Sir Stewart
But in the last analysis, one comes back to the forbidden issue of ethnicity. For example, would Powell have endorsed Hillary, had she won the nomination? After all, her views on Iraq
John Smith
You know I am beginning to think that Buchanan is only for McCain because of race. Ditto for Limbaugh, ORiley, Hannity, and Joe the plumber. That has to be it no other reason for them to pull for McCain. BTW the above is a joke as is the Buchanan article and all the punditry who willingly choose to ignore what Powell has said and written about his endorsement.
sweetheart-mine
buchanan is way off the mark. he basically chose one thing -- an aside -- out of a substantial and multi-faceted endorsement and then warped it beyond all recognition, conveniently leaving out the meat of powell's reasoning and decision. makes buchanan look like a simpleton, but if he's happy with that, well, go for it, pat. austrya
I think Colin Powell gave a lot of reasons why he was voting for Obama and he gave a lot of reasons why he was unhappy with McCain. I don't remember Powell himself mentioning race as a factor.

bobbob1313
this is a lot of crap. Republicans feel screwed over - but you know what? they screwed him over when Bush and Rumsfeld blew smoke up his ass about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, encouraging him to make a case for war in Iraq. a pile of lies.I think it's kind of funny how Powell has been beatified by democrats. He was at the forefront of the campaign to go into Iraq, and yet nobody holds him accountable like they do everyone else. It's just weird how he's the only person related to the administration who has been given the benefit of the doubt. Everyone else are liars, he was just mislead.

I don't remember Powell himself mentioning race as a factor. We'll never know how much of a factor race was for Powell's decision, but anyone who thinks it had ZERO to do with it is kidding themselves. I actually don't have a problem with Powell having race as one of his reasons. Hell, if I was African-American, I'd probably be very tempted to vote for Obama. Considering where blacks once stood in this country, I can totally understand any African-American wanting to put in someone of their skin color. I thought the best point in Buchanan's article was Powell questioning the Supreme Court appointees. That seems baffling to me.

I suppose this is where you tell me that by reading the written word, I've lost context and don't appreciate the passion and conviction displayed in the actual speech. I still think he acted in his own best interest to some extent.

I blame Powell and have been pretty vocal about it on here. But I dont blame him for being misled whereas everyone else was a "liar." I blame him for having doubts at the time and not standing up and vocalizing them at the time. He allowed himself to be steamrolled and then told everyone about his doubts after the fact. He allowed himself to be a pawn at the UN. He should have fallen on his sword if he was boxed in and thought he couldn't stop the process.

"beatified" -- another version of the stupid "messiah" trip. you might want to rethink buying into that stuff, since it's crap. i hold powell accountable for his role in the iraq invasion, absolutely. he was mislead, but i also thought he was cowardly in how he dealt with it in public (or, more to the point, didn't). he should have renounced the thing as soon as he found out he'd been made a fool's messenger, and loudly. he didn't. to me it's the biggest blemish on his record, and it's a biggie. given the rest of his record, however, why would an obama supporter be unhappy about his well thought out and articulated endorsement of obama? I suppose this is where you tell me that by reading the written word, I've lost context and don't appreciate the passion and conviction displayed in the actual speech. i don't have to tell you. you know it and said it yourself. I've long held that Powell has gotten off easy on Iraq, though the blame for his performance usually gets pushed off to Dirty Dick and his manipulation of intelligence.
