quarter23cd
I appreciate many of those. Not sure of the point of this, however, considering that I'm assuming that their definition of "underappreciated" probably refers to a lack of exposure by mainstream media outlets like, say, Rolling Stone. Oh well. I'm going to stop trying to understand the logic behind music magazines now and get back to the appreciating...
foolnrain97
yeh, Bob Cigar threw me a little Bob Seger definately threw me. I don't know who this Robert Seger fellow is, but it sounds to me like he should stop throwing people. That's not nice at all.
jff
Why the hell aren't the Pixies on there? The reason the Pixies are not on there is because they are SO appreciated that they were able to reunite and become multi-millionaires. Prior to the reunion, David Lovering was a low budget clown/magician and Kim Deal was living with her parents. Joey Santiago had fallen off the face of the earth. Only Frank Black had sustained some level of success, but even he was only playing small clubs. The Replacements are hugely over-appreciated.
MadMonkey
Nick Drake, Gene Clark, all Bluegrass and EARLY American folk. Well anyway reading through Rolling Stone I found this quote from Elvis Costello in the 100 greatest artists when describing playing with Paul McCartney onstage: "the crowd's reaction was so intense that it all but drowned the song out. It was very thrilling but also rather disconcerting. Perhaps I understood in that moment one of the reasons why the Beatles had to stop performing. The songs weren't theirs anymore. They were everybody's." Sound familiar?
EL the Famous
The Replacements are hugely over-appreciated. Pfffffft.
dannygutters
This list seems to be Artist that are more hip than popular. Or maybe a list of artists RS thinks are hokey but are actually good? (cheap trick, cars, alice cooper). I dunno, when I think Underappreciated I think of artists making amazing work that people would like but don't notice for whatever reason, maybe their from a different genneration or in a different genre or don't have any 'hits'. That's different than un-popular. How about someone like John Fahey or Paul Burch. Heck, I could rattle off a page of country blues artists most people don't know the name of who could knock your socks off and make you cry. Also, didn't RS vote The Band the most important American Band or somesuch in a previous list. Stupid.
bobbob1313
I know that 90% of RS is crapola, but man that 40th anniversary issue is a keeper! GREAT interviews with a number of folks.Yep. I love the Ringo interview, when he talks about George asking him if he had played on All Things Must Pass because he was working on the reissue and Ringo said "I don't know, I don't think so". And then George calls him back a few days later and says "You fucker, you played on 80% of the thing!"

I basically think that anyone I've ever heard of via someone else can not possibly be underrated.
Atticus
Has Rolling Stone compiled a best of Rolling Stones lists list? That I might read.

MIKEPUA
I think the Talking Heads are pretty appreciated (as well they should be)\ agreed!!! As far as I knew they got the respect they deserved. Maybe I missed something. I love them, but then again I love quite a few bands on the un-list.
H to the ickle
It's weird how that's a list about under appreciated music when a good chunk of them have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (whatever that's worth these days).
kidsmoke
I do think early Bob Seger is unappreciated. So sue me. But before you do, please put on "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" & turn it up to 11. Then play "Back in 72". Then play "Katmandu", just because. A bit louder please. OK, thank you.
Adam2
Also, didn't RS vote The Band the most important American Band or somesuch in a previous list. Stupid. Yeah, real stupid. Giving a group like The Band their well-deserved recognition. The nerve of them! They should have gotten in touch with you so you could rattle off a country-blues list for them. kidsmoke
heck, even "Mainstreet" is a good song Oh Yeah! "Beautiful Loser" too. I think, unfortunately, that all people know him for now are his "Like a Truck Rock" ads.....which, hey, give the guy a break...he's getting older and has a family to support. I guess I can understand how he'd want to earn that advertisement money.

Unfortunately, he was way overplayed on the radio from the late'70's on in the Midwest. I just got burned out on him.

They should have gotten in touch with you so you could rattle off a country-blues list for them. You're completely missing the point. The list is underappreciated bands, and it's real hard to make the case that a band that's voted "Most Important American Band" (by the same organization that sponsored this list) is truly underappreciated. I love the Band. Now I have no knowledge of the accolade RS is supposed to have hung on the Band, but if that's the case, it does seem a little stupid in the next breath to declare them underappreciated. Sir Stewart
I thought dannygutters' point was that The Band is kinda Canadian.
