A Wilco State of Mind

Recommended Posts

Nice. I know skipping the standard publicity steps made their last record refreshing for them, but I missed the standard Wilco interview. Nothing new here just the same humanism, motivation and creativity that makes Wilco inspire me to make stuff.

As a side note to those who feared a happy frontman, not to worry, Tweedy still has some darkness.

Yes, it's nice to see some press once again.  Really enjoyed this article.

I'm curious how the live show arrangements will change based on this.  Now it makes more sense why they're doing 2 and 3 night shows and the extended Fillmore run out west, to work out the changes in the set.  I for one would love to see some of the quieter songs come back... Muzzle of Bees, Dash 7, One Sunday Morning... to name a few.

Oh, and Bull Black Nova still fits on any setlist for any kind of show.  The acoustic version of that is definitely a silent assassin.

Fabulous article.

I'd love to see them sprinkle in Woodgrain, Bob Dylan's 49th Beard, More Like The Moon, Black Moon, Rising Red Lung & Open Mind.

Agreed. Stuff like 'Venus', 'Radio Cure' and 'Far Far Away' is also screaming out for the acoustic treatment.

I've never loved Nels more than after reading this: "Jeff stopped asking me for setlist ideas like 10 years ago because I would say, like, 'Let’s open with ‘Radio Cure’.”

Dear Via Chicago,

"It’s funny because if you play a show in Italy, somebody in Des Moines goes, “Yeah, the setlists are getting pretty stale.” Like, were you at the fucking show? No, there were like four thousand Italians going fucking crazy, asshole. [Laughs.]"

Man, Jeff's "voice" always comes through so clearly in interviews, doesn't it?

Great read, part II.

heh.  that's pretty much spot on for us...

We look at what we played last time we were in town, try and change at least half of it, then — we’ve taken it down now, but we had a request thing on our website — we’d get a printout of what the top request is. The songs nobody wants to hear always have like a thousand requests because some super fan has, like, hacked the system. [Laughs] Oh, really, you want to hear the Japanese B-side of this?

I swear I did not do this.

Those are 2 fantastic in depth pieces in CoS.

OK, who's the VC'er from Des Moines? Give yourself up :)

I would go to every show that started with "Radio Cure". I love that song! This article made me super excited for the Schmilco tour, even more than the first article did. If they bring back the request tool I've been thinking about songs that haven't seen the light in forever that would shine in this setup. I would love to see songs like "Please be Patient With Me", "Country Disappeared", or "Remember the Mountain Bed" integrated amongst many others.

Man I'd love to hear a quiet, piano-driven version of "Venus..." live, but I don't see that one happening.

Too 'Jay' I'd wager. Unless they approached it as a six-piece very subtly ala "One Sunday Morning", the spell would be broken.

On that note, has it ever been performed live?

Not publicly, to my knowledge. Jeff has played it during at least one living room show.
