Truly awful TV shows promoted as though they were the Holy Grail

Recommended Posts

Friends

Agreed!

A lot of friends of mine got into it at the time, still talk of it highly. These are friends whose taste I normally very much admire (one's a comedy writer himself).

But I've always found the show simply woeful.

Lost.

Great premise to start out (Gilligan's Island meets The Twilight Zone), and great first couple seasons. Loved it.

But it just got too weird for its own good. Annoyingly disjointed and impossible to watch, let alone follow.

The ending was so-so. Maybe it was planned that way from the start, but I think it was just a semi-graceful way to get out of the hole they dug themselves into.

Oh yeah, HUGE agreement on Friends. Sucks harder than a Hoover on steroids.

Also, Desperate Housewives. Although maybe I just don't get it because I have a Y chromosome.

Y'all are crazy. While maybe not one of the best shows of all-time, Friends was a great sitcom. Lost was great, too.

While I enjoyed the first season of Heroes a lot, that one went off the rails immediately. Other than that, though, I can't really think of any shows that were heavily promoted but were just terrible.

24. The first season was awesome, groundbreaking, exciting TV. Something truly unique and special. Just loved it.

And then they did it again. And again. And again. And again... I gave up halfway through the 3rd season. Tried again for the 5th (or 6th?) season and they were still at the exact same formula. That show should have been a 1 season in & out -- it would have been legendary.

I also never got the appeal of Lost, as I also don't get the appeal of Mad Men. I wouldn't call either "truly awful" but I never understood why people love(d) those shows so much.

Re Lost: no ending would have satisified everyone....I found it quite moving, and liked the ambiguity...after all, they are basically tackling the mystery of the afterlife and the creators obviously had their influences in coming up with a theory or concept. I don't know of any show with such grand ambition.

I don't understand the allure of True Blood...I tried to watch it but it just seemed like some weird and campy blood soaked porno.

LOST and Big Bang Theory are golden.

How I Met Your Mother is a horrible abomination.

Was the Holy Grail promoted?

LOST was golden until the Network called their bluff and actually renewed the show. In retrospect, it's SO obvious that Lindelhof and Cuse didn't have a freaking clue what their end game to the story would be.

Anything CSI.

I wouldn't say the original CSI was "truly awful," particularly the early seasons. In classic major network fashion they wrecked it by trying to duplicate it, not just once but twice.

Saw thing with Law & Order. I thought the early seasons were decent enough police procedurals but once they added the Criminal Intent and SVU versions, it just became too much.

I don't think anyone really knows what "truly awful" means. The "truly awful" stuff is usually canceled fairly quickly. It's shows like According to Jim or Last Man Standing or 2 Broke Girls, which defy logic by surviving into multiple seasons despite being absolutely terrible.
