myboyblue
I just started messing with the new Genius feature this week and it's pretty awesome for catching a mood, etc. For those unaware, it's essentially putting together a playlist from your music library based on the song that you select. I'm having issues with a few artists for some reason but I'm assuming they'll fix this. Anyone tried this yet?
Spawn's dad
big brother is watching. when the men in black rappel in through your windows don't come a crying.
Gobias Industries
For all intents and purposes, as solely an album listener I don't think the Genius is very genius, if you catch my drift.

OOO
It's worked very well for me so far, but like Spawn's dad said, you are sending a record of the entire contents of your library to Apple's servers, albeit anonymously (so they say).

Duck-Billed Catechist
I don't understand how to use it. I made one playlist with it and couldn't get it to make another one. It just kept trying to sell me songs.
OOO
what would they possibly do with it? Well I'm almost 100% certain they have no interest in doing anything with it, and theres not much they could do with it, but if they really tried... For example, I have lots of my original songs in my iTunes Library, including rough cuts and stuff i never released. If someone looked through my library, they could figure out what my name is. Furthermore, I have songs in my library that I didnt pay for. Maybe they are labeled slightly incorrectly or something which might tips someone off that they were downloaded not from the iTunes music store. So, in theory apple could send my info to the RIAA or something. However, I don't have a tin foil hat and I'm not worried about it.

jenbobblehead
I am a fan of Party Shuffle, which I finally started using at the office this week.
KevinG
The Genius is either hit or miss for me. I would say 60% hit and 40% miss. I'd be interested in the algorithm they used to come up with the Genius playlists.
CortezTheKiller
The new format seems like a ploy to quell all the complaints that iTunes is killing the album. To get to the individual songs in your library you need to double-click the album artwork.
DAngerer09
To get to the individual songs in your library you need to double-click the album artwork. i thought that at first too, but you can change it back to the old format really easily. Top right, it says "view" and there are 3 different options.

MrRain422
It's okay. I'm not overly impressed but it does what it says it will do.
dagwave
this thread made me curious, but i agree, its all about the SELL
Oweihops
I think it has potential, but it's not all that genius. It's just like Amazon recommends, with lots of redundancy, especially since it doesn't pick up on a lot of more obscure music. It's ultra-repetitive.
myboyblue
this thread made me curious, but i agree, its all about the SELL It hasn't tried to sell me a thing yet. I've used it to generate about 10 different genius playlists and 98% of each of them has been dead-on in regards to mood, music type, etc.
mjpuczko
i haven't used it yet because when i installed itunes8 on my xp pro pc at work, it took about 25 minutes to install & i got so pissed off. also, it's now not tracking my last played tracks on my iPod but itunes 7 at home is. pile of shit. KevinG
I think people are confused, there is a part of the Genius that goes to the iTMS and recommends music to buy, which is pretty much crap. Then there is a Genius playlist button, which when you click a song it goes through and creates a playlist based on that song. I have found the songs are pretty close, and then sometimes not. For some reason the Genius seems pretty confused by Ryan Adams. And I guess who isn't.

bigshoulders
I've used it to generate about 10 different genius playlists and 98% of each of them has been dead-on in regards to mood, music type, etc. It's been pretty spot-on for me too. I have a rather large library, and oftentimes get stuck in a music "rut" if you will, listening only to a certain band, or album, or what have you. The genius factor for me is that it juxtaposes songs that, for whatever reason, simply haven't been played for a while. It's kind of refreshing. Kevin
SarahC
it's a neat function, but i don't have a huge library so it gets repetitive. i am confused by party shuffle and have never really used it. is it just a random selection of songs ?
