Dude
#1 wasn't a real surprise, either: http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7744-the-top-50-albums-of-2009/
Moss
No Wilco, no Isbell, no Son Volt, screw Pitchfork.
brianjeremy
The top 10 looked pretty decent (except that rap album - I don't listen to rap). I would have liked to have seen Wilco get an HR, but I fully did not expect to see them in the Top 50.
tinnitus photography
of their list, i would agree w/ inclusions (not necessarily placings) of Baroness, Bill Callahan, Dino Jr, and Flaming Lips. that Sunn O))) record was disappointing. no kurt vile listed...that's a crime against humanity. brianjeremy
no kurt vile listed...that's a crime against humanity. Yes, he was. He was listed as an HR.
solace
while i like most of the albums in their top 10, their list (top 10 esp) this year was even more predictable than usual. i guessed all but 1 album correctly (Raekwon)
sureshot
that Sunn O))) record was disappointing. really? i thought it was the best thing they've done.
Guest Speed Racer
their list (top 10 esp) this year was even more predictable than usual. i guessed all but 1 album correctly (Raekwon) I guessed 7 out of 10 in the Top 10, and if I can do it, anyone can. I still don't understand why "Hellhole Ratrace" is supposed to be such a good song. The lyrics are predictable and the music is so boring I...I can't even bother to finish that sentence. The rest of the album is pretty good, but I couldn't believe how awful that song was after all I read about it.
Lodestar
I love Bon Iver, but Blood Bank EP at #26 is ludicrous.

The rest of the album is pretty good, but I couldn't believe how awful that song was after all I read about it. Yeah I had 6 of them picked. They threw their token rap album in, couldn't they find room for Dad rock?

jmacomber68w
How come whenever I read a Pitchfork list, I am either well versed and a fan of a band that made the list, or am completely oblivious to their existence
Sweet Papa Crimbo
How come whenever I read a Pitchfork list, I am either well versed and a fan of a band that made the list, or am completely oblivious to their existence Semi-hipster or Hipster-Lite It could be worse. To me these lists look like they mix in a few bands that they google searched under "Obscure bands to make the oldsters scratch their heads and say WTF!"
Gobias Industries
It's a very conservative list. Maybe Pitchfork has gotten soft. The more likely explanation, though, is that indie went mainstream.
Synthesizer Patel
i predicted all 50, in the correct order.
Cam Jones
Why the hell is Embryonic on that list? That album pissed me off so bad. I lost major cool points for the Flaming Lips after that one.
brianjeremy
It's a very conservative list. Maybe Pitchfork has gotten soft. The more likely explanation, though, is that indie went mainstream. It's business now. It's not just some nerd typing from his parent's basement anymore. People listen to what they say and their voice, like it or not, is very influential. They've definitely tempered their writing style in recent years as a reaction to that. They're not soft: they're a capitalist venture. That's why when people say "fuck pitchfork for yadda-yadda-yadda," it's nearly a laughable posturing at this point. They're as mainstream as Rolling Stone.
Dude
Why the hell is Embryonic on that list? That album pissed me off so bad. I lost major cool points for the Flaming Lips after that one. It's a great, (probably) important, dense record. It probably turned half its listeners away on the first listen, but the same can be said about Kid A, which had scores of detractors when it came out before eventually being considered the top album of the decade. deepseacatfish
Very safe list on their parts. Califone, though is very conspicuously absent. Surprised it didn't get at least an honorable mention.

Orkie
Why the hell is Embryonic on that list? Because it's absolutely awesome and a huge, daring risk which they pull off very well. Also, the vitality on there for a band of their age is fantastic.
dagwave
i predicted all 50, in the correct order. I nailed all the HR's but whiffed on the fifty.
