John Smith
All this phony outrage ("Lipstick on a pig") on the part of Republicans is really pissing me off. It's nice to see Obama fighting back and calling it bullshit. My personal opinion on this "lipstick" outrage is that it is a smoke screen to cover the offensive ad mccains group launched today claiming Obama wants to teach very young children about sex. The feigned outrage will cover the outrage over the new McCain ad, tit for tat or balance as they say. Only this time it is all coming from the McCain camp. I haven't seen the ad but I've read that it appears that all the children in it are white, So some are claiming racial on this one. It just goes to show how low of a sleazebag McCain is becoming when he takes a program to teach kids abotu how to avoid becoming the victim of a sexual preadator and turniing it into "Dirty old man Obama wants yoru kids to learn graphic details about sex" Afterall what is scarrier to white people than an uppity black man talking sex with their children? Nothig is scarier than that where I live...farm country middle america.

It's actually a comprehensive sex education bill that encompasses all grades K-12 and discusses all aspects of sex, including consequences, contraception, abstinence, harassment, etc. It is more than just a program to teach kids about sexual predators. The second item refers to "age and developmentally appropriate" education. Who determines that? And you had to go racial, didn't you, with the inane comment about scary, uppity black men. The part targeted at the smaller children is the part mccain is exploiting. That part of the program is not a sexually explicit "how to" program as the mccain camp is portraying it. Of course because no one in the mccain camp would go racial, only me. I'm the only one in the country who would see something like that as racially divisive. Those squeeky clean rovianns runnign mccains camp would never ever use any imagry that could be construed as being racially devisive. I guess mccain gets my vote since he has turned into such an upstanding guy looking only to bring chhange to washington.

LouieB
It is still 50 some days until the election, but I feel like I already need to get used to the McCain presidency and hope for a Hillary Clinton run in 2012. I know it ain't over yet, but somehow I have this sinking feeling that the Obama campaign has been bested (and swift boated) once again by the GOP and that we have to live through this some bad dream, with Sarah Palin being this close to becoming the first female president. LouieB
you're smart, unfortunately. Not really sure what this means...at the moment I feel like a depressive.... I don't believe the daily polling and I know Barak still has a good shot at this, but clearly he peaked early due to the pressures of the endless primary season. (Has anyone else noticed how grey he is these days???) He had better be in tip top form for the debates. LouieB

Beltmann
Apart from the convention, the Obama campaign has seemed lost and off-message for weeks now, and I think they are paying the price in the daily tracking polls.

And I find your feigned outrage to be completly bogus. It's OK to pretend that this is not a strategy when republican strategists freely admit that they use the southern strategy, and when Rove used racial attacks against McCain in 2000, and that rove's boys are running McCains show now. Nope look the other way and deny deny deny. Well, that's why youare voting for Obama, isn't it? Yep that's it I'm voting for him because he's black and so am I. Never mind the last eight years of republican ruin in washington, their steallar record of ruiniing the country has never crossed my mind. That has nothing to do with how I am voting. Not a thing at all. I'm simply voting for a black man because he's black. So don't count the vote, send your complaint to the FEC... kwall
so you think it's ok to challenge someone noticing racism only if that person isn't a republican?if their "noticing" consists merely of noting that an ad has only white children in it, yes. but it has nothing to do with their party affiliation. LouieBYeah. Obama really needs to get back on offense, with something as reverberatory as his speech about racism. Failing that, he is cooked. I don't know if Hillary would be faring any better at this point, but she is the only one who approaches the GOP in political skills.

I just don't think there is anything to be gained by inserting race into an issue that has nothing to do with race. And why use this "southern strategy" of "what is scarrier to white people than an uppity black man talking sex with their children?" in non-Southern states?
MattZ
Apart from the convention, the Obama campaign has seemed lost and off-message for weeks now, and I think they are paying the price in the daily tracking polls. I agree and I don't know why they have been so lost. It feels like they are afraid to go on the attack for fear of how it plays. I can't help but think that McCain/Palin has become a teflon ticket. Obama just seems tentative, and maybe it's because he is afraid that anything he does will be re-characterized and turned into the story (attack a war hero or pick on a woman?). It's still early, though. Seems like a lot of folks I know are jumping ship. Or at least reaching for their life preservers. Obama has proven, to this point, to be the best politician of my lifetime. He is smart enough to figure this out.

LouieBit meant only that i fear your perception is correct -- from one current depressive to another. there's a good chance, though, that the situation will change drastically between now and november 4. obama may get tougher in order to respond to dirty politics, and mccain and palin may sink like stones once the sparkles fall off. anything can happen.
