i've been on a big Silver Jews/David Berman kick lately. i could list a ton of examples from him.... one of the better lyricists of our (or anyone else's) time.

Yeah, he always comes to mind when these sort of threads pop up:

In 1984 I was hospitalized for approaching perfection

Slowly screwing my way across Europe, they had to make a correction

I know that a lot of what I say has been lifted off of men's room walls

I really have to be in the mood for them -- I need to pull out their stuff soon - it's been a while.

We made mad love

Shadow love

Random love

And abandoned love

Accidentally, like a martyr

The hurt gets worse

And the heart gets harder

Seconded.

Since my favorites are mostly ancient stuff like that, here's something a little more current. Can't vouch for the accuracy, as I am pulling this off the internet:

Shit shots count
If the table's tilted, just pay the man who levels the floor
Pride is what you charge a proud man for having
Shame is what you sell to a whore.

Well, just goes to show
Though people say we're an unlikely couple
Doris Day, and Mott the Hopple

It's a dead man's world

Life is just a break

A time in between, before we finally get to take

That long, long nap

After years of being awake

And I could find another dream, one that keeps me warm and clean

But I ain't dreamin' anymore, I'm waking up

So I'll take two of what you're having and I'll take everything you got

To kill this goddamn lonely, goddamm lonely love.

The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first

The doctor grabbed my by the throat and yelled, "God's consolation prize!"

One day you're going to have to face
A deep dark truthful mirror
And it's going to tell you things that I still love
you too much to say

Was it a millionaire who said, "Imagine no possessions"?

A poor little schoolboy who said, "We don't need no lessons"?

Now you can't afford to take

All the drugs your parents used to take

Because of their mistakes you'd better be wide awake

Oooooh I wish I was your mother

I wish I'd been your father

'n then I would have seen you

Would have been you as a child

  Played houses with your sister

And wrestled with all your brothers

  And then who knows

I might have felt a family for a while

I find it hard to believe you don't know

The beauty that you are
But if you don't: let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid

You said you were an actress
Yes, I believe you are I thought you'd be a star
So I drank up all the money, yes I drank up all the money
With these phonies in this Hollywood bar
These friends of mine in this Hollywood bar

Loneliness and frustration
We both came down with an acute case
When the lights came up at two I caught a glimpse of you
And your face looked like something
Death brought with him in his suitcase

Your pretty face it looked so wasted
Another pretty face devastated

The French inhaler he stamped and mailed her
So long, Norman she said, so long, Norman

  • 1 month later...
  • 3 weeks later...

Well, I’m livin’ in a foreign country but I’m bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born
“Come in,” she said, “I’ll give you shelter from the storm”

and from another song...

Oh, the Union Central is pullin’ out and the orchids are in bloom
I’ve only got me one good shirt left and it smells of stale perfume
In fourteen months I’ve only smiled once and I didn’t do it consciously
Somebody’s got to find your trail, I guess it must be up to me
