Phil Collins throwing in the towel?

Recommended Posts

Collins is a fantastic drummer. I hope he doesn't give that up, but I won't be too sad if he stops singing stuff.

i'd agree with this

In honor of his retirement I plan on putting his first solo album in the old CD player later today. I still love that one. He went steadily downhill after that, but at least he knows when to call it a day. (Yeah, I'm looking at you Rolling Stones.)

I like Genesis, both Gabriel-era and what followed, up until about the Genesis "Genesis" album, more than it is probably cool to admit around here.

i'd agree with this

And a buddy of mine swears up and down that "Against All Odds" would make a great punk song. I say, "meh."

Remember when we used to hear warnings about dangerous PCB levels? I always assumed they were talking about too much Phil Collins Band on the radio. :rolleyes

I keed though. Top-flight drummer. Just not too crazy about him being a frontman.

Can't say i'm to surprised or upset. I used belong to a message board called The Dylan Pool where his name would come up censored.

I never appreciated him until this summer when I drove across the country, I listened to an episode of This American Life where he was interviewed about writing love songs and something clicked. It was a really good episode.

saw genesis 20 or so times (and brand x once, big robin lumley fan) and, yeah, collins was a phenomenal drummer

but also at one point he really was an incredible singer

listen to phil sing afterglow circa the 1978-1980 tours

Afterglow :wub What a beautiful song. The tour with Bruford/CT ("Seconds Out") was really fine imo.

Weird, we also heard that on a road trip. Same deal, I'm coming to terms with all this music I thought was so square when it was popular.

Abacab :worship

After this record, Phil's success steadily increased to the point I just couldn't stomach him any longer.

I like "In The Air Tonight" too, but could probably live without the rest.

I wasn't even aware they had reunited. :hmm

I don't care what you say

I never played the same games you play

I'm at the end of my rope

So get out of my way

Let me by

I got better things to do with my time

I don't care anymore

Found that man reported missing,

He wandered in his home.

It don't seem to bad if you consider

Just what he's been through.

It seems he met up with a gang of thieves

Who mistook him for a man of means.

They locked him up, then found he had no money,

And so they let him go again.

Now he's back at home and happy

Just to see the kids.

I wish that I could really tell you

All the things that happen to me

And all that I have seen:

A world full of people, their hearts full of joy,

Cities of light with no fear of war,

And thousands of creatures with happier lives,

And dreams of a future with meaning and no need to hide.
