Turnips
I'd argue that you would have never heard of The National without its lead singer. Love it or hate it, without that baritone vocal I don't think they would be any more interesting than your average indie emo band. and this is coming from a big fan and yes, Billy Corgan's voice is annoying but would you really listen to SP more without him? c'mon
kathyp
These won't win me any popularity points... The Mountain Goats - Yes, John Darnielle is a great songwriter, but I'm not a fan of his thin, whiny vocals Bright EyesSee above And yes, The Hold Steady. He doesn't sing; he barks. Sweet Papa Crimbo
You sure did say it! And so did Sparky Lyle on page 2 of this thread. Then I wholeheartedly agree with Sparky Lyle on this.
jokin' dealer
I'll probably get crushed for both of these but: PavementOld 97's
Wild Frank
RushI'll second that. Geddy's voice has become more palatable as he's got older. Musically they are an amazing band though. Also, the Travelling Wilbury's had a few rubbish singers. Orbison, Dylan, Harrison, Petty and Lynne never really cut it with me!!
Winston Legthigh
I'd listen to New Pornographers more if Newman & Bejar would hand over all singing assignments to Neko.

bigshoulders
I'd listen to New Pornographers more if Newman & Bejar would hand over all singing assignments to Neko.+ 1 Also, I'd give The Decemberists more air time if I could get past that voice. I can't take it for more than a few songs in one sitting.
Atticus
Rush oh hell yes. now, Subdivisions is one of the most kickass songs ever ever, and I wouldn't touch it, but his singing in pretty much everything else is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
lamradio
I find it interesting that people are listing bands where the singer totally makes the band. MMJ, Band Of Horses.. The vocals make them who they are. Especially MMJ.. Without Yim Yames, MMJ wouldn't be so unique..
Guest Speed Racer
But isn't that uniqueness exactly why these people are so divisive? I can't stand Jay Bennett's voice, which is what has kept me away from his solo work. I'll also put down The Decembrists and Arcade Fire, though I think the songwriting quality of both groups also keeps me away. And, like, the instrumentation, arrangements and melodies. And lyrics. Guest Speed Racer
This thread is really dumb. Everybody is missing out on some great music. Everybody misses out on some great music, period. No one hears everything. And I'm sure there's music you don't like, right? And not just because it's objectively terrible? Vocals are a pretty big part of a song with lyrics, and some people just have voices that don't sound good to other people. Indian food is awesome, but if you don't like the way garam masala tastes, it's not "dumb" to not like Indian food.
