  1. Larry Bud was one of the many things that made the Letterman show feel so fresh and unique and cutting edge. He, along with Chris Elliot, will always be associated with Letterman's superb and hysterical NBC shows.
  2. From whitestripes.net (which was taken from White Stripes myspace page) With unbridled enthusiasm for the June release of Icky Thump, the NME.com has printed a North American tour routing that holds no semblance of reality. Indeed, it looks like their journalists simply found and printed the tour routing the band did in support of their 2005 release, Get Behind Me Satan. In fact, The White Stripes have yet to confirm their North American routing as of yet. But we are happy to say that it will include all 10 provinces and 3 territories of Canada, as well as the remaining 16 states of the
  3. I agree. Someone at whitestripes.net says the Greek theatre has Tony Bennett and others playing the "new" dates. These "new" dates must be false.
  4. There are a few dates that don't match the GBMS tour. Now a story at Billboard revealing the new dates: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/articl...t_id=1003559785
  5. A couple dates are slightly different than the Get Behind Me Satan tour. Is this legit? Odd that the cities and dates are basically identical.
  6. KEXP recorded a mini performance from Okkervil River (a top-5 current band in my humble opinion) at SXSW....6 songs with an interview with Will Sheff inbetween. He reveals that August is when they hope to release their next record. Link: http://depts.washington.edu/kexp/blog/?p=1930
  7. Xavier got screwed. Oden's shove should have been a technical foul....he wasn't reaching for the ball...he simply rammed his body into the Xavier player, making the dude fly out of bounds and to a heap on the court. Unbelievably, CBS showed ONE replay and made no comment about it. If ever I saw a flagrant foul, that was it.

    ALTWYS

Patterson Hood said it was the best opening album cut of the year. When I first heard it, I got chills....the onslaught of guitars, then Glenn absolutely pounding the drum set...really amazing. Someone on this board said it sounded like 2 people arguing back and forth. The sound of the instruments painted a picture than any lyric could.
  9. That's way deep, but I think I agree with that.
  10. 2 reasons I'm picking KU to win it all: -Julian Wright -Sheron Collins Texas A&M, Georgetown and Florida will be the other 3 in the Final Four.
  11. I totally agree. They should try a White Stripes approach to recording their next record. The Stripes usually take about 2 weeks at most to record. And about Around the Sun, I really tried to figure the thing out, but I gave up. Here's my break-down: Songs I like: The Ascent of Man, I Wanted to Be Wrong, Final Straw, Around the Sun. Songs I TRIED to like because of nice elements, but just seemed WAY TOO over-thought and ultimately forgettable: Worst Joke Ever, High Speed Train, Boy in the Well, Aftermath. Songs I think are total CRAP: Leaving New York, Electron Blue, The Outside
  12. I like Up's lyrics, as they seem to document a time of the band when Stipe thought it'd be there last record...so all the songs are about hanging in there and characters overcoming obstacles. Reveal IS a pretty cheesy record, but it has a few shining moments.
  13. I've been an R.E.M. defender over their last handful of records....Up I think is very under-rated and Reveal is a step down, but has some great moments.....but Around the Sun is just a colossal disappointment. As much as I tried, I can't even say the record is average. "Bland" is the best word to describe it. Stipe's lyrics seemed so forced (with exception of Final Straw and I Wanted To Be Wrong....I liked those)...and the music....c'mon Peter Buck....you're the guy with the amazing guitar riff in Flowers Of Guatemala. And I hope Mills trashes all his Brian Wilson discs...they served as grea
  14. I think it was Spin magazine that had a photo of the band (Tweedy, Coomer, Stirrat for sure...mabye Bennett, can't remember)....and they were in their pajamas, like having a sleepover slumber party. Anyone remember that? I DO think Tweedy/Wilco will be on the cover some day. And I think it'd be very cool.
  15. I immediately thought of Bennett's quote in the IATTBYH documentary where he tells Jeff they should play more "rockers". I love the "rockers" in Being There....and they give a great ebb and flow to the album. But for some reasoon, I don't have a need for one on SBS. Though, I must say, some of the slow builds in a few songs are nice...while you can't call them "rockers", they DO rock out...and will be fun live. I agree with your description "beautiful".
  16. I would agree that White/White Stripes rivals Tweedy/Wilco. I might put Will Sheff/Okkervil River up there...but not yet. I, too, like Under Blackpool Lights. I like White's voice influctuations on Hardest Button to Button. And I watched all 4 nights of Conan the week you reference...the Stripes played every night and were absolutely smokin.'
  17. Is it possible for an album to be "boring" and "great"? I just bought J.D. Souther's "You're Only Lonely" single off itunes. I like the song. It's simple. Nice melody. But would I put it up there with Neil Young's "Down By The River"? Hell no. Maybe it's a simple song, but I still like it a lot. And I recently bought new albums by Islands and Menomena. Both of the albums are pretty amazing, and each have songs that are really incredible. But I can tell it was those bands' intent to have some sweeping, overly-dramatic songs. I don't get that impression with Sky Blue Sky. Wilco seem to be
  18. I gave to temptation and listened to the stream once-through Saturday night. I really can't say what I absolutely think YET....though I will say that nothing gave me goosebumps like the first time I heard I Am Trying To Break Your Heart or At Least That's What You Said. But...I also had the feeling I had when listening to an R.E.M. album when they were consistently putting out top-notch records. I feel like Wilco just cannot and will not disappoint right now. Overall, Sky Blue Sky sounds fresh and unique and special. Either Way is just beautiful. And I like the way they changed the title s
  19. I can't really imagine anything AGIB song being "dropped". If I had to pick a handful of AGIB songs as "keepers" for future concerts, I'd say ALTWYS, Hell Is Chrome, Muzzle of Bees and Theologians. I don't anticipate AGIB having any problem holding its own in the Wilco catalog.
  20. How long did Buckner play? Did he play songs off all albums, or did he focus on his new stuff? I was on the way to see him in Lawrence the night before the St. Louis show, but Buckner canceled it the day of the show 'cause he got stuck in a snow bank in Iowa. Luckily, he wasn't hurt. He's supposed to reschedule, but I'm doubting he'll have a backing band with him whenever that happens....we'll see.
  21. I'm making chocolate chip cookies and don't have enough flour. Can ayone hook me up with a half-cup? Thanks!
  22. Have you seen the Stripes live? I was absolutely floored when seeing the Stripes live in KC a couple years back. That they can procuce so much sound with just 2 people is amazing. And White strutting around with his guitar....especially on a song like Death Letter...is mesmerizing. And I love the passion and expression of White's voice...especially live. I agree that Blue Orchid wasn't super great, but I think the Raconteurs is a super solid rock album. "Blue Veins" alone is worth the cd price.
  23. "Someone to Love", from April 3rd's Traffic and Weather, is available on itunes. I think it's a very solid FOW tune.
  24. I'm gonna wait. But if Wilco streams it on their website before its release (surely they will....you think?)...I know I'd listen at least twice through.
  25. I see... Clearing away the clutter...wiping the slate clean...opening your mind...seeing the light...charting your own path...getting out there and making a difference...standing tall... jakobnicholas Art Critic
