But people said Jimmy Carter was the antichrist. The interpretation of the Book of Revelation is usually pretty wild and random (not sure how it could be interpreted literally, tree-hugger, as it's clearly metaphoric language). A lot of theologians say that the book describes events that happened later in the first century.

I have NEVER heard the born again Baptist Jimmy Carter describes as the 'antichrist'. Is there some citation you can provide?

ask any right winger :lol

I have heard Carter described in terms relating to his incompetence but never as some sort of subversion of Christianity.

I have read some anectdote about "When I was young, my uncle told me that Jimmy Carter was the antichrist" or that sort of thing. My guess is that all such predictions have been long-since scuttled at this point. I know that he had a lot of support amongst what we now call the Christian right, but my guess is that the people accused of being anti-christs are often Christian and that the accusations involve them being a FAKE Christian (ie Obama).

I stumbled into the comments section of some political blog and even the Hillary supporters there were talking about how cultish they thought the Obama supporters were, how they'd met him and felt "a chill," I think some even threw out the anti-christ bit as a semi-joke (but only semi.)

What I find creepy is the lengths that people will go to smear his name. That and people who put pictures of him in their avatar.

dude..

I have lived here all my freaking life.

I don't 'blame' anything on the south.

You would have to be incredibly insulated not to feel the inherent longing and general self esteem issues of the south.

We are ridiculed in popular culture and media and there is an outsider mentality that pervades our very being.

Ain't about my pistol

Ain't about my boots

Ain't about no northern drives

Ain't about my southern roots

Ain't about my guitars, ain't about my big old amps

"It ain't rained in weeks, but the weather sure feels damp"

Ain't about excuses or alibis

Ain't about no cotton fields or cotton picking lies

Ain't about the races, the crying shame

To the fucking rich man all poor people look the same

Don't get me wrong It just ain't right

May not look strong, but I ain't afraid to fight

If you want to live another day

Stay out the way of the southern thing

Ain't about no hatred better raise a glass

It's a little about some rebels but it ain't about the past

Ain't about no foolish pride, Ain't about no flag

Hate's the only thing that my truck would want to drag

You think I'm dumb, maybe not too bright

You wonder how I sleep at night

Proud of the glory, stare down the shame

Duality of the southern thing

My Great Great Granddad had a hole in his side

He used to tell the story to the family Christmas night

Got shot at Shiloh, thought he'd die alone

From a Yankee bullet, less than thirty miles from home

Ain't no plantations in my family tree

Did NOT believe in slavery, thought that all men should be free

"But, who are these soldiers marching through my land?"

His bride could hear the cannons and she worried about her man

I heard the story as it was passed down

About guts and glory and Rebel stands

Four generations, a whole lot has changed

Robert E. Lee

Martin Luther King

We've come a long way rising from the flame

Stay out the way of the southern thing

That's the part of the south I like. There is a pride from the south that the rest of the country doesn't really understand. I don't believe everyone in the south is a jackass, racist pig. I'm from Florida, which is in the south, but not really The South, but I still see that southerners are looked down on by most of the country, and it isn't right. There is just as much ignorance, racism, and intolerance in the North, it's just hidden a little better. Though I don't actually believe there is a ton of institutionalized racism in either part of the country, for the most part. In pockets, sure.

The part I don't like is when they do the Chili Cook Off (huge country music/southern pride deal) right next to my house and I walk past with another hispanic friend and some jackass flying a confederate flag asks us "what the hell we are doing" near there. I understand the flag is part of the culture, or whatever, but there's a reason it has such a stigma, and it's for people like that asshole.

What the fuck are you talking about? They don't have to be loyal to anyone but themselves. Stop identifying yourself by your political party. Loyalty shouldn't mean anything in politics.

Hey IRDB, hypothetical:

What on earth would you do if republican changed his or her party affiliation to democrat, went on to win the nomination, but otherwise, did not change his or her political views?

Well, there is certainly some south-bashing on here, but I didn't think Cornbread Chow's comment was.

WTF?!!

Chow?

It's sad when it becomes refreshing to hear someone who isn't just a partisan hack. Someone who actually thinks about the reasons why they support someone. The fact that he says "I may vote for McCain" indicates to me that he actually has a working brain. There are 8 months to the election. I can't imagine how people have unequivocally made their minds up about this.

Well, I know McCain well enough to tell you I won't vote for him. I wouldn't vote for any of the GOP candidates.....at least not the batch that came out this year.

I honestly don't know how people remain so undecided for so long......it's not like we are really going to hear anything new over the next few months. Most of these guys have been in the running for coming up on a year. I can't imagine having any radical shifts in my thinking that I would end up voting with the GOP.

The only reason I wouldn't vote Dem this year is if Hillary is nominated because the DNC decides to seat the delegates from FL and MI - pushing her over the mark. The other candidates respected the national party's wishes and took their names off the ballots. She won them and now she wants them. If that happens, it's fraud, and I will go Green and vote for Cynthia McKinney. If Hillary wins fair and square, I will vote for her - begrudgingly.
