BobbyLewis222
I did not see this topic anywhere, but it seems like it could be a fun time. What are your favorite Wilco lyrics? Mine change often, but right now I'm digging: "His goal in life was to be an echo"
LaughingDog
"An embarrassing poem was written when I was alone, in love with you."
Robby
A fixed bayonet through the great southwest to forget her Actually that whole song could be my favorite Wilco lyric, but my favorite changes often too.
-seven
Too many to list but here's what comes to mind:Back in your old neighborhood, the cigarettes taste so good.Basically all of Sunken Treasure but especially these two lines:There's rows and rows of houses with windows painted blue with the light from a TV running parallel to youBut there is no sunken treasure rumored to be wrapped inside my ribs in a sea black with ink ...and this: As your spine starts to shine, you shiver at your soul. a fist so clear and climbing punches a hole in the sky so you can see for yourself of you don't believe me. There's so much less to this than you think.I could go on forever...
Mr. Heartbreak
Via Chicago and She's A Jar have some of the best Wilco lyrics of all time. I printed my name on the back of a leafAnd I watched it float awayThe hope I had in a notebook full of white dry pagesWas all I tried to save But the wind blew me back via ChicagoIn the middle of the nightAnd not without fightAt the crush of veils and starlight and... Are there really ones like these? The ones I dreamFloat like leavesAnd freeze to spread skeleton wingsI passed through before I knew you and let's not forget I Am Trying To Break Your Heart: I want to glide through those brown eyes dreamingTake you from the inside, baby hold on tightYou were so right when you said I've been drinkingWhat was I thinking when we said good night

JAK2112
"An embarrassing poem was written when I was alone, in love with you." One of my absolute favorites. Another one that gets me every time:"I know we should be grateful, everything is falling apartEverything is breaking, and it lifts my heartTo see you as an angel, as some ghostly work of artWhy don't you come to me now, know who you are"

calvino
"Phone my family, tell them I'm loston the sidewalkand, no, it's not OK" (Tweedy's delivery of the lyric is great)
moxiebean
"Drag your blanket blindlyAnd fill your heart with smoke" For me conjures a mental picture of a usually ever-optimistic Linus van Pelt, crushed and heartbroken.

a-me-with-a-you
A lot of great choices here, the first ones that popped to mind have been named already so I'll go with my fifth choice. This doesn't really count because it's a Guthrie lyric:Bitter tastes of twigs we chewed where tangled wood vines twine This does:In the beginning we closed our eyesWhenever we kissedWe were surprised toFind so much inside
choo-choo-charlie
Most everything on Summerteeth, but if I must be specific: Are there really ones like these / the ones I dream / float like leavesand freeze to spread skeleton wings / I passed through before I knew you (pretty much the entire lyrics to "She's a Jar" AND In the beginning / we closed our eyes whenever we kissed / we were surprised to find so much inside AND "ummmmm........." Mr. Heartbreak
Not to derail this thread, but the person who mentioned their befuddlement at some fans' dislike of SBS should read these. There were no lyrics of this caliber on that album. These great quotes are mainly from ST, BT, AGIB & YHF, the four greatest albums in the Wilco discography.

I also agree that lyrically, those four albums are the best. I really like Impossible Germany lyrics though: The fundamental problem we all need to face/Gorgeous and alone, face to face And here's some more Wilco lyrics: I'm not lying, sure, it seems like I'm trying to get back at you. I also agree that lyrically, those four albums are the best.Yeah, I didn't remember your nickname. Sorry. lolI also have a special prejudice for those albums for a couple other reasons: 1) I'm a writer myself & 2) I discovered Wilco by way of a 1998 Jeff Tweedy solo show, so the lyrics of some of those songs were already kicking my ass before I even heard the official releases.
