  2. Sizemore. Even though his first name gives me the willies. Lefties will be favored, right? I'm with you in that the HR Derby is fun to watch. I disagree with the Berman comment, though. It's the one time in the year that I find him at his most annoying. Enough with the clever (read: inane) name adjustments. And how many times will he make references to the ball traveling to White Plains or Utica or wherever?
  3. Hey moe: I'll definitely be at Folks Fest and possibly Rockygrass next weekend....
  4. So I've nailed 8 out of my 10 so far. How are the rest of you folks faring with your lists?
  5. I believe that was a Canadian beer, commie. Wow. That's good to know. Must be a regional deal.
  6. Who cares where it comes from? Let's keep our focus on where it's going. It could be made by Balinese unicorns for all I care, just make it accessible to my mouth.

  8. ELP's version of "Fanfare for the Common Man" Eric Johnson's "Cliff's of Dover"
  9. That's because all we had was Pong. We played Wiffle Ball all day long, too (hey, it originated in CT). Base paths right on the side lawn. We also played a good deal of Kick Ball, which I've found a lot of folks are unfamiliar with...?
  10. Not to stray too far from the HBO series, but I watched an excellent documentary from The Sundance Channel last night called "Horse Redemption" which profiled prisoners from a CO prison breaking/training wild mustangs for public use. Really well put together and pretty fascinating for the therapeutic possibilities for the prisoners as well as the well-being of the mustangs, which need to be thinned out of wild population, to a degree, for domestic use per quota, anyway.
  11. Christopher Hitchens is sure: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/feature.../hitchens200808
  12. I find the most amazing thing about this story to be, not the fact that they constructed a replica of Fenway Park's Green Monster in center field http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/10/nyregion/10towns.html but, that these kids like the Red Sox. Greenwich is in Fairfield County, which the rest of the state concedes as Yankee territory as it's basically in New York, anyway.
  13. I've always really liked the "Ollin Arageed." They were playing this for a long while as we entered the Garcia tribute in Berkeley a few years ago and it felt really appropriate and set the vibe for the night.
  14. Open to interpretation, of course, but the lyricist for the song (Robert Hunter) has said that a "box of rain" is the world we live in. I forget where I read that but it stuck out for me. Phil wrote the music and Hunter added lyrics. Also, Phil's dad was on his death bed at the time and Phil was visiting him often in the hospital and has said that he always associates the song with that kind of vibe.
  15. I think it's a fantastic version, though. One of the few redeeming qualities to the overall tepid show. Garcia adds some sweet "Lord, I've been walking down the road..." stuff at the end, too. sidenote: They played Hendrix' version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" after the show for the fireworks display.
  16. Man, I was watching that the other night and I could have sworn he swooped in for something. I assumed it was a frech fry or something at first. Remy/Orsillo didn't pick up on it, though. The shot on youtube is much closer than the live feed was, too.
  17. Among the claims of personal harassment, this would be the meat of the case: "He also said he missed out on promotions because he is an atheist. 'I was told because I can't put my personal beliefs aside and pray with troops I wouldn't make a good leader,' Hall said." Whether it's true or not is up to the courts. I do find it interesting that the only thing Hall is looking to gain is "the guarantee of religious freedom in the military."
  18. Wow. I've often joked about (and dreamed of) this very thing....
  19. They've done a very nice version of "Dead Flowers" before, too.
  20. Good point. My two older boys go to a charter school that's based on Outward Bound tenets. It works for them/us. Childcare is expensive, of course. My 1 year old gets free care at the Jewish pre-school his mom works at. If she didn't get the discount it'd be very challenging for us. It was when the two older boys needed childcare....
  21. True. As to the myraid of problems with NCLB, I suggest anyone who wants to put blame solely on the school/teachers to watch the HBO documentary about Douglass High School in Baltimore. I teach at an inner-city school and can relate to many of the problems.
