What's the update sheet?

22-04-09-The '7 Worlds Collide II' CD release is expected out around mid year. It may be a single CD, a double CD-or both!!! International fanclub members will be able to obtain copies via the club-so you won't miss out. A rough track listing will be in the May update sheet.

What Could Have Been (Jeff Tweedy)

Aha, that's the title I couldn't remember!

Thanks for the track titles. I'm so excited for this. I heard the live versions of some of these and really liked them. "Hazel Black" is damned catchy.

Hazel Black was one of my favorites too. Also loved Phil Selways Ties that bind us and Reptime, but due to mis-hearing I thought it was Reptile. Reptile didn't make much sense, but I don't know what RepTime is so I can't say its better. So many songs to choose from that didn't get an airing at the concerts. I thought they might have changed more of them night to night. Don McGlashen nearly put me in a coma.

Ok, here are the facts:

1) I've been listening to Neil Finn for over 20 years. Not that you need to care about that.

2) Some of this album was recorded in Roundhead Studios, Neil's studio in Auckland.

3) Most of Wilco went to New Zealand to be involved with the second 7 Worlds Collide project (Nels and Mikael weren't there)

4) They did 3 nights of live performances in Auckland at the Powerstation with the whole 7 Worlds Collide crew, including KT Tunstall, Bic Runga, Don McGlashan, Johnny Marr, Ed O'Brian, Liam Finn, and more.

5) Spencer Tweedy had an interesting time (based on his blog posts)

6) New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, and has its longest day on December 21st, or thereabouts, so it was sunny and nice, while most of us were in winter

7) Neil Finn has some very interesting custom made guitars

8) Oxfam will benefit from proceeds when the recordings of this are finally officially released

9) Neil invited Jeff and family and band to spend the holidays in New Zealand helping him with this project

10) I love W(TA)

Here are my suppositions:

1) The situation was right to get in the studio and record much of W(TA)

2) Jeff enjoyed checking out Neil's custom guitars and played some of them on the album

3) Jeff listened with a new focus to the Crowded House, Split Enz, and Neil solo music while spending 20 hours flying to NZ

4) Most of ViaChicago participants have never listened to much Crowded House, Split Enz, or Neil (that's intended as encouragement)

Ah, but many of us have. :) I was lucky enough to see Split Enz in Wellington last year, which was really fun.

I'm looking forward to the output from the 7WC sessions very much, and hope that someone in NZ tapes the 1-hour behind-the-scenes documentary airing later this month so the rest of us can see it.

I have to say, I appreciate how hard it is to start a new thread around this place. Thanks for keeping it organized moderators, but I'm glad this subject is back up top.

Yep, NZ TV and "good stuff" are usually mutually exclusive, however....

If anyone is interested in seeing this doco I'd suggest trying the on-demand section of the TVNZ website (www.tvnz.co.nz), as they seem to make most of their programming available to view there after it has screened (though not sure whether this is available outside NZ or not).

If the doco isn't there you can always check out some of our "quaint" local shows (and you thought the Flight of the Conchords guys were kidding didn't you!)

May 24 is a Sunday, not Monday.

Just checked TVNZ website and yep, it's on Sunday night.

Will try to record, and post any Wilco-related clips on YT.

I thought that the 7 Worlds doco was pretty sweet. Plenty of Tweedy action:

- Watch Jeff & family arrive at airport!

- Be astounded by spectacular scenery as Jeff walks at Piha beach!

- See Tweedy kids paint self portraits!

- Be amused when Johnny Marr beats Jeff with a cucumber!

Plenty of mutual appreciation-type interviews (Wilco are great! Neil Finn is great! KT Tunstall is great! etc). So this is no high-drama rock ‘n roll clash of egos - the closest we got was a contrived practical joke with Marr stealing Tweedy’s 12-sting Telecaster - but it was good fun and in keeping with the spirit of things. That was the point. This was a group of musicians, and, most importantly, their families, who genuinely enjoyed each other’s company, getting together and having a great summer holiday (and made a record, and did some gigs while they were at it). It was just really nice.

I enjoyed the insight into the creative process stuff – I really liked seeing them discussing and developing the songs – “how about staying on the G for three bars” - that sort of thing. There was a good scene with Bic Runga working up one of her songs with Pat, Glenn and John.

It was great, really. Hopefully it will be bundled as a DVD with the album.

Interestingly they said that all publishing rights and revenue for the songs have been gifted to Oxfam. I wonder if Oxfam will get a double hit from “You never know” with it appearing on both the 7 Worlds record, AND “Wilco (the album”)….?

Your man in NZ.
