Too bad Hunter S. Thompson isn't around for any of this - he would have had a field day with this.

I am sure Obama will be blamed.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to find out some minimum wage caterer employees pulled something

This is funny and ironic since Republicans paint the Obamas as evil, but let's not forget that both Barack Obama and Joe Biden have had their own run-ins with plagiarism accusations. Biden's were quite serious.

ha, yes.  It's somehow, so much more ironic considering the candidate though.  Michelle is such elegant first lady.

My DVR caught some of James Corden after Colbert last night. He said the room in Trump's apartment where the 60 Minutes interview took place looked like "what a little kid imagines a rich person's house looks like." I laughed a lot at that.

Well, this is the most respect I've ever felt for Ted Cruz. Which, granted, is not saying much. But his statement of "Vote your conscience" took some genuine courage in the face of the rabid Trumpers at the RNC. Let's not forget that Trump stated that Ted's dad was involved in JFK's assassination. Did The Orange One really expect an endorsement?

As for Chris "Lapdog" Christie, I didn't think I could possible admire him less, but it turns out I can, and do. What a Trump patsy.

Normally, over here in Australia we would just gawk at the Republican convention and laugh our heads off, but it's all frankly terrifying at the moment. Given that Australia's political culture is in equal disarray, it's a hard time for folks like me who dig things like civilised discourse, non-populist public representatives and the planet Earth.

Even during this moment, he looked like a smug dick. I think he was saying to himself, "I just ruined Trump's chances to win this year, which makes it easier to run in 2020. I don't have to wait until 2024."

I'm glad he did it, but I think it was all about him.

Great shot. During the Cruz' speech, during the speech, I kept thinking of what Sir Stewart wrote in the other thread - about having fear of the Trump supporters. Cruz's wife had to be escorted out - stay classy Trumpites...

Even funnier than the non-endorsement was the fact that he had been allotted ten minutes, but stretched it to 23 minutes.  Filibustering the RNC.  I approve of that.

What was the point of the lady from NASA?  The GOP is not going to renew the space shuttle program, or increase NASA funding.

I think you are exactly right as to his motives.

I thought that was a strange inclusion too, but then their entire roster of speakers has been pretty bizarre. Maybe she was included because they needed another female to "appeal to the women voters"?

Yes, funny that Cruz took his own sweet time not endorsing The Donald. :lol

They needed a non-blonde white woman.  ANY non-blonde white woman. For diversity.

I am not sure which is more depressing, the hour plus string of lies that the GOP nominee gave last night, the fact the MSM has virtually given him a pass on his lies, or the GOP electorate believes him.

Last night's speech proved the GOP is the party of fear. Trump wants to scare the American people with lies into voting for him. Tragic.

KevinG -- I had the same thought while watching The Speech, but then read an article this morning in the NYT[!] demonstrating that the "facts" cited by Trump were mostly true or, at least, supportable.  What offended me was his attempt to co-opt "You Can't Always Get What You Want" after the speech! I wonder what Mick and Keith think.

Watching Trump, somehow I fell asleep over the shouting coming out the TV.

Can't say he is going to gain any new voters from that speech - from on the fence Republicans or the undecided Independents and Democrat. Hopefully, the Democrats are able to put something together next week and put on a better show - it shouldn't be too hard.

Regarding the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" - he also used that song before the introduction of Pence as VP - I thought it was a rather odd choice of song for the occasion.

Totally agree about using that song. It's saying, "You didn't get the nominee you wanted, you got me." Is he really trying to say we need him I suppose so.?

I disagree about gaining new voters. We've mostly seen clips of his speeches. How many of us have a watched a complete speech? He mostly stayed on script (I thought joining the crowd on the USA chant played awkward on TV) and probably didn't sound as crazy as many of the clips have made him seem.

Is Trump even choosing the songs?  Or is G.E. Smith trolling the shit out of the convention?  Between Eminence Front, Station to Station, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Limelight, and most of the comically bad "insert generic ____ type song here" type of filler songs I've heard, I believe the latter.

According to the Washington Post, not so much.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/07/22/fact-checking-donald-trumps-acceptance-speech-at-the-2016-rnc/

But the thing is his "facts" may be supportable, but when the are cherry picked to make his point they are essentially meaningless.

The point remains,he is using fear to make people vote for him.

This is my question. Are enough people really this scared? Has their everyday experience of America been that frightening? I mean, I get the suffering of some rust belt folks with industries shutting down, but do that many of our citizens walk outside everyday and say, "Oh god, how terrible. This place is falling apart and I'm frightened for my life. The last eight years have been the most dangerous time of my life."
