  1. You're right, they are problematic, it's a quid pro quo. I think it's a sadder state of affairs is that fundraising and atrocious 30 second ads work, not that they are legal. Campaign finance reform is a band aid on the hemorrhaging wound of stupidity in this country.
  2. When you limit someone's ability to distribute their political POV, you're limiting their freedom. It might not be right, but it is damn sure constitutional. However, I think one could make a case that people should only be allowed to financially participate in elections for which they can vote (ie, their own district, state, etc.)
  3. So damn surreal. Go back to '88 to '89 and imagine this conversation.
  4. Aha. And I forgot about Velvet Revolver and his time with Jane's Addiction.
  5. That's just weird. Could you imagine Peter Criss filling in a few dare for KISS? I suppose Duff could really need the cash.
  6. I listened to Medeski Martin & Wood today (Combustication). Damn, I like them.
  7. I fly into DC (quite possibly BWI) the following day. :/
  8. So. A new RTT? Could get interesting in here. Or not.
  9. Sarah singing Lullaby of Birdland w/ Clifford Brown on trumpet. Swoon!
  10. I was hoping Jules would win this and give it to Atticus.
  11. Another huge favorite that turned me from casual to "serious" (not as serious as Calvino or louisb) is the Miles Quintet releases just before he went to Columbia (workin', relaxin' sweatin', steamin'). I listened to those hardcore in the late 90s early 00s.
  12. The Bad Plus's take on Stravinsky's Rite of Spring came out today. I want to hear that. Coltrane at the Half Note is great, haven't listened to that in a while.
  13. Holy crap! A coherent post that I agree with from IRDB in the political thread. Weird.
  14. I promise you Don Draper will not reply to this. I would say I tend to agree with you, but the leadership (i.e., Boehner) is less far right than the rank and file and that counts for something.
  15. Big show: U2 zoo tv, Ames, IA 9/92 Small shows: Grant Hart Jonathan Richman. Both at Vaudeville Mews, a hole in the wall in Des Moines.
  16. I think your obsession with a small but vocal minority of our nation's population (tea partiers and other extreme right-wingers) is also kind of weird. History is obviously against them with gay marriage, marijuana laws, decreasing church attendance, etc. Why get yourself so worked up about it? On the other hand, Gore wants to be known as the guy who fought against global warming and create a bunch of regulations for all of us to follow while his carbon footprint is probably 1000x larger than the average American's.
  17. I will grant that the right wing has been more guilty of this recently; but people of all political persuasions have always been more willing to accept information that fits with their existing worldview than those that contradict it. That's an indisputable fact.
  18. Just to reiterate what was said earlier. The google play store is much more free and loose than the apple app store. ALWAYS when downloading an app, check to see what permissions you're giving. Why would a "game" app need access to your calls?? It probably doesn't don't download it. I like my Galaxy, but I'm a bit paranoid after having heard about some of the security issues with droid.
  19. Oops. It's OK. I'm not that bright. That's a fair question.
  20. Nope, according to the young earth creationists all living things lived in perfect harmony until Eve at that fruit.
  21. Yep! Enjoy. He almost always hangs out after the show to meet fans, sign things, pose for pix. A very gracious man.
  22. Robert Christgau was nearly fawning over this on NPR today. http://www.npr.org/2014/03/06/286886174/album-review-english-oceans-by-drive-by-truckers
  23. Who'd you shoot and steal that sticker from?
