You want to know why Starbucks needs to close some stores? Because these three stores:

#7515 400 Madison Ave

#11692 46th and Fifth Ave

#11737 Madison and 44th

are within two freaking square blocks of each other. And there are three others that I can think of in the same 2 block radius. SIX in total!!!

the washington post did an interesting piece on starbucks vs. local coffee shops. its premise was that one would think the local guys are really hurting if starbucks is hurting, but what the post found was that a lot of local shops have seen an increase in business instead of a decrease. one coffee shop is in negotiations to get an abandoned starbucks location even. it is all so fascinating. i never did quite understand 1) how a company could survive with 3 stores next to each other 2) that it was financially viable to build starbucks with drive throughs off of the interstate. 3) why their coffee always tastes burnt.

I am one of those people who always frequents Starbucks while on the interstate....it's like an oasis of coffee chocolatey goodness. I also hit up the local drive thru pretty frequently. Then again, I am addicted.

I looked at that the other day. Only one store in my entire state is closing.

Yeah me too. None in my general area but there are too many in the Greenville area. I'm shocked to see that there aren't more closing.

Interestingly enough, not only is the Starbucks near my house NOT closing, another one is opening even closer.

Go figure.

We are losing one each at the Gallerias in Poughkeepsie and Middletown. It will have no impact on anything, I predict.

Yeah, the two in SF that are closing are the two in the big malls downtown (which are just two blocks from each other).

There are plenty here that remind me of that scene in Best in Show where Parker Posey's character is explaining to the therapist how she met her husband: "We met at Starbucks. Not at the same Starbucks but we saw each other at different Starbucks across the street from each other. "

I'm reading the quotes online, and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy that scene:

Hamilton Swan: I remember what I was drinking when I met you. It was a grande espresso.

Meg Swan: That's right. And I thought that was really sexy.

Hamilton Swan: I'm now a big old chai tea latte soy milk kind of guy.

Meg Swan: Mmm. Soy. Because of the lactose. You're lactose intolerant now.

I love that bit! When I was interviewing for my current job, it was at a Starbucks in dupont circle, my now boss and i had to clarify the one at the top of the circle not the bottom of the circle. I mentioned the Best in Show bit. Turns out, that's one of my boss' favorite movies. I got the job (not really because of the starbucks bit though).

We have a few closing near my work but luckily not the brand new one on the corner closest to work...thank heavens...we all go there before our crack of dawn meetings that they hold every so often.

3) why their coffee always tastes burnt.

Profit. They keep cheaper quality beans, roast the dog piss out of them to gain a 'uniform' product and market 'dark' coffee as 'good' coffee. People bought it and continue to buy it.

I do appreciate while being on road trip, having the ability to get decent coffee instead of watery gas station swill. Other than that, whatever.

Currently reading a book about rational choice. It mentions Starbucks desserts. No one eats them. They are there for leveraging $4 drinks. Interesting. I've never bought one. Does anyone eat those sugar bricks?

it's obviously a matter of taste. Starbucks coffee is known as being bitter. To me, bitter is good. As a result, I like Starbucks coffee.

I like Caribou's dark roast. It has a bitter edge, which I like, without tasting like burning.

And no, I don't think I've ever seen anybody buy the desserts at Starbucks. The occasional muffin or scone, sure, but most of that stuff? No way.

It would interesting to see my blind taste test w/ charbucks beans and some good beans that weren't roasted beyond their flavor threshhold.

Look at how many coffee peddlers have 'dark roast' and even gas stations. It is a marketing game to sell substandard beans. To each his own. Merely pointing out the gimmick to earn more profit.
