How can you hate M-Shop?? A great small venue. Bob Mould once put it on his top 5 to play. I've seen Richard Thompson, Bob, Rhett Miller, Mark Olson & Gary Louris, and even Chick Corea there. -
The latest Ryan Adams thread

Stephens will be an interesting venue for him. It's great acoustics and perfect for jazz or someone like Lyle Lovett. I'd love to go, but when it rains, it pours and one has to pick & choose. We have Adam, Jonathan Richman, and Old 97s coming to central Iowa in October, all on weekdays. I'm going w/ 97s. It's closer, and I've heard Adams can be uneven live. -
Well done, very moving.

What I loved about this movie is learning about McNamara's experiences working for Ford and in WWII. I had no idea what important contributions he had made to those endeavors. The Vietnam material was strong, too, but it wasn't much that he hadn't said before already.

Agree w/ all of these. Once when my kids were about 6-8 months old, we were doing a 2 am feeding. When we started to put them back down they both started "tooting" with great frequency. My wife and I started laughing and talking about Blazing Saddles. On another note, another favorite scene of mine is the opening sequence of Royal Tenenbaums. In 5-10 minutes all the characters are developed, the setting is made beautifully clear, and the mood of the movie is perfectly established. Plus, kids who grew up watching Thomas the Tank Engine will recognize Alec Baldwin's narration.

Sorry, I kinda thought it was obvious. There still are too many mean people on VC! -

Wow, first you correct my Judd Parker reference, then you take a jab at my new handle... I might need to start complaining about all the mean people on VC! -

Fans of the 97s will appreciate the first letter in this segment.

Belated review of Blame it on Gravity on NPR Not a lot of love for this album on the board, but I gotta agree with the reviewer. It's on heavy rotation for me right now.

From USA today a new interpretation of the Beatles
uncool2pillow replied to John Smith's topic in Someone Else's Song
While I agree that trying to label the Beatles' as "conservative" is pretty ridiculous, I think this statement is equally ridiculous. Was Taxman a joke? The Beatles were being taxed by the British government like crazy then. Why? Because they were rich. -
Ken Follett - Pillars of the Earth Because Oprah told me to. Honestly, everyone I know who's read this has said it's a great read, if not great literature.

Sounds A LOT like Pink Floyd's The Wall to me.

2 Great Norm MacDonald SNL Moments. 1) About a dozen times he said "...and that just proves my theory that Germans love David Hasselhoff." 2) Every time there was a list in Forbes or similar magazines about best & worst jobs, he'd quip, "and again, for the 10th year in a row, worst job: crack whore."

Doesn't that make you an agnostic?

Okay, so I work part-time at a bookstore. Tonight, a guy comments that we sell a lot of witchcraft books. "I wouldn't want to be responsible for that when Jesus comes." Later he comments, "Hmm... Dragonology. Do people think that stuff's not real? I mean, you sell that stuff to kids!" Turns out the guy was buying a calendar and picture books and using a check from his Baptist Mission. I don't know if that's how people imagine their charitable donations being spent, but who am I to judge?

Last day for me to post here with any frequency. My 111 7th graders start invading my space tomorrow.
