RIP Dickie Betts

Yeah -- made 80. Good on 'em. That last decade has not been great for him - health wise.    Was such a great, great player with a beautiful tone. Songwriting skills were there, too.

Now I am really wishing I would have spent the dough and saw them at the Chicago Theater last summer - of well --- hopefully this year will be their last hurray and they can just release a bunch of archival stuff in the future; I don't see a point of seeing them with other band members at this stage of their career.

I would think they would hang it up - but I could certainly be wrong about that.

It'd be kind of silly to keep going once Derek and Warren leave  Who would they recruit to replace them?   I'm sure there are a lot of players that could do it, but to restart at this point could only be a step down.

Butch said last year on his (now defunct) blog that the end was coming pretty soon.  I hope I'll get to see them this year.   They're actually playing tomorrow night in town for some sort of Gregg Allman all-star honorary show that's being filmed for release, but it sold out instantly and I don't have tickets.

Over on Facebook, someone suggested Devon and Dickey's son Duane playing with the band. That's an interesting idea - but do they have the chops? I am not familiar with Duane's playing, but I think Devon is in a couple of bands now and is more of a front man.

I cannot fathom that the ABB will continue beyond 2014 with a new guitar lineup.  Seems ridiculous to me.  But, I do note that Warren and Derek's announcements were not accompanied by any announcement by the Band that 2014 will be there 45th and final year, so we shall see.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them do some one-off shows occaisionally with Derek and Warren.   I doubt the band is completely over, but I doubt they'll continue to be a band that regularly tours.

I've seen Dickey's son sit in with the Allmans as well as play in Dickey's band. He didn't really stand out. Regardless, can't imagine him going. Dickey would slash his throat.

Devon has been around for a while, and I've never heard anything positive about him. I think he was in Cher's band for a while. Recall an interview with him where he sounded like a gigantic doosh.

I saw Vaylor Trucks once with his band playing some Tony Williams Lifetime songs.  Good player, but probably a little too fusiony to fit in with the Brothers.   Sort of Jimmy Herring-ish...another contender/one-time fill in guitarist who doesn;t really fit their style.

Young Duane Trucks (nephew of Butch and younger brother of Derek) plays drums in the new Todd Snider/Dave Schools/Neil Casal group Hard Working Americans. Caught their first live gig in Boulder last month and the kid can play.

I've had zillions of great concert experiences, but the thrill of being in the Beacon when Clapton came out on stage to play a blistering set with the Allmans may be the pinnacle.  Sad to hear that Warren and Derek are departing, but thankful for the many great evenings in the company of this band.

That's great you have seen some Beacon shows. I only saw the band once - in 1995.

Another quote from Derek:

Trucks is certainly warm to the idea of Betts returning to the stage with the Allman Brothers at some point during the 45th anniversary shows, after which he and Warren Haynes will depart the group. Derek offers, “I think not only for the band and the legacy but for the audience too it would be something nice to tie it up. The whole story of the band is this dysfunctional crazy family and it has been from the beginning. I think that’s one of things that draws people to that music, there’s a humanity about it and I think for it not to go out right would be a shame especially when it’s still tangible. I just think it’s the right sentiment but we’ll see…”

The "Allman Brothers Band" was really over when Dickey left (thrown out).  It has been a tribute band since then.  How can you say you are a band when you lost both lead guitars and the Bass player.  It has been a joke to call them the ABB.  I understand that the replacements are great guitarists but they are different.

I also agree that without new stuff it's tough.

I don't blame them because people keep paying to see them.

For me, it comes down to if the replacements are high calibre enough both technically and artistically to fill the shoes of those they are replacing.  Also, do they show that they have fully understood on a deep level the spirit and all the influences of what made the originals great.  I love the Dickey and Duane Allman lineup and the Dickey and Warren lineups so much, of course, and I also felt that Warren and Derek easily met all of the requirements I personally have for them to be considered more than worthy replacements for Dickey and Duane.  Same for Woody and Oteil replacing Oakley.  I also consider if the remaining original members are playing with enough fire and passion and I think that has been true of Greg, Jaimoe and Butch since Dickey departed, too.  This last lineup of the ABB has consistently been far far better than what I would consider a "tribute" band by my own personal standards.

But the last tour by the Black Crowes in 2013, well, that for me borders on being a "tribute" band with Jackie Greene and Adam McDougal as the sub-par replacements of Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch and Chris Robinson just not bringing it like he used to.

The Allmans having been a "tribute band" over these last many years is so far from my reality I don't even know where to start.  And there's no point trying to convince, or arguing about it.  Plus, if I started I'd spend all day on it and I have work to do.  So, I'll just respectfully disagree and enjoy the  music.

I don't think they are either. They have had a lot of members over the years:

Warren Haynes - guitar, slide guitar, vocals (1989-1997, 2000–present)

Marc Quiñones - drums, percussion, background vocals (1991–present)

Oteil Burbridge - bass, vocals (1997–present)

Derek Trucks - guitar, slide guitar (1999–present)

Duane Allman - guitar, slide guitar (1969-1971; died 1971)

    Dickey Betts - guitar, slide guitar, vocals (1969-1976, 1978-1982, 1986, 1989-2000)

Berry Oakley - bass, vocals (1969-1972; died 1972)

Chuck Leavell - piano, synthesiser, background vocals (1972-1976, 1986)

Lamar Williams - bass, vocals (1972-1976; died 1983)

    Dan Toler - guitar (1978-1982, 1986; died 2013)

    David Goldflies - bass (1978-1982)

David "Frankie" Toler - drums (1980-1982; died 2011)

    Mike Lawler - keyboards (1980-1982)

Allen Woody - bass, background vocals (1989-1997; died 2000)

I think the current lineup has been together longer than any other incarnation of the band, and they've made some new music which is respectable if not as great as some of the classics. Also live they aren't just playing the hits like a tribute band, but trying to create and improvise in the same way the original band did. They do rely a bit too much on playing classic rock covers. There have been lineups with Dickey that have been far inferior to this one. I'd say the current incarnation is their 3rd greatest, behind the original lineup with Duane and Berry, and the 90's lineup with Warren, Dickey, and Woody.

Better or worse is not the criteria for me just that it's just not the same.  It is semantics really anyway, if you enjoy then go for it but for me, I have seen them many times (since around 1985) and I agree the sound is fine now with this lineup but without the original "front line"...no.
