Five Wilco songs you can't stand to listen to.......

Recommended Posts

I don't know what I was insinuating...I tend to be pretty transparent in what I say.

It's only a shitting match if you make it one.

It's so easy to appreciate that song...doesn't the message of it appeal to you?

A less mentally ill person than I would probably let this drop...

I don't like a song that features some nice platitudes? And your point is WHAT? I don't appreciate the message. Guess I am overreacting a bit due to the "You can't be a Wilco fan if you don't agree with the politics" shit that was floating around on another thread. The insularity and close mindedness of this board really frustrates me. All so smug and condescending.

I am legion. I am complicated. I like Chocolate AND Vanilla. The minute we start having to defend our tastes for music based on a byzantine system of ideological guidelines...

My five:

  • Kingpin -- to me, this is the worst song in the Wilco canon
  • Woodgrain
  • Spiders (Kidsmoke) -- too long, and not enough happening, though this song works much better live
  • Less Than You Think -- I don't have the patience to sit through the drone
  • What Light

Pick Up the Change

What's the World Got in Store

Was I In Your Dreams?

The Late Greats

Shake it Off

basically that's it. I don't even hate most of those...those are just the wilco songs that bug me on some level. They're not even the worst or weakest wilco songs, they're just songs that have something about them that rub me the wrong way. For example, I find The Late Greats kind of middling. Situating it after one of Wilco's most beautifully sad songs just rubs me the wrong way. I like What's the World Got in Store musically but the intro is just complete cheese to the 40th power.

I always have a slight biased against Being There in general; my first Wilco record was summerteeth, and my second was YHF. Going from those where Tweedy had developed his poetic abilities to an album that I basically saw as Exile on Main Street minus the swagger was really difficult. I recognize Being There's greatness, but in general it'll never be a fav, nor will most of it's songs.

Damnit, I wasn't asking you to defend anything, and I CAN recognize that other people like different things.

Is it a crime to want to know why? Don't put me in a group with those people in that other thread...I don't even know about that shit. I don't read EVERYTHING that is said on this board.

Lay the fuck off.

There are a number of songs that I just skip, simple harmless tunes that I just don't take a hankerin' to - a lot of A.M. to be specific ...

I really tried, but I couldn't find any songs that "I can't stand to listen to" - there are many I find weak, but sometimes I enjoy the music enough to overlook the crap lyrics (Outtasite Outta Mind, Why Would You Wanna Live) or the lyrics are poignant enough to overlook the weak music (Leave Me Like You Found Me, Radio Cure). I've always been album-oriented, so I often just listen to the entire thing.

Having said that, some songs have been redeemed by their live incarnations (Kingpin, Shake It Off). There just hasn't been a moment where I've been bored at a Wilco concert. Honestly though, I listen to live Wilco, live UT, and live Tweedy much more than I listen to their proper albums. That may also be a reason for my listening style. I don't skip over live tracks. I like to hear the entire concert from start to finish.

Hey, I like to listen to proper Bob Dylan albums, even the train wrecks. I love them all. I won't say they're all classics, or all good, but I love them all. Sometimes a bad Dylan album is just what the doctor ordered. Guess I wouldn't be a good music critic ... (bad films on the other hand are painful ... I'll stop them the moment I've given up)

I'm amazed by some of these selections.

Less Than You Think......everybody skips the drone part so that doesnt count, but if people are discounting the beginning of the song i'm dumbfounded

Being There...? really? i think its their best album

Radio Cure? " lyrics are poignant enough to overlook the weak music (Leave Me Like You Found Me, Radio Cure)" i actually think there is a lot to radio cure, i love turning up the stereo at the beginning. I think their are a ton of subtle layers here that make this song great

I agree. Radio Cure is one of the most amazing things they've done musically, or at least sonically.

Yeah, I love "Radio Cure."

I included "Less Than You Think" on my list solely because of the drone. The musical portion of that song is good. That I included it at all merely speaks to how strong I believe the Wilco catalog is, overall -- I was struggling to come up with five, so the drone made the list.

I don't have kids either; I just think it's a beautifully structured song.

I don't see how it's any cornier than a number of early Wilco lyrics.

It is a beautifully structured song, and it's ok to get a little cornie with lyrics sometimes.. Especially with a song like My Darling..

Me too... :(

That's too bad... Being There is probably my favorite Wilco record...

My five songs I can't stand to hear.. Doesn't mean they aren't great songs, just over played:

Shot In The Arm

Heavy Metal Drummer

I'm The Man Who Loves You

Handshake Drugs

Jesus Etc.

At one time, every single one of these songs were my favorite Wilco tunes.. They are just played out for me now..

Couldn't have said it better myself

The last 12 minutes of Less Than You Think

Didn't like Hoodoo Voodoo until this year when they finished both concerts I went to with it. It's awesome live, but I'll probably still skip over the recorded version. It ain't the same as Pat and Nels duking it out on stage.

Leave Me Like You Found Me

The last couple of songs on A.M. are alright songs, but they needed a little more work (as Jeff admits to being in a rush to get the thing out asap), so I generally lose interest after Dash 7.

Outtamind ~ Love Outtasite version, though!

I like it.

Of the songs I really "can't stand to listen to" Only 1 comes to mind now: "My Darling." And I'm no Jay Bennett hater, either... just don't like the song.

Kevin

I'd like My Darling better if a woman or a baritone who can sing well would cover it. This is not a song for Jeff and Bennett has the right kind of voice, but he's more suited for backup vocals than lead. Might make a good slow R&B song.

I also have to admit, I listen to the drone on Less Than You Think rather than fast forwarding more often than not. It's a good drone and there's actually a lot happening sonically if you listen. I will say, too, that the drone was phenomenal at the residency.
