JT's songs that remind you of Lennon

Recommended Posts

Whether it's lyrically, musically, slightly sappy homages to his wife, whatever...it's been often said that Tweedy has a latent Lennon streak in him.

What songs do you hear that in, and why?

I hear it on Hate It Here, not the chorus but definitely the verses. On And On And On has a real Lennon vibe as well, I think. I know it's about something very personal to Jeff (his mom's death), but I still hear it....maybe the music more than the lyric, but I think it's both.

What Light is an obvious one as well. Jeez, you'd think SBS is all I listen to!

My Darling, Wishful Thinking, Hate It Here come to mind right away.

As for What Light i'd say that sounds more like something off of The Grateful Deads master peice "American Beatuy" (Cough...RIPPLE...COUGH)

Oh yeah...My Darling, absolutely.

I've read that elsewhere about What Light, but I just don't hear it. I was actually listening to American Beauty yesterday, first time in quite a while. I think it holds up better than a lot of similar stuff from that period.

its the sentiment. You know those songs that give you a warm and fuzzy feeling inside and for the five minutes after you listen to it you feel a little bit more confident in society. And then you look at the news and the feeling fades :stunned

Techincally My Darling is a Jay Bennett song...

To be honest I don't think a lot of songs remind me of Lennon...when I think of Lennon I think of crazy political songs...and Spiders is the only one to me that seems overtly political, but then when it comes to the music it's totally different.

First off "crazy political songs"????? what the fuck are you talking about??????? Lennon wrote politcal songs with a point that for the most part are sadly timeless.

Secondly when you look at it numerically its only a very small portion of his career. Most of John's songs are introspective or for his love of Yoko.

When I think of Lennon I think of political-era Lennon or early, Help-era Lennon (e.g. Ticket to Ride). That's how I based my decisions. Don't have to flip a shit when I voice my opinion, man.

I'm not a fan of writing overly political songs...it's who I am.

Plus I'm more of a George / Paul person.

Venus Stopped the Train definitely reminds me of "Isolation" period Lennon.

That's the one that comes to mind to me right away. Most of the YHF Demos have a real Beatley or Plastic Ono Band-era feel to them. Alone, Nothing Up My Sleeve, Won't Let You Down, early versions of Kamera, Poor Places and Cars Can't Escape.

I didn't flip a shit. sorry if you interpreted it that way. I guess its harder for people see veiw your personality since you've only read my words.

But again I don't think he songs were overly political if anything they just pushed peace. which isnt a very polictical concept as history has proven.

As for you being a george/ paul person.

George is the man.

As for paul...............I can't help you with that.

Lennon wrote his fair share of feel good songs as well, like Watching The Wheels. That's a song that wouldn't be out of place on Sky Blue Sky, I s'pose.

And he wrote some agonizingly painful stuff.. like Cold Turkey. Which probably wouldn't be out of place on YHF. :D

My Darling sounds very Lennonesque fo sho. I guess What Light does too.

American Beauty is just fantastic but I don't hear any similarities with any Dead music in any Wilco music...at all.

Parts of Nothingsevergonnastandinmyway (Again) really resemble Lennon, especially the bell ringing part (A Day In The Life). There are several parts on the Summer Teeth album that remind me of the Sgt. Pepper album. The horns at the end of Pieholden Suite come to mind right away.

although we are talking about jeff tweedy. the instances that you note probably had as much to do with jay bennet as they did jeff.

i'm not sure i can cite any examples of similarities, but i've always thought that wilco was the type of band that could pull off some incredible dead covers. much better than ryan adams. but after hearing tweedy cover ripple and absolutley bash the dead and their fans, i don't think we'll ever get to hear it.

This is hard, because John Lennon was so varied, and such a musical trail-blazer, in some way many musicians sound like him. Lyrically the song Summerteeth screams Lennon to me. Musically I think Heavy Metal Drummer is quite Lennon-esque, but that might be due to how much I associate it with 'Good Day Sunshine' Just because both make me smile the moment I hear the opening chord in much the same manner.
