I wish i didn't have to fly back to NY after last nights show. This one was far better, wish i was there. Still have yet to see Via Chicago live, and the show last night was seriously lacking without Spiders. Plus you get Poor Places, Far Far Away, and Side with the Seeds. Best set ive seen in a while.

Great show tonight! Absolutely loved the setlist tonight! I was pumped they played Country Disappeared!

thanks for the fast setlist! what an amazing show, so glad to see them like this -- jeff without his jean jacket!?! at first i thought the venue would be bad, but the band and crowd made it feel like home! third show this summer, and this one, the best (other two were el paso and austin). LOVED THE SETLIST!!!

Wow! Where do I start? The band put on an incredible show, great setlist, you could tell they were really having fun up there. I was with my cousin and our seats were way back in section 107 and for about the first 2 hours of the show our entire section was sitting on their asses and chit-chatting. I was initially going to write a review bashing the crowd for not being into the show but right around the start of ITMWLY everyone jumped to their feet and started getting into it. The band did not let up from that point on and played an awesome show. Highlights: Handshake Drugs, Box Full of Letters, ITMWLY, Spiders, Poor Places, Nothingsevergonna..., Passenger Side, Casino Queen, Outtasite...Pretty much the entire second half. I do however think that this venue was too big for them; either that or I just need to get closer to the stage. The people around us were definitely not into the show and it did detract from it until the band decided to melt our faces off in the second half.

Ageed that the show was great. I was half way between the soundboard and the stage and just rocking out. BUT never felt so underdressed at a Wilco show! omewthing about that scene was notwhat I am used to.. maybe it was a all the daters or the folks all dressed up but kind of a weird vibe for Wilco. Band performed great. Thought there was a weird bit of tension before ITMWLY about the gong, but loved hearing Kamera and Far far away. Tremendous!

Loved this show ! starting with the departure of the norm tour setlist and playing with the fun and abandon of being the last gig on this leg of tour: the flow was easy and they hit on all cylinders!

Definitely a good show, and I think the crowd had more energy tonight.

But I still enjoyed Sunday night more in a lot of ways. Mainly because it was my first Wilco show since the 5 nights at the Riv in Feb 2008, so I was just enjoying every minute.

Overall cannot complain at all, very good show.

Incredible show, so many highlights... Poor Places > Spiders, Can't Stand It, VC, Far Far Away, Nothingsever, Passenger Side, Casino Queen > Outtasite, Kamera, Country Disappeared.

Hummingbird was great, too. I hadn't heard them do that full band in a while and Jeff completely nailed it, down to doing the little Hummingbird jog, with mic swinging in hand, then tossing it 15 feet into the air and catching it with one hand. It was pretty impressive, especially since it really didn't look rehearsed. It kind of captured Jeff and the band's "we can do no wrong" mentality tonight. Indeed, the guys had swagger tonight, no doubt about it.

It is entirely too fucking early.....

Okay, well, clearly Monday was better than Sunday. Sunday was perfectly good, but on Monday due to a half filled house and the off night, the band took more chances and seemed like they had something to prove. Jeff's comment on the fact that this was the first time anyone could have come to see Wilco was funny and true. There were whole hunks of seats open (the balcony was just ridiculous), but mostly I would attribute that not to people not wanting to see Wilco or to the large venue, but the night. Who books a major rock concert on a Monday night. Frankly I don't really care, because the floor while crowed was very comfortable and everyone had a great time.

Needless to say much of the fun was to be had on the street before the show where it was great to get back in touch with old friends and meet a few new ones. A big shout out to everyone. Drive safely...

Everyone one else can talk about the set list, which varied just enough from Sunday to be fine, although early one it looked like a repeat. My impression from having not seen the band in a year an a half (not the traveler some of the rest of you are) is that the dynamics of the band has changed. While Greg Kot mentions Nels extensively in his review of the first night, I think the band is far more balanced than ever before. We have come to expect Nels to be incredible and he still is, but now Pat gets more leads, more fills and is just generally more of a factor in the mix. I am not saying that simply because I was standing on his side, since I usually stand on the Pat and John side. Also Jeff seems to be taking more leads and interesting leads at that. So kudos to Pat and the entire band for really kicking into high gear last night.

