Saw Spiderman 3 this weekend. I really liked most of it. The effects were unreal. I liked the Spiderman/Goblin chase at the beginning, the sequence with Gwen Stacy falling out of the building, and all the Sandman shots. The first 2/3 of the movie was perfect...it was funny, entertaining, interesting, visually spectacular. Then I thought the end third just seemed a bit less than what it could have been. Basically, the last 50-60 minutes (yeah, it's a long movie....2 hours 20 minutes...and it seemed like it towards the end) is the only part of all the Spiderman movies that felt like a typica

A great interview by Pitchfork, I think. I wish he would have asked the question, "You probably realize that Pitchfork's rating system is totally random...after all, we gave the mediocre Okemah and the Melody Riot a 6.8.....we gave Get Behind Me Satan a better rating than Elephant.....we gave the Belle and Sebastian beauty 'The Boy with the Arab Strap' an 0.8......the guy that you fired scored a 7.1 for Bigger Than Blue....and if you look at ALL the album ratings of Built to Spill, The Shins, Modest Mouse, Spoon, White Stripes and Okkervil River, which are your contemporaries, none of t

Rolling Stones 25 Most Underappreciated Artists
jakobnicholas replied to So Long's topic in Just A Fan
I think it's odd Seger is on this list, though I do like many of his songs....especially his mellower songs, like Till it Shines, Famous Final Scene, Roll Me Away, Somewhere Tonight... I'd like to see Vic Chesnutt or the Flaming Lips on the list. -

Here's what Spoon's website says about the stupid album title: The new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is named after the sound of one of the first songs written for the record, "The Ghost of You Lingers". I like Spoon a lot. Their music is just catchy and energetic and clever and good. Lyrically, Spoon doesn't overwhelm me....and Daniel sounds marble-mouthed at times....but neither of those minor criticisms prevent me from cranking their cd's full-blast.

Ha. Yeah, I kinda agree. The middle has some "what-the-hell?!" moments for sure. I heard John Lassiter had some major re-working on the 'Robinsons' (it must have been REALLY out-of-sorts before he came in). I liked the beginning 3rd and ending 3rd. But parts of the middle were like, "what the hell?!?!?". The bowler hat villain guy was quite strange but funny. I liked the character.

Pixar's next movie comes out in June. I have a feeling it's gonna be great. Today, Disney has a 9 minute chunk of the movie to watch online. Check it out: http://home.disney.go.com/movies/

Those who stay up late may not want to miss O'Brien in San Francisco this week. His shows away from New York are almost always great. Many good guests...including Dana Carvey tonight, George Lucas tomorrow (Conan will have a bit this week...maybe tomorrow...not sure...where he tours the Lucas compound), and Tom Waits on Friday.

I agree. Reminds me a lot of Soft Bulletin.

For some reason, I don't mind people being critical of Ghost. I love the record, but at the same time, agree that's a little all over the place. To me, the first half is brilliant....then trails off a tad. But I do get defensive when Being There is brought up. NO WAY does that record deserve anything less than A marks. Pitchfork missed the boat on the that one.

Overall I like Pitchfork a lot. If they give an album a super-high rating, it makes me search around to other sources to see if others agree. I got the new Menomena and new Sparklehorse mostly because of Pitchfork. Both albums are good...maybe not as brilliant as Pitchfork claim, but good nonetheless. And I LOVE their news tidbits. I know, by checking their site often, I'll be the first to know when the Stripes announce their US dates or when a lead singer of a hip band exposes his weenie.

Icky Thump - New White Stripes album

Any idea what these 16 un-played states might be? In the midwest, I'm guessing Iowa or Arkansas or Nebraska....? -
Icky Thump - New White Stripes album

Blue Orchid isn't one of the songs I think of when I think of the Stripes, but I like it. And The Nurse may not be overly memorable on the disc, but it's a highlight live. -
The Lips bust out "Pompeii" for the first time
jakobnicholas replied to Orkie's topic in Someone Else's Song
My bad. I just assumed....wrongly. Their live drummer really attacks the kit. I know Drozd creates much of the great soundscapes on Lips records, so he must lay down multiple tracks with multiple instruments? I know Drozd is quite diverse. -

Thanks for the link. That's awesome. In the 2nd clip, it's fun watching Drozd go nuts on the drums. That guy's amazing. -
Is that Brit Daniel of Spoon on the far right?

The Flaming Lips have a new song called "The Supreme Being Teaches Spider-Man How To Be In Love" on the yet-to-be-released Spiderman 3 soundtrack. Has anyone heard it? It's the Lips, so I KNOW the song is worth hearing.

Are you saying he's like Nels on a chalkboard? Sorry...couldn't resist. I like Nels. He can noodle all he wants if Wilco schedules a show in the Midwest.

Ha. Funny, but that's not me. I think Being There is Wilco's best. SBS might fight for second. It's funny to me how some think that liking this album means you're a wussy-boy or something. Would it be totally cool if Wilco put out an album with this lineup that sounded like Tupelo's Still Feel Gone or the ragged masterpiece "Dreamer In My Dreams"? Hell yes! But let's get real, that might require a big bag of weed, cigarettes and some alcohol. Sky Blue Sky does sound pretty. It does sound mature. The lyrics are definitely more straight-forward. For me, it's refreshing. But I can und

Your thought on You Are My Face is implying that, "yeah, it's a good song...but only because it's an old song". And I take it that you also like Hate It Here because it may be a re-worked old song. So....I may be reading too much into your comments, but you seem to be suggesting that Jeff and the band aren't creating songs as great as the Being There-Summerteeth days. If so, I think that's a bunch of bullshit. Just my opinion. Being There, to me, is and always will be Wilco's shining moment. But Being There came out when we weren't too sure how great Wilco was. We liked them live....we liked

Good review. I especially like what you say about "Either Way". I got to see it performed live in KC last year, and it was so beautiful and mesmerizing....I agree that it's the heart of the album.
