I've asked before, and still have not recieved a solid answer.

Why is it that some fans become upset when thier favorite band becomes popular?

I mean really, is it that you just cant stand the fact that you might like something mainstream? You were a big fan of Boy, but once those bastardos sold out and released Rattle and Hum fergeit it. Now every 15 year old kid with a bad case of acne is a U2 Fan. Not you though, you've moved on and "found" Husker Du.

I didnt get it then, and I dont get it now

I think you might've meant to start a thread? This is a whole other thing.

You did your research, and for that a grateful message board salutes you. I missed that one.

I printed this thread out last night and slept with it under my pillow. Because I care.

Songs in TV shows or movies is great exposure for a musician and not the same thing as selling a song for an ad; sorry I don't buy that. The argument here (for however goofy it is), doesn't extend to move/TV music, which is always fair game. Any and all musicians want their work used in conjunction with other types of art.

Ok, point taken. Take the one sentence about TV shows out of my post and I still stand behind it.

I don't know...I kinda took this post:

No worries, you won't be fighting me for tickets, but you will be competing with thousands of others who just love that song in that there commercial. They'll be easy to spot, their lighters and cheers will go up as the first chords of "The Thanks I Get"

You'd better pray you are wearing your hand made buffalo moccasins today, motherfucker. Or I'm hunting you down.

Bought at a tribe-owned casino, no doubt.

as an indictment of potential new fans who might not have heard about Wilco the right way or who know how to listen correctly.

Jesus man, have you tried to get New Pornographers tickets lately? Nearly impossible since they blew up after that whole UPS or South Western University ad thing.

That's a game that people in cliques or groups do - I have never been into a scene, or clique or whatever. I rather like Rattle and Hum by the way - saw it in a theater - twice.

Could someone let me know if there is anything in these previous 17 pages about weather or not my first act VW guitar will appreciate in value because of this?

I don't have anything new to add but, comon, don't lie, you discovered nick drake from that cabrio commercial too.

I need a full rundown of everything you own to ensure it wasn't produced by a corporation.

He should check out the definition of 'corporation,' too, while he's at it.

Not really.

They way I see it, and I'm not saying I'm right and everyone else is wrong, is that the VW ad and the anger surrounding it is the same as when a band becomes a mainstream act.

Being from Chicago (the greatest city in the world), I may be at a disadvantage when it comes to Wilco though, in that there is a radio presence for Wilco at 'XRT - although not as large as the Talking Heads... I've always seen Wilco, and to a lesser extent UT as the next big thing. I've been waiting basically since Anodyne for them to take off.

So a TV ad is just more proof to me that Wilco is the next big thing. I'm just glad I got to see them way back when it was easier. But if VW helps tune more fans into them - thats great.
