I like it...'70s poppy. It's better than at least 1/3 of the songs on SBS.
-
God, that's almost completely unreadable. I'm willing to give Bennett a chance, but not enough to try to decipher that mess. Nice job, "Glide Magazine."

What song would you like to see Neil and Wilco do together?
indy81 replied to bold992003's topic in Just A Fan
Is there any precedent for this? Has NY ever let an opening act play with him? Or are people just getting all worked up for fun? -
It's funny that Tweedy claims he currently "hates" all of Wilco's previous albums, when the new songs sound exactly like outtakes from SBS.

Ugh, gotta disagree there. The bassist is a decent singer if he stays in his limited range (sounds great on "King"), but the other two guys are pretty blah. (But then again, I like Cuomo's "new" voice.) All three of the songs not written by Cuomo stand out like sore thumbs, especially when the bonus tracks are so much better. Cuomo definitely has his weaknesses as a songwriter, but this album reminds me of the last Creedence record where the rhythm section was writing songs when you had freakin' John Fogerty in the band. Or even more so like The Who's "A Quick One", because of all the

Better than the last one, but nowhere near as good as the first three. Reminds me of Maladroit in that there's some good stuff but some dross. Pretty uneven but that lends it a certain charm. Nice to see them mixing it up a little with the longer songs. As usual, a few of the "bonus" songs on the Deluxe Edition are much better than some of the songs on the album. Makes you question the value of democracy in a band like this.

"Bill Murray would never do anything like that! I like his movies too much!"

The quality of the B sides for this album is surprisingly high. If they would've thrown some of the more upbeat B-sides on SBS instead of "Leave Me", "Shake It Off", etc. they might've really had something. "One True Vine" is gorgeous too.
-
To me, SBS is the definition of a minor work from a major artist. A bunch of good songs but a few clunkers (and some of the b-sides are better than tracks that made the album). You get the sense it's a placeholder between two more substantial albums -- at least I hope so! It's their weakest record to date but an enjoyable listen and a nice addition to the discography.

For the record, here are the unique songs from each night: 5/15: Sunken Treasure, Ashes of American Flags, Company in My Back, On and On and On, Far Far Away, New Madrid, Passenger Side 5/16: Via Chicago, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, Muzzle of Bees, Kamera, War on War, It's Just That Simple, Forget the Flowers, Can't Stand It, Poor Places, Reservations, I'm Always in Love, The Late Greats 5/17: Blood of the Lamb, ELT, Side with the Seeds, She's a Jar, Box Full of Letters, Airline to Heaven, Pick Up the Change, Too Far Apart, Monday, Bob Dylan's 49th Beard, Just a Kid

Actually, it seems like they barely played much from SBS at all...none of the lesser played tracks like "What Light", "Shake It Off, "Sky Blue Sky", "Either Way", "Thanks I Get", much less "Please Be Patient" or "Leave Me." Maybe the band is tired of that album already. But otherwise it looks like there was a decent amount of variation from night to night, with some rare songs - I don't think people should've expected a repeat of the Chicago residency.

Funny how (in the other thread) you can say the worst things about great musicians and no one bats an eye, but start talking shit about celebrities or sitcoms and everyone freaks!

People are overthinking the "building fee." It's just an arbitrary charge added by the venue to make some extra money. Simple as that. It's sometimes called a "restoration fee" or "maintenance fee" to make it seem like there's some special reason for it. But it's just a cash grab. It has nothing to do with the band paying to book the venue.

No Neko in Madison?? Damn, I'm glad I decided not to go. That wouldn't have been a nice surprise. All the advertisements and promotion specifically said she was going to be there.

A Thread for Musical Blasphemy you Truly Believe
indy81 replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
No band has been overrated as much as The Band is overrated on this board. And I like The Band. Quadrophenia might be the best rock album ever. U2 is the best band of the last 25 years. Jethro Tull's '70s output is criminally underrated. Led Zeppelin is the best rock band ever. Weezer's Green Album is just as good as the Blue Album. Cheap Trick's output from 1977-1979 is the best rock to ever come out of Illinois. Jeff Tweedy gets a lot of credit for stuff that Jay Bennett wrote. A.M. is a lot better than Sky Blue Sky. -
Are you talking about a Wilco-only Mermaid Ave. or a Tweedy-only? Wilco plays on most of the Bragg songs. Tweedy/Bennett co-wrote "She Came Along to Me", Bragg wrote "Another Man Done Gone" which Tweedy sings.
-
Nice poppy song with a strong vocal. It's a perfect b-side 'cause it's pretty fluffy and unsubstantial, but then again it's better than some of the songs that made the album...
-
A terrific album. "Wreckroom" is better than anything on SBS...I kinda wish they had saved it for the Wilco album, so we could have heard live performances of it.
-
The Stones put out some brilliant albums, but where's the love for The Who? I'd give Let It Bleed the edge over Tommy and Exile is obviously a masterpiece...but Leeds is infinitely better than Ya-Yas, Who's Next better than Sticky Fingers, Quadrophenia better than Goat's Head and IORR combined. (And yes, Zeppelin from 1969-1974 is better than both.)
-
Hmm...I'm not sure someone is "ignorant" because they think Summerteeth and YHF are Wilco's best albums.
-
I feel for the folks who were going to the Charleston gig, but some people are holding the band to an impossible standard of integrity. There's not a serious band in the country who wouldn't jump at a chance for such a high-profile TV appearance, if all it meant was *rescheduling* (not canceling) a single show. When you buy a ticket, it's with the understanding that a band or promoter can cancel or reschedule a concert at any time, as long as they offer refunds. I've been to shows that were canceled a couple of hours before showtime - with a note on the door of the venue. It's unlikely to

Got a flu shot, went to one show, didn't wait in line, got real sick. Guess I'm unlucky.
-
I can't resist adding a "me too." Went to the show on Tuesday, sick as hell by Friday night. Still sick. Haven't had the flu for years - can't say I missed it. Great show, but this is definitely not cool.
-
There are a bunch of gems on the later Weezer records. I guess I don't see how songs like "O Girlfriend" and "Slave" are somehow worse than "Holiday", "The World Has Turned..." etc. The problem is that people want an immature, college-age spill-your-guts album from a guy pushing 40 who's into meditation. Pinkerton is such a great album partly because it's such an embarrassing listen.

They HAVE to record the Winter Residency
indy81 replied to Relatively Clean Rivers's topic in Just A Fan
I'd rather they didn't record it for official release, because then there will be excellent audience recordings available of all five nights. If they record for a DVD, tapers will have to go stealth.
