Wilco -- 16/11/09, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Recommended Posts

Just so this doesn't get more confusing than it already is, since the other Paradiso thread refers to the show there two and a half years ago (even though I know some posts at the end were about tonight's show) and the lengthy webcast live thread in Just A Fan doesn't have the complete setlist, here's exactly what was played at tonight's gig:

Ashes of American Flags

Remember The Mountain Bed

Company In My Back

Bull Black Nova

You Are My Face

IATTBYH>

One Wing

A Shot in the Arm

Side With The Seeds

Deeper Down

Impossible Germany

Passenger Side

Handshake Drugs

Sonny Feeling

Jesus, etc. (crowd singalong)

Can't Stand It

Hate It Here

Theologians

Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

-------------------------

You Never Know

Heavy Metal Drummer

Via Chicago

Poor Places>

Spiders (Kidsmoke)

-------------------------

Monday

Hoodoo Voodoo

If people are so inclined, I guess they can continue to discuss the 2009 show here... :cheers

Quick question about the venue - is it an old church? The pics that went along with the webcast had that kind of vibe to them. An awsome set list (and the webcast sound quality was A+++++++) in a real cool looking venue.

Those who listened to the webcast undoubtedly heard this, but "Handshake Drugs" was dedicated to Zwarte Piet. Yes! (Sinterklaas and the Zwarte Pieten arrived on Sunday in Amsterdam.)

For those not well versed (or at all versed) in Christmas traditions of the Netherlands, like me before this trip, that would be translated as 'Black Piet,' who is a companion of Saint Nicholas. Zwarte Piet is apparently black because of the soot from climbing down chimneys with presents for the children.

Yes, it is kind of weird to see a parade with a Santa Claus figure and bands of black-faced guys running around throwing candy, which happened here the other day. ;)

I liked the Milan setlist with California Stars better.

Actually I'm just bitchy because I had meetings all afternoon and couldn't listen to any of the web cast. :yucky

If you're unfamiliar with this tradition, David Sedaris's "Six to Eight Black Men" would be an excellent primer. Nice that Zwarte Piet could get a shout-out tonight. Any signs of him stuffing children in sacks or pretending to beat them with sticks? "Listen, you're going to want to pack your things..."

Looks like a nice setlist. I can't wait to hear Sonny Feeling again. Has the rainbow SG been making regular appearances?

Jeff? No, not during the show anyway. I didn't notice any of that from the Petes on Sunday either. One was stuffing little cookies into girls' hoods, but that's about as menacing as things got.

I didn't notice the colorful SG in Milan, but it was out in Amsterdam. Also good to see the reappearance of Nels's double-neck guitar for "You Never Know."

Playing "I Must Be High" last night would have been too blatant, right? I think we were only missing "Red-Eyed and Blue" for the more subtle drug references. Nice.

Home for a little while. Back from Amsterdam and still a little bit out of breath. So a short comment while I'm packing for Eindhoven!

In one word: a great, great concert. One of the best I ever saw. Maybe it's also because I feel at home at the Paradiso (3rd time Wilco over there for me).

Ashes ... like in London, great opening, great response from the crowd. The crowd didn't respond that much on "Amsterdam" in Sonny Feeling and not everyone knew the words to "Jesus, Etc." or didn't want to sing along. And yes, there was something wrong at the beginning of "One Wing".

Like someone said about the webcast, never heard the organ that much in Impossible Germany. Handshake Drugs everytime surprises me, great ending and what a feedback, it went on and on.

And great hearing "Passenger Side" for the first time. "Monday" and "Hoodoo Voodoo" rocked the Paradiso. There couldn't have been a better ending and finally (...)no "Wheel" of "Great Lates". I don't know if it's me but everything sounded loud (louder than in Brussels or London).

Some funny remarks from Jeff (and from the crowd -songs about dykes-). Jeff always refers to the pot/drugs or whatever while playing in Amsterdam. B.t.w., it isn't allowed any more to smoke in the Paradiso! But to me it looked if Jeff wasn't in the mood for talking a lot. Nels looked relaxed. He often looked up to the people on the balcony and laughed!

Well, let's see what Eindhoven will bring us tonight. "V.C." for starters and I'm A Wheel" as last song of the year?
