I'm looking foward to a thread about how people would rank their favorite wilco albums, anyone wanna get on that!

That's the one I really wanted to start. I hear that Mermaid Ave is only behind Summerteeth by like 2 percentage points. But, there is a margin of error (of 2 points).

on a side note or something that Crazy Horses video is still about the best thing I've ever seen next to most porn.

agreed. you can complain all you want, but any thread that exposes the masses to both the KISS solo albums AND the osmond's 'crazy horses' couldn't be anything further from a waste of time.

Yeah I started a thread a while back about favorite Wilco lyrics and was immediately directed to several threads in the past that discussed the same thing.

Needless to say I don't post here much anymore.

A link to other threads doesn't actually stop a thread though - lack of posts does. If people are interested in getting a thread off the ground, they'll post after the person who posts all the links; if no one is interested, nobody posts afterward.

I still think that starting a new thread asking, 'any news?!' is kinda silly; I just picture someone sitting at their keyboard going, "Say, Jeff did give me those four leaked studio tracks last week - I plumb forgot! Glad that person asked!"

The "linking is jerky"/"thanks for the links!" argument will never die.

People who post links to previous threads are usually doing it for one of two reasons:

1. If a thread is substantially similar to another thread, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have a new one. Sometimes they'll be merged by the moderators, or the new one will be closed, but it can be crazy-making to have multiple threads on one topic. It's just a lot easier to navigate the boards when it's a bit tidier arond here. And if you didn't know about the previous thread, or weren't able to find it using the search feature, then the links are helpful.

2. Sometimes when someone is new to the board, or doesn't post regularly, they don't realize that the topic they're posting about has been discussed before. And lots of times, there is good information in the older threads. In this case, links to the previous threads can be helpful because maybe someone posted information a while back but doesn't post much anymore, or a topic was really hot at the time of the first thread and lots of people posted (this is often the case for things like lyrics; when a new song or album comes out, lots of people want to discuss the lyrics, but you might not get as many responses further down the line).

Either way, the impulse is usually to be helpful, point the poster to more information, keep things in some kind of order, etc. If it feels like you're being shut down when someone posts a link to a previous thread, please try to remember, that's probably not the intent. As Ms. Racer posted above, if people want to talk about a topic, having links to older threads in that topic is not going to stop the conversation.

it can also be crazy-making to attempt to parse a 79-page thread looking for a link or some information.

If you go down to the bottom of the page, when you're in a thread, there's a box over on the left-hand side for searching within the thread.

Also, something along the lines of "there was a link to the whole new album, which won't be released for another six months, somewhere about 20 pages back in this thread, but now I can't find it; could someone please post it again?" usually works.

Nobody's saying that it's 100% verboten to post a thread on a topic that's been discussed before. But if you do that, people are going to post links to the previous threads. Either accept those links as helpful, or ignore them. No big whoop.

This has been good, but it's off topic. Please join me in my new thread where I will ask if any insiders know secrets about the new Wilco record.

I'm probably what would be considered one the insiders so feel free to send me a PM for any details.
