Wilco involved with Neil Finn project with Radiohead/Johnny Marr etc

Recommended Posts

I'm a studio engineer and producer at Radio New Zealand and have known Neil Finn for many years. Have done a bit of work at his Roundhead Studios at various times but had no direct involvement in the recording of The Sun Came Out. However, my partner and I are keen Wilco fans so we attended all three 7 Worlds Collide concerts in Auckland this year - up the front every night.

Because Neil had commitments overseas in August, we pre-recorded our interview a month ago. Lucky me - I got to hear the album early. :music

i can wait!

I agree, that’s not that far away – 9 months. Most of those months are summer/holiday months too, and we all know that they fly by pretty quickly.

Geez, you wouldn’t want to get anyone pregnant about now. Imagine that, in 9 months time your life-partner starts going into labour and you have to choose between accompanying her to the hospital or going to the Wilco gig. Man, that’d be a tough call.

I have the television episode now. Many thanks to Rob Lake for getting that to me. Loved the short bit with Rhys Darby talking about flying to NZ on the same plane as Wilco. Great stuff all around. I'll try to post a vine or something in the next day.

I saw the 7 Worlds Collide show in Los Angeles on Sunday. It was a loose, fun evening: Neil, Elroy, KT, Bic, Lisa Germano, and Jon Brion jumping from instrument to instrument and playing a nice selection of songs from the upcoming album (plus a few others.) Last night's Neil solo show (with Jon and Elroy) included another familiar face during one song. Jon has been experimenting with video during his shows, syncing up and looping clips to accompany some of the music on stage. "Private Universe" on Monday featured videos of Nels Cline and Eric Clapton.

The website is great - really anticipating the cd release...

If anyone wants to do themselves a favour, be sure to look deeply into the Augie March discography for more great songs from Glenn Richards (who was involed in 7WC..) and co... they are one of my favourite australian bands, without doubt.

Any of the first three records in their disco are worth plucking straight ioff, but best to start at no 1.. Sunset Studies.

Id love to hear what you all think of it, as theyre one of those bands that ive only really listened to in my own personal space and time.

... luke.

Whoa. That would've been something. Private Universe is one Neil's best songs.

Get any photos?

Time to dial up "Together Alone" on the iPod, I think.....

Glenn supported wilco on their 2007 Oz tour and that was the first i've their stuff - pretty good for a support act!

I wish. We were in prime photo position, but cameras (and other electronic devices) are strictly forbidden at Largo.

The Sun Came Out is available to purchase now as a download from play.com. It's missing the two KT Tunstall-related songs, which for some reason aren't available until next week. If you're not in Europe, you can circumvent the European-only download by entering your complete address, and just keeping the country to "UK". My credit card was initially declined for the incorrect country in the address (I'm in the US), but a call to my credit card company sorted it out and they put it through.

It sounds good. They seem to have captured the feeling of the live performance, for anyone who has managed to hear the recording of one of the Auckland shows from January.

To my ears, the version of You Never Know on The Sun Came Out is identical to the version on W(TA). If there are subtle differences, my ears can't pick them up.

The Jeff Tweedy song What Could Have Been really stands out for me.

Maybe I'm the only one here who's heard this so far? (Yes, I'm a nut to have gone through the trouble to get this so soon.)

After listening to this about 10 times now, a question and a couple of comments:

Have John Stirratt or Pat Sansone ever sung on any Wilco recordings? I'm liking the sound of both of their voices on this album. Their songs are very nice. There's also a very cool percussion-only track with Glenn Kotche and Phil Selway.

I said in my earlier post that the version of You Never Know on this album is identical to that on W(TA). That is not in fact the case. Someone elsewhere pointed out to me, and my ears have confirmed upon close listening, that there is more instrumentation in the mix on The Sun Came Out (fuzzy guitar, Wurlitzer - both credited to Neil Finn). They're subtle differences (it's still the same take of the song), but they really flesh out the song and I think I prefer this version to the one on W(TA).

Even after 10 listens, I still think the Jeff Tweedy song What Could Have Been is the best thing on here. Followed closely by Lisa Germano's Reptile.

Looking forward to others' thoughts on this album - Wilco-related or not. :)

I'm holding out for the physical article, and don't want to pay for it twice ... so I haven't heard the full album yet. I did see some songs live in California a week ago, though, and I have the Auckland Night 3 recording. I heard the full "What Could Have Been" back in April, but that doesn't help much now. I enjoyed reading your thoughts about the album, though - hopefully more people will chime in after the official releases in various countries.

Pat Sansone and John Stirratt sing harmonies on a lot of Wilco songs, but the only Wilco song on which Jeff doesn't sing lead is John's "It's Just That Simple," from 1995's A.M. For more from both John and Pat, you can check out The Autumn Defense.
