying to go to Chrissie Hynde's restaurant but finding out it had shut down because "not enough of you went there"; about "whatever horrible, twisted things you did to those people" to cause them to become Devo; and about loving "your town, your canal, your decaying infrastructure."
  19. I was just kidding...haha. I'll never give this up! (Just like tonight's show will go on forever...;-)) But nice work on being quick and accurate! I take your point about the show, but I guess they've set the bar pretty high for themselves. Just wanted to remind people that it's their second show back in a year. They got to rehearse a little bit, I'm sure, but every show they do will probably get a little better (at least as far as the playing goes and hopefully the setlists will follow).
  20. Once again, jcap1767 for the win on the posting of the setlist. I might be able to finally retire! Beg to differ about a "disappointing" setlist, though. Any show with a full-band True Love Will Find You In The End is a pretty unique one. I seem to be unable to look it up on Wilcoworld (we miss you Wilcobase!), but I gather that song has only been played by the full band a few times ever. Maybe less than 15, unless they did it a lot in the real early days? So to get a beautiful version of that tonight to close the main set was a real treat. I mean, there were quite a few repeats from Colum
  21. Don't really have a tremendous amount to add, but I'll "sign off" on the accuracy of the setlist posted above by jcap1767. The band played exactly what was on the printed setlist with the exception of The Lonely 1, which was listed as the show closer but got cut. The crew was actually bringing out the necessary guitars/implements for that one, but Jeff waved them off. It would've been an interesting choice to end the show, to be sure. Obviously it was great to see the band play again after nearly a year off. For the most part, they seemed pretty focused on playing the repertoire again and ge
  22. Surprised that we (or at least I) haven't heard from the Tweedy management folks about this yet. Or maybe we have and I missed it. Anyway, a cool incentive to get out to your local independent record shop for all you completists... http://modern-vinyl.com/2014/08/29/tweedy-7-includes-coupon-for-lp/
  23. That was the band they were in together that I think may have done like one show (which I unfortunately missed).
