Your 10 favorite Kinks songs

Recommended Posts

I know that this is a damn-near impossible task, with their catalog as deep as it is. Still, let's all try.

In no solid-set order:

  • Waterloo Sunset
  • Celluloid Heroes
  • The Village Green Preservation Society
  • Two Sisters
  • Death of a Clown
  • I'm Not Like Everybody Else
  • Where Have All the Good Times Gone?
  • Picture Book
  • Lola
  • No Return

And I'll probably want to change something once you all get your lists set.

"Mr. Pleasant"

Oh Mr. Pleasant, how is Mrs Pleasant?

I hope the world is treating you right,

And your head's in the air,

And you're feeling so proud,

'Cause you're such a success,

And the whole wide world is on your side, hey hey.

How are you today?

People say Mr. Pleasant is good,

Mr. Pleasant is kind,

Mr. Pleasant's okay,

Mr. Pleasant don't mind.

As long as Mr. Pleasant's all right, hey hey.

How are you today?

How's your father, how's your mother?

How's your sister, how's your brother?

How's your brand, new limousine,

Twenty-four inch TV screen?

Did you like prosperity

More than you liked poverty?

Life is easier, so much easier,

Life is easier now.

Oh Mr. Pleasant, how is Mrs Pleasant?

Did you know she was flirting around

With another young man,

And he's taking her out

When you have to work late?

And it's not so pleasant after all, hey hey.

How are you today?

People say Mr. Pleasant is good,

Mr. Pleasant is kind,

Mr. Pleasant's okay,

Mr. Pleasant don't mind.

As long as Mr. Pleasant's all right, hey hey.

How are you today?

Mr. Pleasant is good,

Mr. Pleasant is kind,

Mr. Pleasant's okay.

Tough shit.

I felt the same way as you about that song. But then, I heard it again for the first time in a long time and its perfection really just hit me. Hard.

Not just the hook and the cheekiness, but the entire way that the song was put together, both musically and lyrically. It is goddamn PERFECT.

And that is, sadly, probably its greatest downfall, as that has led to the overexposure that drive so many of us away from it.

But the next time that you have a chance, listen. And I mean REALLY listen to that song. Maybe you'll regain an appreciation, as I did.

If I never hear Lola again it will be too soon. It wasn't that great in the first place, despite being somewhat controversial and then the radio played the shit out of it. Victoria on the other other hand is really great, and clearly Waterloo Sunset is a masterpeice.

Too hard. I'll just go with what comes to mind.

Sitting By the Riverside - is incredible.

Sitting In My Hotel - is awesome, though I have not heard the full album. Someone made a Kinks comp for me with this on it.

Come on Now -

Ring the Bells

Shangri-La

Waterloo Sunset

And people will not say the early ones since everyone knows those, but they had so many classic songs right off the bat. A lot of them are on a compilation I bought called Well Respected Kinks.

She's Bought a Hat for Princess Marina - I was obsessed with this one for a while.

Strangers - every song Wes Anderson has used like Nothing In this World....too

Village Green

Kinda Kinks is a nice early album. I wish they would have put 2 more originals instead of the covers.

Waterloo Sunset

The Village Green Preservation Society

I'm Not Like Everybody Else

Dedicated Follower of Fashion

Sunny Afternoon

Picture Book

Victoria

A Well Respected Man

Till the End of the Day

Lola (I know we've all heard it thousands of times over the years, so I sorta get some of the hate for the song. But it has such a memorable guitar intro, great hooks throughout, a killer chorus, and a great arrangement. Any songwriter would kill to write something this good if they're being honest.)

Yeah, it's one of my favorites. I was stunned when I found out it was a B-side. I grew up with all the CD re-issues, so I didn't even realize for awhile that it wasn't actually a proper album track on Face to Face.

Dave Davies doc on BBC4 Friday night - the man himself reminisces.

Gotta get out my HAM TV for that one.

;-)

Hopefully they'll put it online so that we can see it over here.
