  1. Three great WWI reads by Barbara Tuchman (probably my favorite history writer) in chronological order by history, not publication (copied from Wikipedia): The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World Before the War, 1890–1914 (1966)—Covers the hesitant rise of U.S. imperialism, anarchist assassinations, socialism, communism, and the devolution of the 19th century order in Europe and North America. The Guns of August (1962) details the military decisions and actions that occurred leading up to and during the first month of World War I. It is primarily what established her reputation. During the Cu
  2. Don't forget Sonny Rollins. Saw him back in '99, still blowing a furious horn and he's still on the road today. As far as Silver, Fresh Air's brief obituary reminded us that Steely Dan fans should be forever indebted to him for this bass line. http://youtu.be/S1CilMzT55M
  3. I didn't get to watch much yesterday. About 1/2 of the AUS/NED game. It seemed like a rugby match. Very physical. It's now official that Altidore won't play Sunday. No surprise, but I was kind of hoping for a miracle recovery.
  4. Didn't end well for you. A pretty physical game.
  5. Quite frankly, the first one is. Just look at Korea, Japan, Germany, etc. Not ideal, but feasible. From what I can gather, this ISIS group is nearly as well organized, led, and funded as Al Qaeda. Going after these terrorist groups seems about as effective asplaying whack-a-mole. Not sure what the short-term answer is, but I remain convinced that a major part of the long-term answer is energy independence. Saudis and other wealthy Arabs seem to pump money into whatever new group crops up. Dry up their major source of wealth and our need to support regimes that our diametrically oppos
  6. I bet one could prove that baseball's declining popularity is in direct correlation with America's shrinking attention span.
  7. Easiest way to make soccer more palatable to American tastes: add a blue line like hockey. Offsides is omly called when it is past the blue line. They could implement this in MLS, but it would make it too different from the international game. I get not liking soccer. For me, it's like baseball: long periods of not much, then stunning neauty and athleticism when it all comes together.
  8. Losing Altidore is going to hurt. Let's hope for a miracle!
  9. Surprised no one started this yet. What a game! Go USA!
  10. It's too bad Semisonic became a one hit wonder with a fairly crappy song. I like them a lot. Not nearly as much as their predecessor, Trip Shakespeare, but they're better than many realize or would give a chance. Dan Wilson is a great songwriter.
  11. Yeah, that looks pretty brilliant. I really want to hate Ethan Hawke, but Richard Linklater makes it so hard.
  12. And I was in DC briefly yesterday I had 54 8th graders in tow on our way to Williamsburg. Headed back to DC now. Sorry I missed it.
  13. Not sure if I've heard an acoustic version of that. If so, not with the string bending and 7th chord. That was nice.
  14. Without trying to sound completely negative, I can totally understand anyone being bored at these shows. I think this will translate much better to recording than live show.
  15. You better have a good reason for being up before 6:00 on a Saturday!
  16. He does say the guy deserves a trial.
  17. Ask Malala Yousazai if she thinks the Taliban are terrorists.
  18. Hixter, I absolutely agree with you IF the worst allegations are proven in a court (martial) of law. Not having read too much about this, it seems like many are turning themselves in to prosecutor, judge and jury with scant evidence. It seems that the right wing media machine wants to declare Bergdahl guilty so they can declare Obama guilty and proceed ASAP with impeachment hearings.
  19. Careful... The decisions of mods are not to be questioned here. You're treading into dangerous waters. Also, who's Jules?
  20. I think the mix of acoustic/electric guitar and the vocal styles -- particularly background -- sounds a lot like T. Rex.
  21. Specifically was referring to Workin', Relaxin', Steamin', and Cookin'
  22. She and Mo Tucker should form a band with the Nuge.
