Someone please explain why the Rays signed both Damon AND Ramirez. I'm not getting it.

Well, you see there's this concept called saving money when your "fans" don't show up to your games when you win the AL East Pennant.

They pretty much shopped at Filene's Basement this offseason. The GM publicly stated that they wanted to tighten the purse strings after the Rays went out in the playoffs. It's too bad. If you look back, you will see that I was very upset by this (and this is coming from a Red Sox fan). I like young teams that can destroy the elite teams.

Damon can still field, but I think Manny will do the majority of the DH role.

Edit: Also Mike Napoli & Juan Rivera to the Blue Jays in exchange for Vernon Wells.

Both moves combined costs less than $8MM. Basically, the Rays swapped Crawford and Pena for Damon and Ramirez. They're saving about $20MM on two positions, but they aren't exactly the better for it unless the two aging stars put up decent numbers.

The Angels play their cards closer to their vest than anybody. No one heard not even a whisper about the Angels doing anything other than maybe bringing back Vladimir Guerrero, who might be stuck going to Baltimore now.

Also: Straight out of the "No Shit? Really?" Department: Last week Milton Bradley was arrested for suspicion of communicating a threat, a felony, to a woman in L.A. Maybe he's perpetually pissed because his middle name is Obelle.

Have we talked about how bad that Jays-Angels trade seems for the Angels?

The Angels should have also sent along a couple of prospects to the Jays in exchange for about $15-20MM to help pay for Wells. L.A. still has Hunter, Abreu and three of the top OF prosepects in the game, so I don't understand taking on the entire contract. If you going to pay that kind of coin, why not offer it to Crawford and then seperately trade Rivera and Napoli (who also could have been non-tendered).

Gotta give credit to the Blue Jays. They got completely out of the contracts of Wells, Rios and Halladay, along with most of Scott Rolen's. Now they need to show restraint by not blowing it on the wrong guys again (not that Halladay was a wrong guy). There's talk about extending Jose Bautista, but I hope they'd wait until he proves what kind of player he is. How do you reward the guy long-term at this point after one monster season preceeded by years of obscurity?

I'd agree with you on Vernon Wells, but it was no secret that the Angels were going to go after both Carl Crawford and Adrian Beltre.

True, but the past few years the Angels have also acquired Haren, Kazmir, Hunter and Guerrero without the usual rampant preceeding rumors. No other team has a track record of maintaining in-house discussions.

A little birdie tells me that if the Rangers have a slow start and are out of it at the trade deadline...a certain AL MVP may be on the market.

Mike Trout at #1 kills me personally because out of high school he signed on to play for East Carolina University, whose baseball games I attend regularly. He skipped that opportunity and signed with the Angels, and I know we missed out on quite a talent. The ECU Pirates needed a spark plug last year. That, and a kick in the ass!

well, at least there's 1 astro on there. my oklahoma city redhawks were the triple-a farm team of the rangers for 20-some years, and lately we'd gotten used to seeing great prospects come through and move up to the big leagues and become all-stars. now we're the astros' triple-a farm team and it's gonna be an uphill climb for a while. :ohwell but it's still baseball, right? :thumbup

Not that I'm an expert, but the Cardinals, White Sox, and Astros are the teams I often see mentioned as having the barest organizations. At least the White Sox seem to have drafted or developed a couple good players over the last couple of years (Dan Hudson, Chris Sale, Gordon Beckham) after years of striking out.
