  1. If I lived close to Clifton I'd be eating at Rutt's Hut when the pangs hit rather than any WC.
  2. Maybe there are different types of ear candles I'm not aware of but the "Potential Dangers" section of the take-it-with-a-grain-of-salt Wikipedia mentions wax dripping in the ear/burning and perforation of the eardrum/obstruction of the ear canal. Every time I've done it my wife holds the candle at a 45 degree angle or so and the base of the candle is less further in than I'd put a Q-tip. I'd say there are dangers if you're jamming the base into your ear or are burning the candle perpendicular to your ear while prone. I'm all for alternatives to traditional cures, though. And, the candles wo
  3. My wife bought me a sheet of Garcia stamps from Tanzania years ago. There's also a Montserrat series, I believe. Of course, not Western civilization recognition....
  4. Six or more "slyders" in one trip gives you the status of a "slyder pilot." Regale the grand kids for years with the distinction. Yeah, it's a stupid way to spell it but that's how they spell it.
  5. I've gotta disagree with this. I remember putting the disc in for the first time and being a bit alarmed by the bells. I thought it was a truck or something outside at first. I was confused. A bit scared, maybe. But- it got my attention. What at first seemed like a novelty to me later revealed itself as a nice fit for the song. I like the song quite a bit. I really like the time changes in it and the ethereal feel the bells lend it.
  6. "Look" huge? And Gabbard will do just fine in TX, too. I bet they'll like the t-shirts down there....
  7. This deal makes me happy, and not just in the pants.
  8. Forget it, I misunderstood your initial point. My b. It looks like they're trying to re-word the contract incentives lingo to "games played" from "games finished" for Gagne so as to avoid potentially having to move Papelbon to a set-up spot (which again, I can't see ).
  9. Why would he need to be signed to an extension? The Red Sox can use him as bait at the end of the season regardless of his status as rental/extended contract.
  10. Same as it has been barring injury, I'd guess. Really, adding another quality arm for the last third of the season is a great move. Gagne offers relief for some arms and protection against injury from the current guys in the 'pen, as well.
  11. Simply put, he makes the 'pen a lot stronger for the push to/through the playoffs. He'll also be great bait for the off-season (draft picks?). I believe it's being reported that the deal is going through and has been agreed to.
  12. I don't like putting drops in my ear as that's part of the problem I have: water getting in and not coming out. Where does the wax go once the Murine breaks it up?
  13. No way Gagne takes the closer spot from Paps. Perhaps a co-closer spot, but he's more likely to be middle relief the majority of the time. I realize Gagne has stated he wants to close, and this may inevitably hold the deal up. But I think sharing closer duties to both appease him and give Paps a break when needed would be in the cards.
  14. Weird. I checked that out from the library just last week and watched it 3-4 times. Pretty decent interview even with all the obvious drug questions and goofiness. Kesey and Garcia riffing off each other throughout was fun to watch. All members of the band were part of the interview at some point, except for Brent and Phil for some reason. The Dead played very well, too, and I think it helped expose people to the musicianship, skill level, and quality of the tunes by having the Dead do all acoustic selections for the show. The rest of the dvd contains interviews with Tom Wolfe and Tim Leary
  15. Looks like I missed this by an hour or so. If anyone wants out, I wants in!
  16. David Murphy (OF) is the prospect and Kason Gabbard is in the deal, too (supposedly). This is a steal for the Red Sox. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds..._deal_movi.html
  17. I've done these things a bunch. It's easy as long as you have someone holding/lighting the candle. All it does is create a vacuum to pull the wax out of your ears. They work well and it feels cool when it's happening. Totally safe to use them, too. Some of that wax gets pushed down in there when you use a standard Q-tip/whatever and the candles safely draw that extra stuff out. I've had ear issues all my life so these things work well for me. I've never used a paper plate with them but I guess it could help.
  18. Yeah, he's really a historian at heart. He cut into journalism writing about and criticizing/questioning the White House administration on the Viet Nam conflict (war) with The Powers That Be. It was a ballsy book to write and it helped him gain respect in the business.
  19. That Halberstam book is on my list. Pesky and Dom DiMaggio's car ride to visit the dying Ted Williams, right? He goes into the playing days with Bobby Doerr, too? Halberstam was a heck of a writer. How is it so far?
  20. See, for guys like Chico baseball has been berry, berry good to them. It can happen, folks!
  21. Even though I'm only 1/3 of the way through The Kite Runner, I started this last night and nailed the first 100 pages. Well written and engaging. His book about Lou Gehrig was excellent, too. I also picked up this to start after the above while on vacation:
  22. Just wanted to add that this is a classy response. He may come off as a twit sometimes, but he's a fair guy and a good reporter/interviewer. "As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6
  23. Hunches are fine but it's still hard to gauge a player's worth down the road. Sheffield is base ball old but still has speed and hits for power and average. Manny is on the "old" side of his career. Frank Thomas still produces. Thome to a much lesser extent still produces. Guys like Chipper Jones, Giambi, Delgado, Ordonez, Tejada. Maybe the ABs go down a bit and the speed fades and the stints on the DL are a little more frequent and a little longer, but these guys (well Tejada is still kind of young) are essential to their teams. I do agree that around age 32 you can begin to predict if a p
