Best American Band ever
uncool2pillow replied to Ghost of Electricity's topic in Someone Else's Song
This is true. I understand people not liking Grateful Dead, but I don't understand really thinking they suck. An collection of incredibly talented musicians who play together as well as any band ever has while playing some very well written songs. You don't like jamming, that's fine, I get it. It doesn't mean they suck. -
I think this must be the new RTT

I don't care if they're nominated (remote), I don' care if they win. The Grammy is the least significant performing arts award there is. If they do, by chance, perform, I would tune in, but otherwise wouldn't care in the least bit.
-
They weren't. That's kind of my point. Excessive? Probably. Shocking and outrageous? Less so, to me, than lots of other examples of police action.
-
The more I consider the situation, the more I think the crowd would not have become unruly once they began to forcibly arrest the protesters. The use of pepper spray was probably excessive. I don't have all the facts, but I doubt the video showed all the facts either. I'm glad there will be an investigation. Having said that, however, I think a warning would be a major factor. If the police told them they were going to use pepper spray, then everyone had it within their ability to avoid being sprayed. Also, I don't understand the comment from the retired police officer in the MSNBC vide

I am not trying to pick a fight here, seriously. I hope I live my whole life and never have to face the pain that pepper spray must induce. My viewing of this video makes it appear that the police did not do this without any warning. Had the protesters been asked to disperse? Did they refuse? Were they in violation of the law? If the answers to any of these questions is no then a totally agree with 66rebilac. If the answer to all is yes, then how best should the police subdue the protesters to make sure they do not become a threat as arrests begin? There may be other ways, I am no expe

What's the story here? Did they have a permit? Were they trespassing. I'm sure the pepper spray hurt like shit, but when you participate in civil disobedience, you assume certain risks. It certainly appears to me from that video that it was clear the police were going to use the spray. If the protesters wanted to avoid the spray, the could have moved. If they were in violation of the law (and again, I don't know if they were), then I see little wrong with this. Kent State this is not.

It's a good Steely Dan song, too. A little looser than most of their stuff. I can see a lot of non-Steely Dan fans liking that song, even their version.

The Rise and Fall of Columbia House
uncool2pillow replied to Oil Can Boyd's topic in Someone Else's Song
I built much of my CD collection through Columbia House. Esp. when I started exploring jazz in the late 1990s early 2000s. Appreciative that it was available, but it's time has come and gone. -
Awesome. Barry Gibb, Neil Young, now Jim Morrison. Is there no musician this guy doesn't get perfectly.

Rhett Miller and Jon Brion cover California Stars on new album
uncool2pillow replied to pathfire's topic in Just A Fan
On this we'll have to agree. The piano is really rockin' -
I'd like to hear a cover. Heard the play Don't Fear the Reaper in Des Moines once. I'd look up the date on WilcoBase, but I'm fairly lazy.

I don't watch much Maddow, but that was brilliant. Pokemon, wow...

Rhett Miller and Jon Brion cover California Stars on new album
uncool2pillow replied to pathfire's topic in Just A Fan
I don't mind different. I will listen to Devo singing Satisfaction 1,000,000 times, or Bad Plus with Wendy Lewis singing Comfortably Numb or Radio Cure. Very unique takes. There's not much character to this cover. Rhett sings to just be off on this one. Off the beat a bit, and to no positive effect to my ears. -

Rhett's one of my favorite singers, but I agree with this. Too fast, weird phrasing, not much to add. I hope the rest of the album is better. -
That might win the nostalgia thread. Both Shields & Yarnell and Dynamite Magazine together. Well done, Moss.

To answer the question this thread poses: yes. For thousands of years, people seemed to exist with no albums. My guess is that the are a couple billion in the world today who still somehow seem to make it with out 30 albums. Would I choose not to? No. But I'm pretty sure I'd survive.

Cain is a joke and was before this whole debacle. His campaign is based on "clever" marketing gimmicks. 9-9-9? Gee, it's easy to remember, so it must be right! He also said he wouldn't propose (or sign, can't remember) any bills passed by Congress more than 3 pages long. He's a loon. The damn Godfathers menu is more than 3 pages. I voted for Obama in 2008 after voting mostly for Republicans. Why? Voting for a candidate who has a history with cancer and Sarah Palin as his VP literally scared the shit out of me. I think Obama's mostly a disaster, mostly because of his own actions but

Pete Townshend's John Peel lecture - full text
uncool2pillow replied to Albert Tatlock's topic in Someone Else's Song
Hmmm... The more I listen them, the more I hear everything that's going on. Especially the drumming. Definitely more driven by Pete's songwriting and presence than Zep is by Page, but the Who is still a complete band rather than Pete and 3 others.