(Bull Black Nova reminds me of my old Olive Drab Nova that I owned in my 20s...I guess it is now too late to write a song about iit...)

Anyway back to reality.....which frankly sucks this morning...

Post shower additional thoughts...

Although most of us approached the UIC Pavillion with a bit of trepidation, it actually turned out to be a good venue and a good location and frankly I hope they play there again soon. The not totally selling out was more an issue of dates (why not Friday and Saturday instead of Sunday and Monday???) and the set up gave a nice mix of seats for those who wanted and needed to sit and GA for those wanting to be right up front. Having been in both, and hearing the sound from both, I thought the sound was excellent (not having too high expectations going in..) even in front. Since we arein't going to get Wilco at Schubas and some folks are unhappy with the Auditorium this is a good compromise of venues and far better than the dreaded Aragon which was the initial speculation for these shows. So kudos to Wilco's management for taking a middle road and next time a better night would fill the place to the rafters.

Tortoise was better the second night too. Admittedly these guys are not easy. They play fairly cerebral music, which is a deconstruction of jazz/fusion with some heavy metal overtones (as pointed out by Greg). The lack of vocals makes them harder for straight up rock fans to get into as well. But last night they also stepped up their game and were fun and engaging and I was sorry to see them end quite so soon. I thought they were great opener. There are great similarities between Califone, who are the masters of folk/roots deconstruction and Tortoise, who do similar things with jazz fusion. Also related to these groups is the Sea and Cake, who deconstruct the breezy bossa nova type stuff. Needless to say I am biased about all these groups, since they all come from the same stew pot of Chicago post-rock and are somewwhat inter-related with what Wilco does. (PopTodd of course would chime in here for the now defunct Shrimp Boat and of course the Coctails, late of the Lounge Ax, among others...)(The Aluminum Group, also related to these groups, got a bad reception at the Ottos shows a few years back...) Wilco is certainly the top of the Chicago heap, but these are the guys who inspire Wilco (just my opinion of course.) Jeff Parker alone is an important player. I have seen him pop up with any number of groups including some of his own. He played Jazz Fest this year with what turned out to be a fairly straight ahead quartet (if memory serves). But coming up through the ranks of some AACM bands and transitioning over to these other groups (including Isotope 217) he is an impressive musician in his own right and a friend of Nels. Doug McComb also plays with different groups including the now semi-retired Eleventh Dream Day, perhaps the first of the really important Chicago alternative rock groups (first time I saw them Tim Rutilli played with them.) Chicago is just one big happy musical family.

Okay, off to work.

Agreed...anytime Pat starts marching or doin' his rock poses...I'm happy! See you all in Madison in February!

Yeah, Pat tore through the Box Full of Letters solo like a buzzsaw in a Kleenex factory. ;)

Totally rockin show.Via Chicago into Bull Black Nova set energy the level high and they never came down. Many highlights One Wing was a big surprise for me . The transition from Poor Places to Spiders was a perfect example of what makes Wilco so beautiful and keeps me coming! I've seen Jeff solo acoustic three times in the past year and his shows are truly magical, but last night's show was the loudest, most rockines Wilco show I have ever seen! Thank you boys

In a cab back to my NY apt and can't stop smiling. This was the first time I got to see the band in their transplanted home town, and it was clear to me how lucky they are that Chicago is it. This was my 5th & 6th show this year, and the lack of hipsters and genuine free spirited love displayed was a refreshing change. I love my city, but seeing the boys in Brooklyn can make the purest of heart want to pull a bull black nova on most in attendance. They killed it again and brought me joy - so if that's dad rock, then I've been wrong about the burbs. THANK YOU Chicago. THANK YOU, again, Jeff, John, Michael, Nels, Glenn and Pat - you make a girl not have to miss the innocence for a few hours. (And Poor Places & Passenger Side were just livin the dream and what not!)

Sounds amazing....I was really hoping they would webcast this show. Assuming there were tapers, I'll wait patiently for it to appear on the webs.

Bummed I missed the show -- didn't want to get others around me as sick as I am today :hmm

Will just have to see them in Madison or something. And hopefully a source will appear so I can enjoy it vicariously....
