Summerteeth

Recommended Posts

So i discovered Wilco maybe 2 years ago. I started with AGIB, then Yankee and kicking tele, then got into some of jeffs acoustic stuff, downloaded the more popular songs from the other albums, and then finally SBS.

It was just this past summer when i picked up Summerteeth.

and wow... the rest is history.....

Summerteeth is hands down my favorite wilco record. Does this also go for many other of you? Because i NEVER hear people talking about it. Whats up with that? The only song i'll skip over is "in a future age" other than that i absolutely love the rest. I had been previously familar "via" and "shot in the arm" due to frequent setlist apperances. . But honestly, if you ask me, i dont really care for those as much compared to like "pieholed suite" and "when you wake up feeling old". i would take the kicking televisioin versions over the ST ones anyday out of the week.

I dont know how it was able to sit in the shadows for that long.

How do the rest of you enjoy Summerteeth in relation to the other albums.

I had always heard about the whole shock factor surrounding Yankee's sound and heard that previous albums were more folk-oriented so i had figured ST was like that. But its a total pop record. and i absolutely love it.... now i just gotta get AM and Being There, im pretty excited...

cheers.

A.M. and Being There are outstanding as well. I really don't think Wilco is capable of making an average record.

As for Summerteeth, from what I can see a lot of the 'wayback' fans count it as their favorite. Personally I came in pretty late as well, so not as much baggage and I guess I can be more objective about the catalog. Honestly tho, I'd have a hard time ranking the Wilco albums against each other. They're all THAT good, and that includes A.M. (and SBS!!). :)

I've been listening to Wilco from the beginning, and so far I go between YHF and ST as my favorites, depending on my mood. ELT, Can't Stand It, She's A Jar... it's a great album.

This and Ghost go back and forth for the distinction of being my second favorite album by the Wilcos, Foxtrot will probably always be number one. It's an amazing record, lyrically it's probably Tweedy's best work. You haven't really lived until you've driven someone who just gave you the "just friends" speech home with this record on. Or actually make that you have lived a healthy and very good life if you have never done that.

I agree there. I don't hate A.M., I just think their other albums are a lot better.

One thing I haven't figured out, what's the big deal with Too Far Apart? Members here seem to be going nuts over the band playing it lately, is it just the rarety? It's on okay song, but not really one of the stronger cuts from A.M., IMHO.

Yeah. According to WilcoBase it hadn't been played live in 7 years (until this tour).

OK song...it sounds like a song that Gov't Mule would tear up!

Yep...checked wilcobase, they haven't played That's Not The Issue in 10 years, and I Thought I Held You has only been played ONCE...in 1995. :D (that song has such an achingly beautiful lap steel)

Realistically, if they're gonna play something off A.M. and I'm lucky enough to be at the show, I hope it's Should've Been In Love.

I know a lot people don't like the lyrics to it or just don't like the song, but if I could hear one song from A.M. with this lineup, it would be Casino Queen.

With Nels tearing up that riff, and Jeff, John and Pat all belting out the lyrics, I think that song would have some serious energy.

I'd like to hear that boogie jam too! :thumbup

But I'd really like to hear Nels' treatment on some others, like I Thought I Held You. Not in this lifetime I guess.

Werd. I definitely appreciate it's rawness though. I was in a shitty mood the other day and was perked up when I heard "Box Full of Letters" on 105.3 the Peak (Killington, VT).
